True enough but they seem to have stepped hard on the possibility of the dragon emperor or his children surviving and setting up their empire again somewhere… or maybe it’s just because the guy despises “gods” and chaos in particular so he’s been quietly building up somewhere out of the way rather than joining Sigmar’s pantheon?

By the time that happens hopefully they’ll have gotten around to reexamining the “Cathay” thing because that is the one army I’ve wanted in Warhammer for over thirty years now. Plus the TWWIII incarnation is pretty awesome. Giant terracotta warrior golems, dragon generals, hot air balloon cavalry and all.

And Kislev, kinda the big set piece of Kul's invasion. Maybe with a model of Engra Deathsword

Weirdly enough I don’t actually have any common orcs or goblins so that set is in fact quite tempting. Much rather have the book/cards though.

It's sort of weird that the Orc Boyz mob got mentioned as a classic plastic release but not the Goblins? Anyway, I like the new Black Orc boss even though it's resin, and I do want to pick up a Troll Hag at some point, just cause I think it's a neat model.

It's going to a a truly awful looking box of plastic spearelves, archers, silverhelms with one or two nice looking units, probably a chariot and a bolt thrower so there's other unit types in there besides infantry and cavalry.

More inerestingly will be how and if all the Island of Blood models are getting a sprue recut and release. There'S only pictures of the Seaguard, Reavers, Swordmasters and the mage of that set in the rulebook and Forces of Fantasy book. the Prince on griffon is nowhere to be seen.

The Old World is back but the toy soldiers for most of the armies aren't yet. And some those being re-released are 20-25 year old sculpts with a very modern price tag. What to do? Print an army with better models for a fraction of the cost! Even if you don't have access to a resin 3d printer there are lots of people on Etsy printing this stuff for a fee (still way cheaper than GW prices). And most of your money goes directly to the artists.

Here is a first stab at a list of where to find some cool sculpts. I am hoping others can contribute and we can update this over time.

Also note that for many of these artists if you sign up to a patreon or myminifactory "tribe" there is a steep discount.

I have printed quite a few of the High Elf minis. Also if you subscribe to his patreon for even one month you can download the entire backlog (including some not on mmf).

Looking at all the available high elves tells me that sculpting cloth is apparently very difficult.
Also some of the designers have a very weird combination of extremely fine surface details with super chunky base shapes like shields and cloaks

Style wise I still like Elfhead the best I think? especially for just regular spear elves. The right amount of detailing mostly

The GW size creep made the old bases pretty absurd yeah. How long till space marines need 50mm and people start digging out Inquisitor models?

Isn’t that the current boing grot kit? Didn’t it come out in AoS?

If so, I don’t think they were ever designed to rank up.

Ranking up just seems so much like nostalgia bait rather than something that adds anything to the gameplay or the aesthetics.

Firstly, a unit like squig riders is a perfect example of one that should have a "loose" formation like in Total Warhammer, which in this sort of game would just mean using more normal coherency rules.

Secondly, ranking makes sense in 6mm or 15mm games that have rules about wheeling and other fiddliness around how you move. And those games are interesting but that ends up becoming the entire game. If you're not doing an Impetus style ruleset where just moving into contact with an enemy is a game in itself, I don't see what ranking actually adds to the game.

Ranking and/or group bases on 28mm or 32mm models just makes the units way, way too big (see a Song of Ice and Fire or Conquest for this effect). To even move them around you have to have basically no terrain or ugly flat stuff like SOIAF uses. This works for 6mm games because the terrain is smaller and usually just flat blocks movement so you don't have to worry about perching your unit on top of or within it.

Squig hoppers are both Open Order and Skirmishers so they can be used in a "loose" formation

Edit: this now also brought back memories of painting the row and file numbers under the bases of fantasy models.

Who can forget the old clan rat kit (they looked more like monkeys) and their tails?

I remember the really old plastic kits where you got 10 single posed models.

Perfect if you wanted really chonky clan rats all staring diagonally off into the distance.

I feel like this thread is just personally targeting me at this point.

Those clan rats were the worst. Just the worst. They actually made me give up on Skaven completely.

After an initial burst of enthusiasm about ToW and recovering ancient models from their mouldering tombs (my parents basement) I haven't done anything at all with them beyond sort out roughly 2.5-3k of unpainted Elves to start fresh.

I blame everything being out of stock here in Aus so I can't get books to peruse. That and the usual villains of work, life admin and friends also being too busy to play.

Actually the whole rebase/print badse spacers is also a sticking point.

Once High Elves get their drop I will probably get a 2nd wind.

I finally got to playing Warcry a few weeks ago, and found the Dispossed rules at the start of the week.
Ended up makeing a warband consisting of five Ironbreakers, three Longbeards, a Runelord and a Gyrocopter.
It will most likely get stomped by any serious team, but I know I should have the models. And I really like Ironbreakers and Longbeards. :)

For some reason I can't justify I have been buying a lot of old Dwarf models over the last ten years, and going through them to get the models for my Warband I found out it is probably about 5000-8000pts just from looking at all the bags of stuff.
It's a little light on Core, and I don't have any of the special regiments in plastic, but I think I might just make a 1000 or 2000pts army to see if I like playing with them.

Everything is in raw metal, so rebasing them will be easy, since they don't have any yet.

Anyone know of a cheap way to get new bases? Preferably in Europe.

Depends what you mean by cheap. GW sells 100 bases for £3 but they’re flat tops not slotted. And also out of stock.
Green stuff world has 20mm to 25mm adapters/hollow bases for significantly more than that.

Seems like most manufacturers dropped square bases a long time ago for some reason…

There's also regiment bases with spacers to get the regiments to the appropriate width and depth without rebasing. not very flexible for different formations and skirmishers though
