Edit:
Game's out now! Here's a spreadsheet to put level codes in, courtesy of Mr. G.

So
What is Super Mario Maker?
It's a brand new 2D Mario platformer coming out on the 11th of September on the Wii U.
Wait, that's it?
Well, there
is one other thing. In this one
you create the stages yourself!
That's pretty cool!
I know, right? Ever looked at one of those Kaizo Mario romhacks and thought "I could do that"? Well, here's your chance. The interface is really intuitive and pretty much every element from mainline Mario platformers through the ages should be available to you!
What if I don't want to create stages myself?
Well, the game comes with 90 pre-built stages that were made in the engine, including one by Rayman creator Michel Ancel! Also it's possible to share stages with other people, so you can just play stages other people made.
Wait, is this another one of the New Super Mario Bros games? I hate those.
Well, there's good news for you, and everyone with every other variation of this complaint--you can design courses using any of the classic Mario engines, including Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. The graphics and physics all change when you change the engine! Yoshi's Island haters can finally create the "Super Mario World 2" they always really wanted!
You know, this whole "ask yourself questions and then answer them" format is really dumb.
That's not a question, professor.

So yeah, Mario Maker's coming out in a month and I'm really pumped, and I know I'm not the only one. Since news about the game is still trickling in, I figured a thread might be warranted. Once the game's out it'll be a great place to share stages, too. I'll try to get some images in here once I'm not at work.

Edit: Nevermind, I had misread the article. Got a chance to watch the latest video and it looks like they're actually time-gating content (ala Splatoon). There's a shot of a pop-up saying new content will arrive on September 12. I wish they'd go back and do that for Smash Bros. That stage editor is a joke...
I believe the official word is that this is single-player only, but if they're time-gating features, it might be an option that gets added later?
I don't see that happening to be honest. At best it would be locked to NSMB which I don't plan on using a ton anyway
N++ has a random created level select and it is by far my favorite feature in it, and I was really hoping this would have something similar
You can just go on an endless treadmill of crazy stuff
I think I' gonna try and make small stories out the levels rather than try and make super complex things. It's insane to me that that's even possible
Also, I think I want to create a giant pipe maze, most of all. Ground level that transitions to an underground level that transitions into a DEEPER underground level until eventually you're in a stage full of lava and skeletal enemies.
It's a very smart decision, though
All reports indicate that having the full amount of stuff is incredibly overwhelming
It only takes about a week to unlock all the options, and slowly building up your toolset each day so you experiment with just your new stuff is the best way to get used to what each thing could be used for
You only have to finish it once, but you have to finish it yourself before they let you upload it
I think ultimately I just want to make the levels I've already plotted out in my head and that's not possible for at least a 5 days. It's just kid of irksome. I can see where the people who haven't been watching this game since two e3's ago would need that though
Last I knew you couldn't make functional warp pipes, is that still the case?

Oh goodness no.
You can pretty much do anything a regular mario game can. And tons of stuff they couldn't
This has been my general reaction to Mario Maker
They're actually pulling it off!
you're way out of date then, you should check out some of the Nintendo World Championship stuff they did at E3, this game has the potential for maximum bonkers

Yeah, yeah okay
I am IN
what has Nintendo wrought?
Steam Switch FC: 2799-7909-4852
Holy shit.
Oh. Well, that makes sense, but it is disappointing nonetheless. I'd prefer 20 costumes available in all modes over 100 costumes only available in one.
People are going to be making some Mario Paint style songs and shit.
And do you need Amiibos in order to unlock the costumes?
That exact announcement is the reason I made this thread. I am so excited about that.
Yeah, I think everyone should look at this as a new Mario platformer with potentially infinite content first, and the stage builder as a bonus. Because there are way more people who are interested in playing Mario but not in creating their own stages.
At the very least it would be amazing to play as Genesis-era Sonic in SMW mode. Hope that's DLC
You can play as Sonic in a 2D Mario game
it won't feel right because he'll have mario's physics and won't be able to spin dash
So it will be vastly improved.
