I'd like to say that I really loved Casino Night myself as well...honestly because of the music most of all. That stage, with a little luck, is really satisfying on the rare occasion you do fly through it. I'll second the awesomeness of the boss fight. I hope to someday see another boss fight in a 2d Sonic that takes place in a halfpipe.

Pinball themed levels in Sonic are all terrible. I'll never get why anyone liked them. They flat out weren't fun.
That's odd, I was playing back through S2 a bit last night, and was thinking to myself how I hate every pinball-based level in any sonic game ever...except Spring Yard, and I made a mental note to ask you why you thought that one zone would be different from the ones that follows. Oops :~)
Labyrinth used to be one of my least favorite in S1, although I've grown to like it more over time. Spring Yard was one of my favorites, though, for some reason. Maybe the music, dunno :~)
But yeah, Casino Night, Carnival Night, etc, etc, just throw them all out the window for all I care...
One thing I also loved about S1 at least, that was copied to some vague extent in the games that followed on the Genesis at least, was the ebb and flow of the zones. S1 had a flip-flop of easy zone, hard, easy, hard, etc., at least the way I felt (Spring Yard felt more laid back after Marble, Starlight felt more laid back than Labyrinth, etc.). I always felt like that was intentional, like they wanted to make sure you had a break between the hard zones. Maybe it was just me, though...

Sonic 3, Hyrdocity Zone act 1.
And this is why my life is still incomplete. I need Sonic 3 and a working S&K cart.

Sonic Mega Collection is a very decent substitute.

Mega Collection + if you can get it, wfor the extra gamegear sonics. Although it is criminally, CRIMINALLY, missing sonic 2 GG. That is on sonic gems though, which is worth it for sonic CD alone.... plus I found "sonic the fighters" to be quite fun (pretty much a simplistic virtua fighter with some crazy sonic moves).
I must be some sort of oddball. I see everyone doing play-throughs where they watch where they're going and try to get as much stuff as possible. I try to stay airborne just as much as possible. On the first act of sonic 2, I don't think I spend more than 15 of the 30 or so seconds on the ground.
So. I've got Gametap, which has a whole mess of Genesis games on there. What would you guys recommend for recording videos on those?
I mean, fraps seems to work okay, though I'm not sure I want to drop 37 bucks on it. Also, do you guys know of any program that would allow for simultaneous recording of audio commentary? I mean, like Gilder's Mario videos.

Yeah, I bought Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems after playing through sonic and the Secret Rings, and I thought Sonic R and Sonic the Fighters were surprisingly fun, far more fun than they really had any right to be.

and then he moves and shoots some more! I hate that cowboy cat/bat/whatever the hell thing it is, almost as much as I hate Sonic and Knuckles.

That guy is Fang the Sniper. Or Nack the weasel in the US. One of the coolest characters in sonic history. Fuck rouge, we already had our treasure hunter.

Late, but I've never liked Spring Yard Zone either. Those giant spike wheels are annoying to avoid. Not really hard, but annoying.
A quick note: occaisionally, when you grab an item box (say, invincibility or speed shoes) and then go running off in the other direction, Sonic will look like he's pushing something out of his way for a few seconds and just slide along the ground--you can see this in the Marble Zone video. Is this a side-effect of how the physics work in the game engine, or just a random glitch? I've always wondered.
The Chaos Emeralds change the ending scenes you get just slightly.
Sonic will do a little victory leap at the end of the game if he has all the emeralds. After the credits, you'll see Robotnik hopping up and down in anger. If you don't get all the emeralds, IIRC Robotnik gloats and juggles the Emeralds after the credits.

