I keep putting off getting Grendel, even briefly considered just spending the plat, but figure I can probably collect enough essence and run the missions in sub three hours, so I'm willing to accept I'll just have to put down the time for it soon. I really need that nourish helminth for my Mesa though.

I mean, the two games I ran last were Legend of the Five Rings and Pathfinder 2.

In the first the wizards are fine, and in the second, honestly, rather than jailing the wizard I'm desperately trying to break them out of the jail of uselessness the game has put them in baseline!

Yeah, I have the essence, but I just need to find the time to run it. And hopefully some other people to split the cost

Jailing wizards is easy. You just shackle their hands, cover their eyes and mouths, and keep them in a completely clean cell so they can’t scrounge any components together. Simple. Hold on

    *turns off camera*

what do you mean we exhausted our budget

This is how I came up with my Shadowrun character. He got sent to jail for leaking some schematics through a phishing scam at his corp job. He was mildly magical, so the courts threw him in a sensory dep hood for the two years he was in. He went batshit in response, constantly talking to himself and, ironically, deepening his connection to his spiritual side. He became a runner to fuck over the corp that threw him under the bus and became a magical weed dealer on the side. Only thing to calm him down a bit. Went by the name of Chatter.

So i figured out why Lies of P's combat feels so good to me compared to the mainline souls etc.

It's the tracking, or lack thereof on enemy attacks. They still have some tracking, but it's nothing like the momentum ignoring everyone's standing on greased spinning plates malarkey of Elden Ring and Dark Souls. Which in turn means using your dodge as a repositioning tool actually feels really good, because you can side-step attacks and punish enemies with back attacks or similar.

It's such a small thing, but it really really enhances the combat in a lot of dramatic ways.

I really appreciate Lies of P rewarding and encouraging you to use all of your defensive options: blocking/parry, dodge roll, positioning with spring and normal movement, you're expected to make use of all of it.

In Souls and ER they do that too, tracking and gap closing varies from attack to attack and sometimes a brutal attack is trivial if you just block it, or sprint away from it, or whatever, instead of using your preferred defense. Though if you don't experiment you often won't realize how many attacks you can just walk around in Elden Ring or later Souls games. Or jump in ER (saw in a RL1 video recently that you can jump the last attack of Rellana's standard combo for a jump attack punish, where she slashes horizontal with both swords. you can also sidestep a few of her attacks without sprinting or rolling).

Making spacing and positioning not matter because enemies just motion warp or have non-root-motion animations or whatever to get them 'on target' is a quick way to knock a point or three off your Soulslike's gameplay, for sure.

I find ER still feels a lot more artificial than Lies Of P in that regard.

A lot of it is to do with how animations are handled - P moves with his whole body, the Tarnished often has the legs doing something entirely different to the upper body (very noticeable with jumping).

Some of it also though is a product of how the equipment system is handled - you don't get (good) blocks (most of the time) unless you equip a shield, or a very specific subset of weapons. Forget parries unless you give up weapon art! So on, so forth. It creates a mindset where experimenting isn't worth it

To be clear, I agree that Lies of P is better about it than Elden Ring.

Just, I'd put all of the Fromsoft games at the same far end of the 'reward spacing and positioning' spectrum alongside Lies of P, taking Soulslikes as a whole.

A lot of them just don't give a single solitary fuck about you trying to back backward at the extreme range of an enemy attack to bait a miss and whiff punish or whatever. They're going to hit if you were in range when they decided to hit, and now it's just a question of whether you block or dodge.

I personally like how, I think, Eberron deals with imprisoning dangerous mages & other types of figures: petrification.

You have your in-house Medusa look at the wizard and then you plop them on a dolly cart before shoving them into a closet.

I think it’d be cool if you’re running Eberron and you go to this prison and you have a dwarf player hear what the petrified prisoners are thinking when they put their hand on them because dwarfs can read stone.

Wait say if someone had a currently incurable terminal disease or curse could you petrify them to delay things? Or like if you needed to store perishables you could just petrify them, then shrink them for the trip so the weight isn’t too heavy.

My god think of the commercial utility

That's actually something that happens in Baldur's Gate 3, funnily enough!

Welp. Someone in my household finally got it; and they were the person we were most afraid about getting it due to being immunocompromised. So far it's mostly been aches and a lot of drainage. Everyone else in the house has tested negative, but we'll see how the next couple of weeks treat the rest of us.

We made it four and a half years. Here's hoping none of us get any major long-term effects.

I laughed when the game asked if I was sure that I wanted to select Dehya. I mean, obviously they'd have a confirmation message, but it's still funny.

Booked it to the new artifact domain, and yeah. Definitely a fan of how Natlan looks so far. Can't really say how nice it will be to explore until I really get into it though, pretty much went in a straight line. Definitely gonna be using Kachina in overworld, in a very almost-coherent team of Navia/Dehya/Benny/Kachina.
