I am not entirely sure. There is a lot of shooting bugs. Some shooting mans. Some shooting Borg, and some shooting tornadoes.

...and when you are done with that; take a folding
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.

I'm playing it pretty much as a coop DIY horde mode shooter right now. Lots of prospecting and thumping, and I really enjoy that sort of gameplay. Moving around and exploring and then shooting waves of monsters is my kind of thing I guess. When that gets boring I get on my bike and chase Ares Missions and downed thumpers. I've run each of the instances once now, and they all were pretty cool as far as that sort of thing goes. I never had any issues playing them like some other people had, and I got a really cool gun off of BWA. I also spend a lot of time just dicking around. Jumping off of cliffs, seeing how far I can glide into the Melding (not far), and so on. I'm making a lot of my own fun I guess, and I'm pretty happy to play an MMO that lets me do that.

I am excited for more story based stuff, better instances and a wider variety of group activities. Right now for endgame content there is the Open PvP area, a Warfront and three boss raids. So it's not devoid but there is this stretch between your mid-twenties on where guided content drops off.

And this is completely anecdotal but it seems to me that Ares Missions and world events are tied to how many people are active in the area. Higher level areas are pretty skinny on activity and I notice they don't spawn a lot of missions either. But then I throw down a thumper and some people start to ball up and the activity picks up a bit and then I notice that stuff starts to happen in the area. Just a theory but I think it could hold water. Hopefully they bump them up a bit so that people leveling mid-level frames have something to do besides run Job Board and Thump in Sertao.

Events are actually supposed to be biased to spawn where people are, both in amounts and timing. Bit buggy right now sadly so not enough is spawning but when it works it is pretty great.

Feels like a prettier version of defiance with Diablo style sockets in everything. About the only mmo unique think now is jumpjets.

It's a fun shooter but pacing has slowed down in a dramatic fashion.

Edit- from doing a lot of hours (40ish) in shanty area it looks like event and ares spawn rates are now 5-10 minutes. Roughly every 1-2 thumps a couple things might come back on map. Almost all of them in last couple days there was no one else touching them or in the area.

From what I'm getting on firefall forum current spawn rates are by design. There was a spawn rate bug couple weeks ago but R5 post stated that was resolved.

So going back a few pages, I don't see anything about a PA group, but I know one exists. Can't somebody with a post on the front page add that info in?

The Army's name is Pax Arcadia, I believe. You can search for it at an Army terminal in the game. It took me a little bit to find it in the first "town" but there is one there near to what looks like barracks.

Any good beginner tips? My Dreadnaught is up to level 8 or so now, and I'm still mostly doing missions and random thumping around Copa.

I really wish I could travel around faster; I did the math yesterday and it's going to take quite a bit of grinding to get enough red beans for a bike or glider. I'm just trying to get to level 10 already so I can start using perks because I think there are movement speed perks.

Considering dropping a little cash on beans to speed up the process but I'm not sure. Trying to hold out and resist and play some more before I do anything drastic.

IGN is hatedinamerica of course, if anybody wants to add me or anything.

So I found a new shiny Burst Rifle of my level and despite figuring it's probably not that great I decided to give it a try - and it was truly horribly bad. I'd have easier time meleeing everything dead than trying to kill them with its short inaccurate bursts of tiny damage. Back to my grenade launcher I go.

What do people generally use as secondary weapons? I'm playing a dreadnought so secondary is my AE option but I guess with classes that have better AE skills or more tricky primary weapons they might use a SMG or an assault rifle.

  • Options

I used a grenade launcher on my raptor for a fair bit, for AE'ing down Arahna swarms. I'm using a necro rifle atm, but still have the GL just in case. Burst rifle is really good dps, but you can damn near snipe with most anything unless you're at extreme range.

    PolaritiePolaritie Sleepy Registered User regular
SMG is probably the most well rounded secondary. Burst Rifle is... iffy, but not as bad as shotty. AR is solid, but needs ads to get accuracy while moving. And of course grenades are always safe for thumping.

That said, Dreadnought has decent AoE between explosive rounds and repulser blast.

Biggest thing is hop as much as possible. Ranged enemies will aim along your projected course. Long burns will get you pasted by shooty enemies and side strafing alone will get you chewed up a fair amount as well. It's one reason I recommend jump perk so much, need little energy with it.

Really recommend thumping or campaign mission if you don't have a bike. You will get expensive faster with probably more loot to boot.

Highly recommend smg, more forgiving then AR for spray and pray accuracy and can be made insanely accurate with sustained fire. From 22-31 my dread used almost nothing but turret mode smg with mg+explosive rds for groups.

Entropic SMGs with a high quality Longmag mod can get insane ammo capacity too. I have one with a 91 round magazine that is pretty funny. It just goes and goes and goes. I never really use it though, the Plasma Cannon easily meets my needs.

One thing that I'm seeing that's great about thumping is you get back 1Cy for every 2 ore you refine. A few Thumper loads on a decent vein should net you over 1K Cy easy. Not to mention the loot and so on. It's probably not the optimal way to level but I'm having a lot of fun.

  • Options
    DreadBertDreadBert Registered User regular
Well, thumping beats the heck out of mission boards. Seriously, multi part missions were a horrible idea with them randomly spawning all over the board... They really should have a reward multiplier for distance.