If you go into Windows' sound settings you should be able to configure it so that the microphone is an output as well as an input and change the default input from mic to wave out mix. After some fiddling with volume levels that should give you the effect you're looking for from any program that can record from a mic.
You missed a shortcut in Marble Zone Act 3. Or maybe skipped it on purpose just to show off on the rest of the level, I dunno.
Disappointed in the special stage 3 play, though. You can bounce straight to the emerald area if you don't touch anything when the level starts.
Is UP ON CPU supposed to mean anything? I heard it was a reference to the Genesis' processor (faster than the SNES), but I don't know if there's any merit to that.
Why all the hate on the pinball levels? I (I am probably the only one who thinks so) really like the pinball levels. I'm weird in the fact that i like to bounce around and its cool to have one level out of the ordinary once in a while. But that is just me. Also i found myself going really slow on all airship levels because there are parts where if you mess up, instadeath. Maybe its just that i'm not a fan of instadeath.
I kind of like Carnival Night. Casino Night is okay. Spring Yard sucks (waiting forever for those levatating blocks = lose).
I'm one of few who seemed to have enjoyed Sonic Spinball. Robotnik is stupid huge for some reason and the physics for the few walking segments are all out of whack but I thought it was a fun game.
Played through Marble and Spring Yard Zone last night.
Marble is still my favorite Zone in the first game. Love the music, the color palatte, the level design (particularly jumping on those chains with the weights on them)... I find that it's really a unique level in Sonic-dom, particularly given how much time you spent riding on a block across lava.
Spring Yard is Spring Yard. The music is fantastic, but TSR is right - the color scheme of the level is attrocious (the reds are washed out and there's no other strong color to contrast them), and the whole thing is kind of clunky. One of the few things I like about the Zone are those little half-pipes with the spiked balls spinning in them. The final boss is also pretty cool.
Looking forward to doing Labrynth Zone. Love the music, the color scheme, the underwater segments, and especially the final boss.
I kind of like Carnival Night.
See, I don't really like Carnival Night. Graphically, it's really impressive and fun, but I don't like the emphasis on "scripted" segments (lots of running along those red and white striped tubes, as well as those wind-tunnel like tubes that speed you along) or some of the other weird quirks of the level, like those inflatable platforms. Not crazy about the music, either.
For some reason, the rotating drums that everyone hates never gave me any trouble; I think those are kind of neat.
You missed a shortcut in Marble Zone Act 3. Or maybe skipped it on purpose just to show off on the rest of the level, I dunno.
Yeah, I'm skipping giant shortcuts because I'd rather play through the real level. In my Labyrinth Zone act 1 play through, I skip the GIANT conveyor belt shortcut.
Disappointed in the special stage 3 play, though. You can bounce straight to the emerald area if you don't touch anything when the level starts.
Yeah, I mess up a couple of times during my playthrough.

DUCK HUNT: THE MOVIE
I made this in a day after seeing HotD. I decided to take another lightgun game and make it as accurate as HotD was. Also, as homoerotic, too.
I lol'd when I saw a skiing squirrel and dramatic music.
And stop it, you're giving Uwe Boll ideas.

I mean, I'm smart about videogames, but you're just amazing.
Quick and dirty, since I'm on the way to dinner.

And no Sonic 3. Boo.

But guns are BAAAAAAAD!
I never asked for this!
This is by far the worst performance in my entire run. I get hit twice in this level, and I never get hit again in any other level. Terrible.
But I'll REALLY make up for it tomorrow with labyrinth zone.
I fucking can't wait.
just so you know what you've done.
and where are the fact popups?
Whoa wait what? I got the emeralds plenty of times in S2 and got no extra level. Do you mean Sonic 3 & Knuckles, or am I missing something amazing?
Sonic 2 on the game gear.
It is awesome.
But that fucking jungle level with all the waterfalls..
Fuck.
TSR, Ye be awesome.
They stop appearing.
And I'm working on getting the popups. Relax, it's only the 3rd zone in the first game. We still have dozens of more levels.
A quick note: occaisionally, when you grab an item box (say, invincibility or speed shoes) and then go running off in the other direction, Sonic will look like he's pushing something out of his way for a few seconds and just slide along the ground--you can see this in the Marble Zone video. Also, Does the bonus stage music remind anyone else of Harvest Moon? It's the only thing I can think of when you go to those trippy places.
I've sampled some of TSR's infinite knowledge of the Sonic games during my lurking years, so I'll really be looking forward to those fact popups.

Probably a reference to overall speed in general.
I always thought the boss was weak. Too easy. But it does have my favorite music from the original sonic the hedgehog. It's BGM is fantastic.
