I have allowed myself to be talked into going for a hike tomorrow morning.

I will probably be at least partially consumed by a bear as I assume that is the logical endpoint of a hike.

I will try to take a nice picture of the bear.

I hope this doesn't end up like Garth Brooks.

Well, I can't see it leading to you getting molested backstage at a country jamboree, so it's unlikely to end up like your Garth Brooks incident.

The actual Garth Brooks incident was he was going to have three concerts at Croke Park, then he upped it to five, and after they sold out he failed to get permission to play those extra nights because of local residents concerns, so he played hardball and said "permit all five shows or I cancel", and the council wouldn't yield so he took his ball and went home.

Tav was pretty pleased about it. My sister wasn't.

protectionism in the continental frame doesn't generally mean the same thing, conceptually, so it may be interesting to tease out what, exactly, is being said

this said it could also be nyeah nyeah let's tease the american expat students

Well he specified tariffs to allow companies to compete with China.

the present EU position is that China imposes unfair trade subsidies on its own native companies involving certain raw materials, which justifies like-for-like anti-dumping protections

I doubt your professor has that in mind precisely, though

the framing of protectionsim good/bad is a bit misleading, esp in an era where the basic principle of free-trade-as-default with marginal subsidies/tariffs on certain controlled items is taken as given

anyway it isn't completely unknown to encounter communists who are pretty blase about the impact of tariffs because all social democracy is just faffing about making life at least tolerable before the collapse of capitalism anyway