I don't mind the travel in the game, so that bit of Job Board missions doesn't really bother me. It'd the defend and escort stuff that gets me but those are fine when you have another person or two along. I like the go here, destroy this, grab that and arcport it and kill those guys types of objectives just fine. And getting around in Firefall is a lot of fun with the bikes, gliders and jump jets.

I can see some things changing now that they are making some money off of the game, at least. They seem generally open about fixing or changing some things from talking with Phobos in Copa.

That said I do just find it... fun? Raptor was horrible but I just didn't like the class. I'm always having a ton of fun when I'm just playing my Dragonfly, swooping around bombing dudes with poison balls and shockwaving them backwards into my exploding heal pillars. I don't mind job boards after the Saga hump because they pretty much just turn into mass murder sprees with very few 'Defend this' or 'Help this'. No no, 'Murder everything.' becomes far more common which is right up my alley. Also voucher vendors tend to sell such shiny things.

I love the DT tileset. I can just wander around there and blow stuff up no problem. Though fuuuuck Hell Slingers. So hard.

Pretty sure these old style ARES missions just spawn very slowly and don't go away until clear. Hopped online earlier with 4 ARES missions in shanty loop and picked up two crashed bikes and a crashed thumper on way to first one. Maybe about 10 resource nodes as well. Just like old times there for a bout 20 minutes.

2 Hours of playtime later and only two ARES respawned and maybe 4 or so crashed bikes/thumpers popped up on map. Did one 3k-3.5k travel board mission and decided to take a break. They really should do something about these mission spawn rates because if your not thumping or running instances the game gets pretty boring with travel taking a good 2/3 of playtime.

Edit- abnormally bad grammar and spelling

It takes 3 minutes and 45 seconds to bike from thump dump to sunken harbor.

7 minutes and 40 odd to make a circuit around Sertao.

I haven't tried DT on a timer yet but gliding is more fun there.

Travel really isn't that bad. Of the 18 missions I did yesterday only two had a target over 1k away. So it seems to be improving.

Think bike travel is almost a function of number running board missions in serato. Seems like about the time I get to cruising along a pile of mission stuff spawns on the road in front of me. NE does not do board missions in the middle of the road at least.

Curious how the new folks deal with board missions without a bike though.

Edit, what are you seeing in total travel for missions? Serato had so many parts that even 400m steps were totaling several k.

Have not done DT missions since last couple melding pushes. Good to hear it's being more forgiving now.

So, a few folks have mentioned they wanted to be able to thump but don't have the levels or credits to acquire one. If your wanting a Personal I to learn with, drop a message in the thread or give a shout in army if i'm on and I'll crank some out and mail ya one. Have a pretty huge stockpile of the mats so don't hesitate.

Also if you want to try thumping and you're not a frame with naturally good aoe.

    Get a grenade launcher.

You start with Personal and Squad of the default ones, and can use those all the way up to level 20ish since you wont really find much tungsten before then. If you lose them, you can even buy more from Thumpdump for crystite to replace them. By the time you're 20 you should have no problems crafting your own thumpers of whatever type barring the 3rd tier ones.

Put some time in on this Tuesday and Wednesday, I'm finding the shooting and looting itself a lot of fun but man do I need someone to explain the social aspects to me as if I were a five year old. Not sure if that's my unfamiliarity with mmos or if I'm just being dense but it was like they explained the game mechanics in the opening and then just completely ignored how to interact with other players.

CorrIganX was kind enough to shoot me a friend and army invite when he saw me hop on the other day. There was a prompt for how to accept the friend one but after that I was clueless. Poking around for a few minutes in menus I was able to figure out how to at least shoot one of those whisper things back and have him walk me through accepting the army invite. But now I'm lost again. So, questions.

Is there any way to tell by looking at that army screen who's playing at a similar level and would be appropriate to try and group up with? And how do you do that anyways? I assume with all those people roaming around there's a way to tell the game that you want to do like a job board mission with specific people and share xp or whatever.

Also, the chat stuff. Like I said I found the option to switch it to whisper but then didn't see a way to get it back to just the zone stuff. And at one point people started talking just within the army. Again no clue. How do you switch between the different varieties of chat?

I'm sure I'll come up with all sorts of other dumb questions as I get further along but for now I think those would be enough to actually get me playing with others.

    ____
    Does the hammer do damage?
Hammer still does ~400 aoe damage but I don't think it cares about power factor.

    ____

As for chat stuff, lower left will have General, Log, Team/Squad, and Army chat filters.

    Chat Shorthand
    /s "squad chat"
    /p "platoon"
    /w playername "whisper player"
    /r "respond to last whisper"
    /z "zone chat"
    /y "yell"
/l "local chat, pretty short range"

I've got the default Thumpers you get after the intro stuff but not the full fledged Personal 1 Thumper I believe. Is that the one you can get from breaking down level 20+ stuff?

I remember researching either the P1 or S1 plans for the thumper, just can't make them yet.

I lost my free personal thumper due to idiocy on my part and had to re-craft one. Learned it was cheaper to remanufacture it than to buy it. At least it seemed to be to my noobish eyes.

There is a social menu kind of hidden in the calldown menu. Press C and then right click and you'll back out of the calldown menu into the main menu (I think the tilde key is the default key for the main menu as well). Scroll down a bit and you'll see the social menu. It has a lot of useful functions for invites and stuff. Most importantly the function at the bottom will load you into your squad leader's instance so you can play together.
