I think that Saint's Row was a bigger achievement than Skyrim in some ways
like they said on one of the podcasts, this is the first real GotY contender THQ and Volition have ever put out. This brings both of them into a much bigger profile than they were before.
Skyrim is fantastic but pretty much everyone knew it would be fantastic.
Everyone thought it would be fantastic in the way that Morrowind/Oblivion/FO3/New Vegas were fantastic, in a kind of broken and well-it's-amazing-but way. Whereas the most common sentiment is holy shit it is actually fantastic.
edit: my silly pedantic argument for TOTP =
I know that were it not for GiantBomb SR3 would never be on my list of games to buy and play, but instead it is just after Dead Space 2.
Ryan's primary argument against SR3, having never played Skyrim, was that he played all there was to play in SR3 and ran out and was resentful that there wasn't more. So Skyrim got the nod due to sheer breadth of content.
I just remembered that bit, and that's why I felt he was doing it to be controversial.
Brad also hates Batman because he didn't know how to dive, then pull up to gain altitude, giving you a clear view at all the possible grapple points. Despite that being the first thing they teach you to do as soon as you put the Batsuit on in the flippin' game. Someone linked a video of proper gliding/grappling to him on Twitter yesterday and it was a revelation to him.
That's completely a sidepoint, but the GOTY stuff was recorded before he figured out how to play the game.
In any case, it would be quite funny if Ryan came back from the holidays having played a ton of Skyrim and ends up hating it. This whole thing was so contentious because Ryan was the tiebreaker and he never played Skyrim at all. Instead of abstaining and letting the other four go at each other (at one point, Jeff and Vinny have Brad on the ropes, done, finished), he chimes in with no useful contributions except for negative things about SR3.

My GOTY is Dark Souls so I don't think I really have anything to contribute to the conversation.
I am absolutely shocked they didn't go with Saints Row though, considering all they've talked about it. I haven't listened to the podcast yet.

Jeff and Ryan are insidious with how they argue their points... or shit on great games to make other people think better of other games. Its almost lawyerly to listen to, its kinda fascinating.
Abstained from Giant Bomb all day to listen to the podcast, I see why they placed Skyrim at the top, but part of me wanted them to put Saints Row at the the top just because it's such a Giant Bomb game.
Also just for shits and giggles my top five.
5. Ghost Trick
4. LA Noire
3. Saints Row: The Third
2. Batman: Arkham City
1. Portal 2
I'm about to play Skyrim though so who knows.
Edit: Actually forget Deus Ex, Ghost Trick, is pretty great.

Regardless, he should have played the game for no other reason than it was a clear GOTY contender and he was going to be producing content to determine GOTY.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
It was so weird to me that Ryan was saying he wanted more Saints Row the Third and because he wanted more that that was a mark against the game. Like are we at that point where 20-30 hours isn't enough anymore? Is it because it was up against Skyrim?
How is a game being so good that you want more of it a negative aspect?
The top 2 was a pretty big struggle inside my own head because I don't think SR3 is an improvement over 2, and if anything it's weaker. That said I also agreed with Jeff that it was still just more fun than Skryim. I'm enjoying Skyrim, but like Jeff I feel like so much of it is merely "good".
I kinda wanted Sr3 to win because it would have been interesting, but I don't really know if it honestly deserves it.
I'm still irritated Deus Ex was eliminated from the top 10. The boss battles and endings were poorly deigned but it's still 95% a great game and the one I had the hardest time putting down this year.
I cannot believe how easily they eliminated Skyward Sword from their top 10. It's not my favorite game this year, but I think it's definitely one of the top 10.

It's not even close to the top 10 for me. I mean, it's an okay game. There are definitely some fun moments in it. But there's also a lot of boring shit bogging it down. It's without a doubt the worst Zelda game I've ever played.

worse than twilight princess?
i mean, i didn't like the demo i tried in gamestop, but fuck
(This does not make it a bad game at all! It's just that MM did everything it did and more, and Twilight Princess had some very compelling plot hooks to keep it above that)
Man, Twilight Princess was pretty good, I dunno why people hate on it so much. The long ass tutorial and wolf stuff kinda sucked but otherwise it's pretty much the only game on the Wii I ever enjoyed.

Jeez, why do I keep subjecting myself to these ERs of Chrono Trigger? I'm just sitting here, thinking that.. hey, maybe the fact that everything is giving massive XP and tech means that you might be underleveled, right? Or... here's a thought, you are completely ignoring half your team, and they are the offensive magic users!
Oh, wait. I know why. It's because I don't own CT. I need to fix that.
Witcher 2 is the main reason I built a new computer
old one couldn't handle it, new can handle it beautifully
I need to somehow find the perfect system that can run both Witcher 2 and Skyrim at full... since my Skyrim is PS3 broke ass Skyrim.
If you can play Witcher 2 it can play Skryim. Skyrim's actually pretty light in terms of hardware requirements when you compare to, say, Battlefield 3 or the Witcher 2.
