This was a great film and I liked it a bunch. I appreciated that while it often focused around the importance of familial reconciliation, it also expanded that into a more general sense that you should be open to taking other people seriously, but comfortable telling people to stop being pricks.

The scene of Evelyn asking Gong Gong how he could have had such an easy time abandoning her hit real hard for me. My own parents talked about how one of the things that hit hardest for them after having kids was realizing their own parents had either never felt the same way about them as they did about their own children, or had worked hard to suppress that feeling. Too many movies about the importance of family focus on family being simply the people you forgive for everything, and this one was more about speaking candidly with people about who you are and what you're feeling and what everyone needs.

I lost my stepdad in April 2017. He was a professor and expert in sci-fi, fantasy, YA, and children's literature. Best man I ever knew.

He was also an atheist Jew, and his family is where I got my lifelong love of bagels. I got my lifelong love of genre movies, shows, and books from him directly (first thing I remember doing with him was seeing the original TRON; the last thing, geeking out about The Expanse).

Watching this movie, almost exactly five years later, I couldn't help but think that it was everything he loved about sci-fi/fantasy: funny, brilliant, heartfelt, ridiculous, inclusive, even internally consistent (for certain values of internal consistency)...

And then that fucking Everything Bagel. That would have tickled Mike to no end. I almost broke down in the theater.

God damn it, this is so good. Maybe too good. Fuck. I miss my stepdad.

And I kinda want a hot dog.

The real honest superpower of 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' for me is its sincerity. In a world where everything is either "just a joke" or trolling or a shit post, it says what it means and it means what it says. For all the completely bonkers concepts, visuals, acting beats, and jokes; it means every word.

I'm tired of cynicism and nihilism and trolling. I'm tired of existing in an insincere world. So I'm happy when someone or something is sincere and honest, and EEAAO made me very happy indeed.

Ke Huy Quan is just phenomenal in this, both in terms of acting (he had a body language coach that taught him to behave like different animals, so first Waymond was a squirrel, while Alpha Waymond was an Eagle, and Successful Lonely Waymond was a Fox) and just the sincerity and earnestness he poured into his performances. The gut-punch of the divorce speech, where he just knows something is wrong and doesn't know how to fix it ("I can tell when you look at me."), to the speech at the end where he's just pleading for everyone to be kind. And finally, that whole speech by Successful Waymond about rather doing laundry and taxes with her than being successful without her. His delivery is very heart-on-his-sleeve in the best way.

And, of course, he looked like a natural in the kung fu sections. He must have just thrown himself into everything about the role, and it shows.

There was definitely a point near the beginning-middle of the movie where I was worried that all of this would just turn out to be a goofy farce, and that none of these wacky gags would amount to anything overall, but then the final act of the movie is just utterly drowning in pathos and sincerity and I could not be more satisfied with how all the disparate silly gags come back in legitimately touching ways.

I saw it again at a drive-in movie theater over the weekend with my girlfriend, and something that she pointed out that I missed on my first viewing (let's face it, I missed a LOT of things on my first viewing because SO MUCH is going on) is that the speech that Alpha Waymond gives to Evelyn when he points out that she knows deep inside her bones that something isn't right was "Your clothes never wear as well the next day. Your hair never falls in quite the same way"... the lyrics to the one-hit wonder "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" by Nine Days.

    https://youtu.be/ZIANBamMgas

Which, of course, plays in the background later when Evelyn is the cleanup maid for the BDSM dude.

I read this part of this interview, and I'm like "Good lord, WHAT?". RE: Censorship -
DS: we knew that the gay story was going to be tough, but also gonna be really hard to cut out by design. That kind of excites me and it's like, it's just there, deal with it. But then the sex toys is like, all right, even if you blur them out, the movie's intact. But we had one territory cut out the rocks. And I was like, what? And we were both like, "But, but..."
DK: We were horrified. This movie is garbage without the rocks.
DS: Why on earth would you cut the rocks? They're the sweetest. And the answer, it turns out, is that it's a pretty religious country. And that the way those rocks explicitly talk about meaninglessness is like, essentially, they're talking about there being no God, you know, and their censorship board was like, "We can't put this out, not with the rocks." It's not even the taboo stuff that scared them. It kind of makes sense to me, because in a way that censorship board noticed what we were actually making a movie about, which is staring into infinity and feeling like there's no religious texts that I can turn to, to explain the Nothing that is there, that's going to answer these questions. That's just been on my mind lately to be like, oh fuck, I'm mad at them, but they're not wrong, either. I was not expecting there to be an explanation for it that involved nihilism. I was expecting that someone's just stupid, but of course there being no God is a lot scarier than these girls being gay.
DK: Let people kiss who they like to kiss. But yeah, I can understand why you'd be upset about meaninglessness.

Ugghhh brutal. 238 pulls for a Nearl. Used like 3 months worth of yellow cert tickets and originum. Along the way though, got 3 Flametails plus singles of Angelina, Archetto, Schwarz, and Rosmontis.

So definitely high 6* spark rate for me, but I really just wanted the Nearl....

Debating whether to cash in the yellow certs when May rolls around and try and squeeze out the last 50ish pulls for the pity Nearl dupe.

Oh, I guess this would be a good place to ask!

I have no six star snipers and I need some 6 Star ticket advice.

