I did not have to go to work but I had to go to the store and the rumored visit was happening so the pigeon that hangs out in pets/garden inside the store was scene by a member of district to which the store manager fumbled though excuses about. I saw other members of management being confronted with what is that and why?
So hopefully the ivory tower falls

Thing is they handle a bit of the work, so instead of me thinking a great deal, its just me thinking a lot.

Me: You know, the way we do this particular process is antiquated and kinda dumb and very insecure. We should make this particular change. Hey boss, why is it this way?

Boss: Well way back in the dinosaur times it was setup this way to make this other team happy. Former team member is on that team now, if you want to talk to them about it.

Me: Hey Former Team Member, I want to change this process in this way to make it not stupid. I was told that at the dawn of time it was setup the way it is now to make your team happy and not break your toys. Is that still a thing?

Former Team Member: Oh god no, we are now doing this thing in this other better way. You absolutely should update that process.

    Me: Done and done.

Me: Oh shit, I just gave myself a shit ton of work in a short amount of time suddenly because process is happening tomorrow.

Today I introduced Bat vs. Knife to my team at lunch, and after work two colleagues and I went out for drinks ("just one" said the same person who ended up going for seconds) and had a long conversation ranking our coworkers in terms of how comfortable we'd be changing clothes in front of them in a hotel room.

I've had some weird conversations today.

Well, job offer get! It's actually from the department that I interviewed with two full weeks after the other one (which as of literally yesterday was like, we're still working on picking a candidate sorry!)

Only bad news is, they want to start me at the school's minimum rate for the position's level. I expected this but was hoping for a bump - I'm not sure if there's any wiggle room so I need to email HR I think before giving a verbal acceptance.

I'll probably accept either way, it's the smart move in the long term, but in the short term it's gonna mean lean days for a while.

Filled out survey for subordinate at the new job which meets their long term goals.

Sad there wasn't a box where I could say, "I'm shooting myself in the foot and missing out on a rockstar. Double their offer pay!"

It took me a long time to learn that you can, in fact, ask for what you're worth. When I look back and try and add up what it cost me to be too meek to just fuckn say "I'll need at least £x000 to accept" I feel pretty sad and crushed.

Don't do that to poor Future Houk :(

I've never been able to bargain like that. Public service the rates are what they are and HR determines what rate you're in based on clear criteria, like degrees, and you start at the bottom of that rate if you're new to state otherwise it's a 5% increase from current salary up to cap for promotional positions.

I went back and double-checked and the job posting does say pay is commensurate with qualifications and experience just like a typical company position, so I feel like there should be some flexibility there in this case. Will definitely need to feel it out a bit more before committing

I've been in public for my whole career, and it depends on the agency and position. It's barely even bargaining, it's just "hey based on my experience/what I'm currently paid at other agency I think I'm more at step C/3 than A/1" whatever.

Place like yours, which I've been in, they'll say "lol take step A or fuck off."

Othe places will say "sure step C sounds great!" and then you wish you had asked for D.

If you're starting at a new place you won't know until you ask.

Edit: to clarify I'm not trying to discount your experience, just hoping that's not the case at Houk's place.

about to go get lunch, get a slack ping "hey we're putting [hardware] together and have some questions if you have time for a quick zoom right this minute"
me "yeah ok, send me an invite"
    wait

    nothing

me: "... but I was about to go get lunch"
them: "sorry sorry we just need five minutes"
meL "Yeah that's fine but you need to actually get on zoom if you want to zoom about it???"

Yeah for my federal position they offered me the bottom of the grade, I replied with my experience and said I think I'm more middle of the grade based on these qualifications, they countered with an offer at the top of the grade instead ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Department relocated to a new location. They decided to invite other departments on the floor to a "meet and greet" lunch social today.

As someone who is in the office every day I could have told them that the other departments in the office days are Tuesday and Wednesday, but I wasn't part of the planning. So instead we're basically having a meet and greet with ourselves.

I make it a habit to make weird faces if I'm the first to join so people joining are like "wtf" then refuse to acknowledge I'm doing anything weird if they ever call it out. I view eroding people's faith in their own sanity as a key everyday task.

that's one nice thing about this particular school, their pay grade minimums, averages, and maximums are published and updated every year so it's all freely accessible. and the swings are pretty wide. like at my pay grade there's a $24k difference between the min and max. so yeah, hoping there's some wiggle room there! the hiring manager was just pretty brusque with his offer (I get the impression this is just how he is) so I was a little cowed in the moment. but I'm gonna follow up with him tomorrow and see what's what.

Day 2 of me ignoring slack messages from a particular person.

    Yesterday's was the always useful

    "Hi andrew"

    today's is

"Hi andrew, I have a couple of questions"

Maybe on Monday I'll get the questions?

I've brought this up multiple times with the lead, I've got my status as a link to No hello and every time previously I've got messages like this I've asked them to put the question in the chat instead of asking something like "can we sync up?" or "quick call?" It saves the dance of them saying hello at 3am my time, me replying at 8am and them finally asking the question at 11am.

So as I'm running out of fucks and next week is my final week before a month away so I'm just going to see how far it goes before they realise and just ask the question. We're halfway across the world from each other, asynchronous communication is a necessity!
