Tyrion riding his horse into battle

I just dont think it would work on television, participating in the battle fine, but maybe not so much first-hand badassery in combat given that his whole shtick is that he survives by his intellect not his might.

We will find out sooner rather than later

    Book 1 spoilers
In the book, Tyrion participates in the battle at the green fork as part of Tywin's army. So we will see this season how willing they will be to show Tyrion mixing it up in battle.

There's been a few shots of him in the trailers hiding behind that shield.

    I'm pretty sure that's when
Catelyn's prisoner party, which is escorting Tyrion to the Eyrie, is ambushed by mountain men. That's also where that shot of Bronn in battle comes from.

At the green fork, Tyrion has an unsullied helmet on, and that's what saves his life.

    I've given that some thought.
My guess is that since making him up without most of a nose might be too elaborate to be practical and look good, they might downgrade his injury to a big gash going across his face.

Big difference between reading about an injury in a book and being all "dude got his face mutilated" vs seeing a dude with a mutilated face on camera for multiple episodes.

hmm that's a thought. I pictured Mance as being a bit older though... although I haven't seen West in anything more recent than 300, he might have aged a bit.

CoK is only getting 10 episodes, and Martin himself is writing the one with the
    Battle of Blackwater

Ehhhh that's a tight squeeze. If it gets renewed for a third season, they're going to have to either split SoS in two (I'm fine with that, it gives Martin more time to get ahead) or give it more episodes. Or else it will be really really rushed.

Davos or Oberyn would be my top picks for him, but people have suggested James Purefoy for Oberyn which would be even better, so Davos.

So, on for another season. Will it be next year? Will we see one a year, I mean, until they've caught up to the books?

I hope they go the anime route and write a bunch of filler arcs to give the author time to get ahead!

Actually, of course I don't hope that. It would be cool if the show chugging along made Martin at least prioritize finishing book 5. Before he dies.

Actually, considering how huge Storm (and, soon, Dance) are, it's not inconceivable that they would split these into two seasons each (well, 3 seasons putting Feast and Dance together, assuming they don't wanna do the jump back in time). If you add it up, that means that the first 5 books will have finished airing in 7 years. That should be more than enough time to at least put The Winds of Winter out, so the question becomes can GRRM write two books in 7 years. If he can do that, then there's no gap, no catching up, the series can go one season a year and have all the books ready by the time they get there.
The Red Wedding is too big a shock not to turn it into a season finale, which is part of why I'm almost certain Storm will be split into two seasons.

Enjoyed this first episode. It wasn't amazing, things felt rushed, but that's not surprising given the amount of characters they have to introduce and plots they have to set up. Really liked all the casting, especially the Stark kids. Jaime's accent was a bit odd but I can deal. Title sequence was awesome. Can't wait for the next episode, and hopefully all the future series, assuming HBO doesn't pull a Deadwood on us.
