Jenga is kind of a lame game though.

Could you perhaps change the system to fit with a game of Operation?

    jenga is great and super-tense

it is also unique in that every success translates to an increased future chance of colossal failure

I'm not sure that's how life works though.

Why should my successfully pulling off a difficult maneuver in one situation lead me to be less likely to be skilled enough to do something else later?

RPGs don't simulate life and anyone who thinks they should can suck my dick deeply

    RPGs simulate fiction

in the case of Dread and it's Jenga tower mechanics, it simulates horror fiction where people are slowly picked off over the course of the story with rising and falling levels of threat and intensity

    so

it works great for the genre the game was designed to evoke

also jenga is pretty mucha neutral game with nothing to it, no vague concepts or imageries or anything

it's just a mechanic device, no different than using dice or counters

    just waaaaaaay more dramatic

well, no, that's just not true. It introduces a huge meta-game skill component to the system that is not present in a purely random die roll.

except all those dice-based games also include mathematical mastery issues where the players with the most comprehensive knowledge of the systems, the mathematical probabilities, and the effectiveness of certain game mechanical elements over others do have a huge advantage over people who don't

witness any game of D&D where there's a mix of hardcore power-gamers and people who are just like "eh i play whatever i feel like"

there's meta-game components to that, too, and in fact they're far more pervasive than "hey but what if one player is good at Jenga?"

I dont know if I could take the jenga seriously though

the people on the box look like they're having so much fun!

the silliness of jenga TV commercials stop affecting the tenseness of the game once you are already in a tense situation and your pull determines whether your character lives or dies

    look, let's face the facts

do you actually like the fact that RPG character sheets look like god damn tax forms

Oh wait you're actually serious at sales, okay.

Let's say that that's not my main source of interest in rpgs, no. Let's say I'm more concerned about imagining one iconic freeze frame for a character and embellishing from there through gameplay. Is Jenga the delivery for that?

    absofuckinglutely

okay so, in Dread when you are making an action with potentially catastrophic consequences for yourself (or possibly the story in general), the GM challenges you to "pull"

so you pull a block from the tower, and you put it on top, ala a normal game of Jenga

if you pull and place without toppling the tower, you succeed
if you refuse to pull, or if you start pulling but then stop, you fail but in a non-catastrophic fashion
if you pull and the tower topples, you die (or are otherwise removed from play, or in some instances it makes things worse for everyone)

notice how those just describe outcomes and not events?

that's where the narrative between you and the GM comes in. a catastrophic failure of a tower collapse could be hundreds of things depending on what you are doing, etc. etc.

it doesn't tell you "It does 14 points of damage and you are now Stunned"

    it's

    SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAPPENS

    and now you're dead

    what happened?

    how did you die?

this is where the description and narrative come in

    Interesting.

I have a pile of rpgs purchased recently, but need to knuckle down and run one.

I really want to run Usagi Yojimbo, which is all dice and modifiers, but it would never work in pbp.

Faith is the assumption of truth when evidence is absent.

This absence of evidence is evidence of absence of truth.

So faith in itself is evidence of falseness.

Therefore, faith is not a road to truth, but instead a road to falseness.

    You uh

    uhhhh

    oh.

Yeah not sure. I think as soon as you go online, you're almost better just assuming and going the opposite direction: all players have access to automated dice rolling and potentially hours/days between turns. Maybe something fussier that requires only periodic influence and you're likely better suited for pbp, anyway.
