It's not action exactly but it is faster paced than the Wire. I think the best way I could phrase it is that it emphasizes drama more than the Wire does.
I like it more but that's likely because it wants to be liked more. Vic Mackey is meant to be an enthralling protagonist.
No one can do a sneer of contempt like Vic Mackey.
Mostly due to the fact that the people he sneers at tend to wind up with their brains blasted all over a wall at some later date. It's hard to top that.

So about that last scene in the clubhouse:
Was that a 'Shane's dead' 'yeah, let's do him' look between Ronnie and Vic, or do I really just hate Shane that much that I'm imagining things?

Vic is keeping Shane close a-la "keep your enemies closer" philosophy; when the time's right he'll have zero qualms about dumping Shane's corpse in an unmarked grave. The sneer of contempt said it all.
The really interesting thing about that scene was Ronnie's expression...or in this case, complete lack of expression. You can't read a damn thing from it, it was almost a perfect blank. Think I'd find that more then a little nerve racking, if I were Vic.

I have but one question, is this anywhere, anywhere near as great as The Wire?
Nothing is as good as the Wire, because the Wire transcends TV to become the kind of cultural artifact people will study a century from now. It's...literature, and it perfectly captures our era. People who study the early 21st century will know the Wire.
The Shield, on the other hand, is "just" a great television show.

I seriously think this week's episode was all about setting up
an ever-widening split between Ronnie and Vic, especially now that Vic has "forgiven" Shane. Ronnie had to deal with a whole bunch of "being a real cop" shit without Vic and Shane backing him up, since they were both too busy dealing with the messes they, not Ronnie, created.
I forget, does Ronnie know that Vic shot Terry and that Shane was in on it? Seeing how Ronnie seems even less likely than Vic to forgive Shane for being a cop-killer, if Ronnie doesn't already know, finding out could push him over the edge to turn on Vic.
I believe the response was "Why didn't you tell me sooner so I could protect you better?"
I'm starting to suspect that Shane's body might end up in Ronnie's trunk without Vic's knowledge.

I still think the body that's going to wind up in Ronnie's trunk has a 50/50 chance of being Shane or Vic. Or both.
In fact, I think that "Ronnie turns on Vic" might be the big shock of this season, since everyone and their mother expects Vic or Ronnie to kill Shane at this point.
Julian hasn't had a significant plot in like 3 or 4 seasons. He had his confrontation with the glory hole mutilator in season 5. That didn't really go anywhere.
He was trying to conceive with his wife (who hasn't been mentioned since) in season 3 or 4, but he used gay porn to get off at the fertility clinic. That didn't go anywhere either.

Yeah, I'm liking him more and more for a hostile takeover. As somebody else mentioned, dude was just blank during that last scene in the clubhouse a week ago. More and more the guy is becoming unreadable (well, more unreadable)...except when showing obvious contempt for Shane and Vic and the shit he's having to deal with because of their fuck-ups.
If, at any point, he sees an opportunity to get out from under their dead weight, he will. If it involves killing either or both of them, he will. Oddly, I think he'll largely become a "clean" (well, by Strike Team standards) cop after that...part of what I think pisses him off so much is having all their personal bullshit get in the way of police work, which he still seems to at least somewhat care about.
So, do they air earlier episodes anywhere? I missed last week's, but I don't want to skip this week's, too. Can I buy or otherwise watch it anywhere?
To my knowledge there are no sanctioned online sources to watch it. Not free, not for money. You're pretty much stuck trying to find somebody who still has it sitting on their DVR, or exploring the internet's seedy underbelly.
I got a bad feeling that Dutch is gonna end up dead. Which is too bad because he's such a good character.

Honestly, as much as I love watching him bust some asshole's skull, I've not cared for Vic in quite some time. Maybe it's because his routine has involved a lot less skull-busting and a lot more ass-covering for the last few seasons.

Goddammit, my cable went all funky during the last 3 minutes of last night's episode.
What did I miss?
Vic showed up at Olivia's place, and found a file on him there. She came home, he drew a gun on her and told her he knew she was being blackmailed. She explained she had stolen evidence that would have gotten her brother thrown in jail. She hadn't exposed Vic yet, and asked for his help.
Next week looks crazy. It showed Shane being sent somewhere alone, and Vic says, "We swore to get Lem's killer. It's time we made good on that oath." Then a ton of shooting.
