Played off of the first game (which still holds up today!) while expanding your choices of mercs, weaponry, tactics and strategy.
The reveal of Mike and your mercenary's reactions to it were great, Deidranna was a petty, cruel and outstanding villain.
I don't necessarily agree with the excision of Star Control 2, though I was contemplating replacing it with its predecessor - Starflight or Starflight II - but it's funny, I just bought a bunch of post-Jagged Alliance 2 stuff that came out like Wildfire like an hour ago. JA2 Gold is deffo one of my top 50.
Also: Hyperlight Drifter doesn't tell you much to begin with, does it?
Yeah. And those initial zones are easier, designed in such a way to teach you the mechanics. It's very deftly done, don't get me wrong.
But if I haven't played in three weeks, and I come into some laser maze in some random-ass god-knows-where dungeon, unsure which direction I'm even moving in it? I'd rather not restart the game to get reintroduced to the concepts, I think I'd prefer some tutorial menus, y'know?

I've earnestly bounced off of Star Control four times, and despite efforts it just didn't stick. My cousin raved about it constantly. That cousin also wouldn't tell us what button to use to parry in Prince of Persia for sword fights, so he had already was a selfmade monster.
Jagged Alliance is a franchise that has been perhaps done the most dirty in the last twenty for how promising it was to be. IIRC Wildfire adds a boatload of extra gear and ups the difficulty.
Personally JA1 is my favourite, while recognising that JA2 is the better game.

Still hope we get a Firaxis reboot some day.
You do know that Jagged Alliance 3 is coming out soon right?
Honestly there's stuff about DeSo that still feels interesting and novel even after playing all the others
It had a different approach to level and boss design, I kinda wish they'd go back and study it a bit because there's a lot of subtle but meaningful differences that could really spice those games up if they mixed them in with their current design style

I've been so disappointed by the JA2 retreads and garbage that's been put out since JA2 that I've kind of been checked out on things.
I'll do some looking into it, but does it look promising at all?
I'm pretty sure it was announced during one of the recent award shows or conventions. I don't think they showed much but it looked and sounded good to me. I expect it to be back to form.
People say that but I don't agree. I think SotFS is more engaging. I beat both versions. I actually played through the original multiple times, so I'm not denigrating that version at all, but I do think SotFS truly added to it in a positive way.
Scholar fixes some things, like your weapons taking durability damage multiple times when colliding with geometry or dead enemies. Graphically its been cleaned up compared to the initial launch.
Generally I'm in agreement that vanilla DS2 is the better version to play first. Enemy placement at times in Scholar is deliberately designed to fuck with people who have played through it once.

The only thing in Vanilla that's actively worse is Shrine of Amana.
HLD is one of my all-time favorites but I fully understand how Pooro's experience with it was not a great one, and that is on the devs
they made their choices when they designed it and they had to know there were going to be some people in that boat
Honestly, I respect the design - some of my favorite shit in all media is singular and weird and hard to interact with
If HLD had caught me on a hiatus or when I was down with a flu or otherwise had time to just marathon it? I might be knifing people for it right now. It just happened to catch me wrong, and sometimes that's how shit goes

Consolidation post - adding back in the erroneous, deeply wrong removal of Star Control 2 for the inclusion of JA2, a tactical combat game inferior to UFO / X-com which is already on the list.

There is enough space in the list to deal with both dicators and ethereals.

And then you’re still discovering new builds on run 800
(Hades is the only Switch game I’ve played in 13 months, save for a teeny start to Dread)

That concludes me for the night, I couldn't let that injustice stand.
I actually did not!

Apparently it was announced in September.
Appreciated!

Removing that, replace with Tribes:Ascend as even the worst Tribes is better than that.
Puyo Puyo might be better than that.
It's hard to say.

ADD: Curse of Monkey Island
Add: Zork
