Destroying the hard drive is something that is very difficult to do accidentally. So either it was your computer's time, or your roommate is a complete retard.

Or he dropped your laptop. Hard drives are highly susceptible to impact failure, unlike most of the rest of the parts in a computer.

I can't beat him mercilessly as me beating a man in his 40s would just look really weird
I think there might have been an overheating problem since he had it on the carpet for whatever reason
unlikely that he dropped it

the laptop is 3 years old

edit: could he have just zapped the memory, maybe? if he had fried the mobo, it wouldn't start at all, right?
