Everyone should buy Blood, it's easily my favourite of the boomer shooters.

I hope one day it gets ported to VR.

EDIT: I realize I have a Doom avatar...maybe they are tied...and wait there is also Marathon...

    Phantom Fury looks real good.

I agree. It's hard not to make the assumption that it's made by people extremely enthusiastic for a very esoteric concept--"The Duke Nukem 3D sequel that never was"--and tying that to a game that I think was practically a boomer shooter work of art, Ion Fury (not something everyone agrees with, though I think even people who dislike the game have to acknowledge it's a technical masterpiece, for whatever that's worth).

Oh, and a SiN tie-in, which is strange. But people (well, other people) really like SiN in that same audience. :|

Not sure if the quake/doom thread became the default boomer shooter thread, but if anyone has yet to try Cultic, it fucking slaps oh my god. I've seen a few reviews call it the "real Blood II" and that doesn't feel wrong. The game lacks a lot of the characterful voice acting that Blood had, but the environments and varied use of weapons are spot on as a spiritual evolution from Blood. The TNT comes back as a standard weapon and you can do something like 4 different things with it, including throw an unlit stack while you have another weapon equipped so you can easily blow it up by shooting it. The most common cultist enemies have a thrown hatchet ranged attack that interacts with physics, so you can shoot them out of the air or even catch them if you're fast enough.

    It's great. It's so great.

Civvie does Soldier of Fortune, which I had always assumed was a more tactical and down to earth take on a FPS, just with a crazy gore system, what with it's title being licensed from Soldier of Fortune magazine and the main character being based on a real life person.

It, uh.. totally is not that.

Wow, I love the distortion "gore" effect. I just scrubbed through briefly, looks like it could be fun / not milporny?

Undead ScottsmanUndead Scottsman Registered User regular
I haven't played it myself, but from Civvie's video it has the veneer of Milporn, but it plays like a oldschool shooter and
Goes way off the rails towards the end where you're running around with rocket launchers and lightning guns.

It is completely not what I expected.

Soldier of Fortune was awful and it’s only ‘draw’ was it’s ridiculous gore.

Like, I like blowing imps into gibs as much as the next guy but it’s a touch different when you shoot a normal person and he’s trying to hold his intestines in or choking from a bullet to the throat.

Apparently Nightdive wants to do an Unreal remaster as well, but despite CliffyB going to bat for the project, Tim Sweeney isn't interested.

Again demonstrating that he's a bit of an idiot.

Been going through a bunch of shooters as of late:

    - Cultic Episode 1
    - Serious Sam First Encounter HD (again)
    - Serious Sam Second Encounter HD (again)
    - Serious Sam 4
    - Serious Sam 4 expansion

    Currently playing:
    - Forgive me Father
    - Amid Evil expansion
    - Boltgun (although I've stalled on this for the last couple months, it gets really repetitive)
    - Quake 2 Enhanced new episode

    Probably will play through again:
    - Serious Sam 3

    On deck:
    - Quake 1 Enhanced new episode

Still a lot of goodness out there. Maybe I check out that Rise of the Triad ludicrous...I have and played through the 2013 remake, but playing through the original (enhanced) would be good too. Then we have the Dark Forces 1 remaster, which I think will be worth it. I beat it via DOSBox a few years ago, but playing through an "enhanced" version should be more fun.

Sometimes execs are fucking stupid even when there's no risk or cost involved and it's practically just free money. Nightdive tried to do the same thing with No One Lives Forever back in 2014 and some mahogany gorilla at WB flatly said they weren't interested in licensing out their owned share of the IP.

A Nightdive'd UT99 would be stellar, but I doubt Sweeney would be interested in that either (that guy seems to spend the vast majority of his time pontificating pseudo-intellectual ramblings on the Musk-o-tron while couched in his Fortnite billions). I'm sure Nightdive is probably already tinkering with a Quake 3 remaster though.

As for NOLF, two points: one, fuck Warner (the tale that was told very much pointed the finger at them), and two, at least NOLF Revival has us covered in a somewhat more unofficial way. (I may not have many physical PC games any more but my physical copies of those games are some of the treasures of my collection.)

The rights were a little more spread out than that, IIRC.

    Like, ostensibly

Fox Interactive, owned by Fox Corp, published the game, who later sold their games division to Vivindi, who later merged with Activision.

Fox Interactive's parent company got bought by Disney

Monolith made the game and is now owned by Warner Brothers.

So those are three MASSIVE companies, all of which may have some level of claim to the games.

And the issue isn't even that the people looking to make a remaster were told "no, we're not interested" by one of these parties, they were told "We're not 100% sure where the rights lie, and it's not worth it for us to take the time to track down those old contracts and figure out who owns what of this old ass game." They're especially disinclined because it might also confirm they DON'T have rights to the game, which would be considered a waste of time to put in that effort to figure that out, for zero financial benefit.

That said, when Microsoft finishes grabbing Activision, they might be willing to persue this a little more vigoriously, so maybe we'll see somthing come of it. I'm sure Spencer would love to add a cult classic to Gamepass.

EDIT: What we need is for someone to be willing to fall on thier sword and just put out an unauthorized NOLF remaster, get sued and wait for the contracts to come out in discovery. That's a totally sane and legit way of doing this!

The issue is that none of that matters, because WB said no. Because of how spread around the rights are, it only takes one 'no' from any entity to kill the project and WB was the first and only one at the time to flatly say no without further elaboration.

One would hope the CEO of Xbox could probably shake that tree a little harder than the CEO of Nightdive, (No offense to those guys, they are awesome!)

It's fully 3D, so it's more of a Quake-like. I think Civvie described it as Quake meets Blood with a dash of Redneck Rampage.

It's also extremely good. It's published by the same people who made Amid Evil.
