I am watching the awakening DX run...why aren't they using the map skip?
Wasn't it a 100% run
The map skip is opening the map during a screen transition. It's an obscenely infamous glitch from awakening that was mentioned in Nintendo power. When you do it, it moves you to the transitions the screen without moving Link's position. It allows you to move obscenely quickly, even if you aren't trying to do things like jump off walls into boss rooms.

So I've never cared about speedruns at all in the past and just assumed they were for crazy people exploiting glitches. I watched a few of these this year and now I'm hooked. Really entertaining stuff.
Also I fell asleep to an episode of Archer last night but my addled brain started interpreting it as me listening to a speedrun. Archer was doing the run and his mom was commenting on it. It was a weird dream.
I think 3 kinda takes it to a new level and also the gimmicks are bad and not good
I agree the level design is worse, but I would say it's a far cry from a bad game. It just doesn't live up to DKC2, which had very sharp design on top of a superior aesthetic.
Alright FFIV run added to OP. That means all the runs in the OP should have proper links to VODs, just in case you need to catch up on runs over the upcoming weekend. Also, Yetee shirts are starting to ship, so keep an eye on your mailbox, both digital and physical. Glad they shipped a lot quicker than AGDQ's did. Feel free to continue with recommendations, but I'm only adding real standouts to the OP in order to keep the list relatively short. Still, it's good to mention solid runs here so lesser-known stuff can get some love.
And that's it for this year! Two marathons in the bag, raising over 2.5 million dollars in 2016. I'm thinking of making a new thread for 2017 to keep things fresh, but in the meantime feel free to use this thread for all things speedrunning. There's the ESA marathon later this month, which is another week-long event that should be an excellent watch since it's going to have a lot of European runners that aren't able to make the trip to GDQ events.
Awesome Games Done Quick 2017 starts January 8th. See you there!
If you're hankering for more GDQ, they're now doing shows called "GDQ Hotfix" that showcases speedrunning events such as races. All subscription money goes towards the Prevent Cancer Foundation!
I dunno what the schedule is for this, but they got an event planned for tomorrow night, and right now a SMW race is running.
I know this time he submitted some kind of custom YI romhack that was in process of being tuned for interesting speedrunning but I always felt like that was kind of a weird thing to submit - like outside of the art assets and physics being the same there's no sense of "oh you can do that there?"/familiarity because practically no one would have played it before
Hmm so it's a 100% Super Metroid race this time? I imagine they're doing so to make sure more than one player finishes this time. (The last SGDQ race was so intense and fun though, I'm not complaining about it!)
Looks like the mystery race may be a variation of what big jon does on his channel on occasion - where he randomly selects 26 games starting a-z and plays for like 10min each
I wonder if he's actually participating or just playing gameshow host

Also Prime 2: Echoes 6% run? This I gotta see.
I've seen a low% Echoes run before. It's pretty cool.
the low % echoes run is great, lots of cool glitches
have they ever run metroid 2? I feel like they have at least once. I wonder if they'd consider running AM2R this summer or if nintendo would be mad at them for broadcasting it.

I would imagine running AM2R would be like poking a hornet's nest

Gimmicks upon gimmicks upon gimmicks
I watched just enough of the DKTF run to remind myself I never beat that game and to just go back and play it again.
I think 3 kinda takes it to a new level and also the gimmicks are bad and not good
I'm on the last boss
Have been since it came out
I CANNOT beat him

multiple rpgs in a row seems like a bad call
maybe if you mix it up with snap or something but I dunno
Also they showed Donkey Kong 5 at PAX this year, and let me just say that the Awful Games block is gonna be good.

Yeah, sure, maybe they could get away with it
But it ain't worth the risk
