They could probably only get the stupid bleeps and bloops and not the real "pikachu" and other name calls and realized they sound terrible so they didn't out them in

    Probably

The "beeps and bloops" are the real cries . They're copyrighted which is probably why it was easier to not use them at all and just have the sprites.

It's also possible the builds given out aren't 100% final and some minor things aren't implemented . I know a lot of streams have been stressing that

that stuff is a holdover from having a crappy sound card, and it sounds like absolute garbage

I genuinely can't believe they continue to use it, it exemplifies pokemons problem with "it is this way because we do it this way and we always have"

Its the biggest reason I play pokemon with the sound off (other than just usually playing games with the sound off)

They sound perfectly fine in the current Gen they've all been touched up.

Saying the names has and continues to be a stupid anime thing that conditions kids to remember the names and it's the thing they should stop doing because it's gross.

    nah

they sound fine, and depending on the pokemon they can make it sound cute or threatening to fit the character

the noises sound like someone slapped a midi keyboard with aboslutely no care in the world and called it a day, and then they continue to use them

    its awful, awful sound design

Actually the noises are based on rather specific manipulations of the Game Boy sound chip and are really fascinating to people who like sound design and also they're really cool and unique and way more interesting than the Hodor thing the anime does which is, has always been, and always will be the worst. Like, a lot of work went into making those unique cries and you can like them or not, but calling them lazy or awful sound design is just, well, wrong.

    I mean

I like sound design and I think they're so awful I turn the sound off

Its totally subjective, and I get that

but I really, really hate them

Also I didn't mean it was actually created by slapping a midi keyboard, just that that's what it sounds like

Anyway I didn't realize the cries were copyrighted

that whole weird split between Nintendo and the Pokemon company is super weird to me

aren't they wholly owned by Nintendo?

Can Nintendo really not just tell them to do whatever they want?

I'm still astonished that they're doing everything right with this game

It's so easy, and considering Nintendo, probable, that they would mess this up

They're actually doing all the things they should be doing

    Hmm

I know they have different names in japan and america

Does pikachu have a bunch of different names or is it just those two?

Rights for Pokemon stuff are weird. Some of it is controlled by The Pokemon Company which is Nintendo-owned, and some of it is controlled by Gamefreak, who are not. I would imagine there are complicated contracts dictating who has the power to approve what.

Pikachu is somewhat unique in that his name is localized as "Pikachu" everywhere. There are some Pokemon like this, and many others that only have a handful of name variations. It really depends on the Pokemon's design and name origin.

Nintendo is very good at making fun things

One of the best by a very large margin

Their first third person competitive shooter, a genre they previous had nothing to do with, is ridiculously fun and inventive.

The only real concern imo was the sharing aspect because Nintendo is bad at online, historically.

I sort of covered it in my edit, but kind of.

    yys1qz3xgqzh.png

In general, if a name is something specific or iconic (like how Arbok is "Kobra" backwards), it tends to persist across localization, but if a name is based on a combination of terms relevant to the design, it usually gets localized.

    Huh

for some reason I kind of figured they'd all have a japanese name and a sort of international name

yeah that'd be real hard to localize then for sure

I mean they could just take stock wildlife sounds and mess around/autotune it or something.

They occasionally do that for new sounds. That literally wasn't an option in the first couple generations, though.

Yeah that was my worry. Without a proper sharing system Mario Maker would have been a no go for me as I think I'll get much more joy out of playing other people's levels than making my own.

asparagus is perhaps one of the best vegetables ever made although it's incredibly easy to make them bad.