My core is Mudrock, Blaze, Suzu, Rosa, and a newly added Radiant Nearl and Dodge squirrel.

I am EXTREMELY early, like I’m on 1-11 in the story.

Can I survive without Gun angel Exusai and grab one of the solo monsters in Silver Ash or Thorns? Or a Bagpipe?

Most likely. I mean, I got away with using Kroos for I think all of the launch chapters. Also, if you have GreyThroat or ever get her, she is basically 5* discount Exusai.

Also both Silver Ash and Thorns are insanely good and can hit air targets, though their weird-shaped hit box ranges might cause you problems with fast moving drones if they can't get enough attacks in in time. Bagpipe is good but if you can only pick one I'd definitely recommend one of those two over her. She's more good situationally where those two are good on like almost every map.

How are your 4/5* snipers looking?

There are a lot of solid AA snipers that generally do what Exusai does except with less damage (Blue Poison, Greythroat, Platinum though she's a bit different, Jessica and even Kroos are serviceable 4/3*s). The biggest thing that Exu has over them is that her burst damage and wave clear is much higher, but if you just need someone to kill drones then there are a lot of alternatives.

Silverash is probably the best addition to that lineup in a vacuum, since you have a lot of good sustained damage and ground walls, but could probably use a bit more burst. Thorns and Bagpipe would also be good picks since they are literally always useful.

The only other thing to note is that Silverash is mostly useless until you E2 him, Bagpipe and Thorns are ok-ish at E1 but need E2 to become truly broken, whereas Exu does her job basically right away.

Exia is a great and reliable workhorse, but you don't "need" her. You need 2 to 3 reliable snipers for levels that call for them, and Kroos works fairly well through the first part of the game. Basic units like Meteor and Vermeil can also carry you for quite a ways. My personal favorites of the high tier ones are: Exia, Ash, Platinum, and BP.

As far as your ticket goes, I think Thorns is easily the strongest pick as he's good at wiping out everything except high defense units with high attack... who are attacking him directly. Very few units ARE good at dealing with that, so it's not even appropriate to call it a weakness. SilverAsh is basically a bomb to drop on a problem, but he's not even the best bomb in the game anymore (that would be Surtr).

Thorns is a cornerstone unit and is just plain amazing. He holds lanes, he deals some of if not the highest sustained damage in the game. You can have as many burst cd units as you want (to the point of saturation, honestly) but Thorns is like, Ol' Reliable. You can use him literally anywhere everywhere. He regens HP when not attacking, so most of the time he doesn't even need anyone healing him.

SAsh is a great nuke, but requires a lot more investment than most units. S3 is great, but the difference between baseline level 7 S3 and S3M3 is... huge. Baseline S3 takes 30 seconds to charge up. M3 takes 15 seconds to charge up, increases the attack total from 140% to 200%, increases the duration from 26 seconds to 30 seconds, and increases the number of units hit from 5 to 6. It is legit one of the best Masteries in the game, it just takes huge investment. I would honestly say his base S3 is... kind of unwieldy until you start pumping into the Masteries. That said, there's a lotta nukes in the game now (though SAsh still maintains having his gigantic range as an advantage). Less important now but still a good nuke unit.

Eyja's a fair pick if you just want a Stronk Caster to carry you. Her S2 is honestly really good (you won't need S3 til a lot later on, but her S3 is bonkers good), she functions as a ST Caster but also pseudo-AoE, with the splash from her S2 and the multitargeting from her S3. She's just plain solid.

Exu is fucking bonkers from the word go. S1 is already great, S2 is better, S3 is S2 on fuckin' steroids. She will annihilate low def units. She was my first 6* and I'd pair her with Meteor for the -Def debuff and she'd just rip.. Extremely strong pick and still one of the best Snipers in the game. THAT SAID, there's a lot of good 4*/5* Snipers that can perform adequately. Exu is incredible regardless, but somethin' to keep in mind too.

If you want the Operator so fucking broken that they literally had to balance the game around her, there's also Surtr. Surtr melts things. She touches down and suddenly everything vaporizes and evaporates. She is Death, Destroyer of Worlds. Boss killer fucking supreme. She can also function just a plain solid Arts Guard, but her nuke is what makes Surtr what she is. If any sort of boss or otherwise Large Lad is giving you the fits you bust out your Surtr Army Knife and go to town.

Bagpipe is a literal gamechanger for Vanguards. Once she hits E2 you'll see what I mean. Imagine the following: You drop down Myrtle best 6* in the game do not @ me, and her skill charges in like 2 seconds. And then you instantly gain a shitton of DP. And Bagpipe does that for her just by being in the squad, not even deployed. And once deployed? Well shit, she's insane. That saaaaid, Vigna is basically the best 4* On-Kill DP Vanguard, in many cases outclassing most 5* On-Kill Vanguards. Bagpipe is great for the real super hard shit (Annihilation, Contingency Contract, Events, etc) but honestly Vigna can fill the role you need for right now.

Depends on what you need really, but. My reccos would be between Thorns, Exu, Eyja, Surtr.

I would go with Thorns without second thought. I would use him much more than I use SilverAsh if I had him.

For snipers Kroos does a lot of damage. Build you 3* and 4* snipers and you’ll be well served.
