Tuesdays are the worst for me

we have an extra show to tape along with taping 5 extra segments that air in other newscasts

and then we do an extra half hour on the end of our regular noon news

all with this home and garden guy who pretty much answers the same 5 questions over and over and he always has these guests on that are all "gull darnd if it aint the neatest thang the be on the tee vee"

    Guys I need help

I need to reformat my entire computer, but I can't get into windows since it won't boot up and all I can access are my BIOS

Is there any way to manually retrieve my essential data from my C: drive and then wipe it clean and reinstall xp or am I buggered

(also how do I know if I'm using NTFS or FAT32 i can't figure out where it would say that in the bios)

    You're using NTFS.

Also you just just boot from the disc to reinstall windows and delete your partitions and such, but if you can't log onto windows (have you tried booting into safe mode?) then I can't think of any way to retrieve any files.

Yep, I've tried every variation of safemode and even disabled the first thing my safemode loading was getting hungup on, to no avail.

That is a bummer! I guess I'll just have to delete my partitions and start anew after 5 years of accruing data on this baby :(

Would it be possible to manually pull my HD's out, plug 'em into something, and retrieve the data maybe?

Well if you have more than one HD, only the one that contains your operating system would be effected. You could just totally ignore the other one and all of your data would still be intact once you reinstall windows.

Depends on what you mean by "retrieve"

If you have a second hard drive or a USB drive or something, my first thought would be to tell you to go to another computer and burn a live linux CD, like Ubuntu or something (yes it's linux I know, but you never have to touch a terminal for this) and boot from that

Then you can do whatever copying you need to do, then find your windows CD and boot from that and get to formattin and reinstallin

If you DON'T have a second hard drive or a USB drive or something... err, get one I guess? I can't think of a good solution without one now that you've lost access to Windows, frankly

Only very old installations will still be using FAT32 (unless you set it to do that yourself when you installed Windows, and if you did, you knew why); most likely you're on NTFS

Yeah, I have a C: Drive and an F: drive, the windows install is on C:

So all I have to do is delete the C: partition in the BIOS and reinstall from my XP reinstall disk? (thank you javen you are an H&A all by yourself)

Also if your system got flummoxed because of a virus/worm then you REALLLLLLY don't want to start spreading that data around, just wipe it out (nuke from orbit etc etc) and start anew

Yes losing all that (porn|music|etc) really sucks, but it's better than keeping a virus laying around

Just to be safe I'd actually physically remove your F Drive until you've reinstalled windows. The drive is already formatted to windows so it shouldn't have any problems reading it, but again, just to be safe.

Can you give me a quick rundown of how to do this with Ubuntu? I'm going to download and burn Ubuntu right now and see if there's any way I can use it to selectively preserve my data.

If Ubuntu doesn't freak the fuck out at your hardware (it PROBABLY won't), then it'll come right up with a windows-like GUI and should identify all your drives for you, just start draggin and droppin

If Ubuntu DOES freak the fuck out, then yeah do what Air said, but I don't know if DOS can even read FAT32 let alone NTFS

does ubuntu write to ntfs cos i think i may have had a problem with that that brief time i tried ubuntu
if that happens you gotta reformat somethin to fat32
but reading is okay and i might be confused about the whole thing

anyway if shit stays fucked just leave the ubuntu cd in the drive and enjoy your new operating system

did you burn the iso as a file to the disc or do a burn image with your burning software?

UMMMMMM YOUR BIOS IS PROBABLY BOOTING OUT OF ORDER

IN YOUR BIOS, LOOK FOR SOMETHING LIKE BOOT DEVICE ORDER OR BOOT DEVICE PRIORITY OR SOMESHIT AND MAKE SURE YOUR CDROM DRIVE IS HIGHER PRIORITY THAN YOUR HARD DRIVES

KINDA HARD TO GIVE DIRECTIONS ON THIS WITHOUT SEEING YOUR BIOS SCREEN SINCE EVERY ONE IS INEVITABLY SORT OF DIFFERENT FROM EVERYONE ELSE'S FOR SOME GODDAMN REASON
