So my new role this past 6 months as been as the technology trainer, which is a new position in the company. To start it was mostly just new user orientation, and then we started rolling out additional courses, the first of which was training on a major software upgrade we're doing (Win7-Win10, Office 2007 - 2016, and a couple others), and this week we launched courses on email management, and security awareness. The former started fine, basic mailbox cleanup and organization tips and tricks. The latter... well, this was what I saw on twitter the evening before my security course launched:

Too late to change course, we pressed on and figured anyone who follows SwiftOnSecurity probably isn't signing up for an optional security awareness class. The session wasn't bad. It's not hands-on like our other courses, and no one really asked any questions during the class so I had to wait to see the follow-up survey responses to get a feel for how it went. So far the feedback has all been positive, though there was one response...
    Security Awareness - Session 1 Survey -
It was an eye opener for sure - definitely made me ever so glad I do not have the internet at home, do not do online banking or the like, and confirmed to me that I am doing the right thing in that regard. I told my husband about it when I got home and he agreed!!! The internet will be the downfall of us all I'm sure as there are just too many wicked people out there who will use it for all the wrong reasons. Just hope no one figures out how to use it to activate the red button!!

I'm choosing to take that as a positive sign. if it makes someone who is already scared of technology even more scared, hopefully it makes people who are comfortable with technology at least a little cautious

Waiting to have an interview scheduled is torture. Now I'm just checking in once a week to reaffirm that I'm still interested and to check if there are any updates.

If they hadn't told me that I already had the interview and it was just a matter of scheduling everybody for it I would probably have written it off by now. But the HR person I check in with almost always replies that day to me to tell me it's still getting worked out, but still...with it unsettled my brain keeps whispering to me that it's just a ruse and that there isn't going to be an interview.

    Le sigh.

Well, today was a back and forth affair.

First I got my hands on an email saying that the software I was using was illegal. No further explanation, just "illegal". And by "got my hands on", I mean I wasn't included on the mail, twice. This is a lite version of a piece of software that means I can do one of my two workloads in 1/10 of the time I was doing it, so not using it would really suck and I cannot for the life of me figure out how they managed to get to "illegal".

Then our tech guy went "Yeah, I have the follow-up email to that" and it was basically the number two guy in the company going "I cannot for the life of me figure out how they managed to get to 'illegal', so make sure we keep using it".

Finally I was told that tomorrow they'd be setting up a new computer with a one-month license for the full version and by the time that's over, the automatic solution should (finally) be ready for use. So we went from "it's illegal!" to "dedicated workstation" in the span of a day.

And walking out at the end of the day, my boss told me to expect the head of HR to stop by just to say hello, because by now he's heard so much positive stuff about me.

While I was in the meetings, I got an e-mail. One of my projects I'm on involves critiquing the designs of a fabricator. Given that my company has never had a mechanical engineer on-staff before, it's probably safe to say these guys aren't in love with the change. The guy designing a recent assembly just straight up didn't make alterations for heat flow that I suggested (and opened the e-mail response with a totally dishonest "thank you for your input" before saying he wasn't going to do any of it), so I just called him out hard while using my cheeriest, most feminine writing

And after the last one was discovered and retribution was promised, I let them know I'd take payback in the spirit in which it is intended

It sounds a bit sketchy, the illegal software e-mail thing. The only way I can think of it being remotely legit is if it was issued on behalf of a patent holding company (e.g., patent troll) who has a patent that is allegedly infringed by your software. Sometimes they go after the people who use the software and not just the makers of the software in an effort to extract dollars.

I can't believe I may lose my job because of fucking parking.

Quick recap: because the lot that I and many other employees are using is closing this month, I have to find a new means of parking for the start of October and onward. So far, options are super limited and quite pricey, and the higher-ups at court are doing absolutely nothing, washing their hands of all responsibility.

So far I've only found one for sure option: a tiny lot that's right next door that offers the cheapest monthly service ($46). The bad news is that you have to go in person to buy a decal every month, and it's first come first serve on the 28th at 6:00am. Even if I ended up there on the dot, I wonder how many other employees are aware of this and how big the line could be. I also do not like the idea of having to go through that shit every month just to secure my spot.

The other "pending" option is a new lot that's being built. This lot is further away, has shitty pavement, and is charging over a hundred dollars a month. And again, they're still negotiating with the courthouse, so that's not a definite option.

So far that's it. There are other nearby locations I'm going to visit and see if I can work out an agreement, but I'm not liking my odds. The metro rail, if I'm looking at the transit site right, wouldn't work for me unless I left two hours earlier.

At one point do you look at the bullshit surrounding a job before you decide "fuck it, I'll look elsewhere"? I tell myself it's better than making zero a month, but I don't know what else I can do at this point.

So.. entry level at lockheed making more than I make now, sure why the fuck not. I guess she thinks I have a good shot with that, so let's see where that goes.

Also yay I can go back for my Bachelors and Masters for a 100% free ride if they pull me in, so that's nice too.

I thought Lockheed was closing their body shop, or are you looking to work on their defense/aerospace stuff?

    Yeah pretty much.

So, literally after that rant post, I got super super lucky: I've been cold-calling nearby businesses and lots using Google Maps at work, and found a tiny bail bonds store that just opened up a spot today. They were already servicing employees like me trying to find parking, but one of their clients went silent after two weeks, so the lady said I could take his spot.

I couldn't wait until after work: I took one of my 15 minute breaks that I never use and walked over there to set up payment. At the most it's barely two minutes where I was parking before, and the lot is behind their store where the lady assured me that nobody would go into and potentially burglarize the vehicle.

$50 a month for parking still sucks, but the alternatives (pay $100 for some asshole lot that wasn't even approved, fight it out with other employees over a tiny $40 lot at 6:00am every month, or go jobless again) were far worse.

My heart is literally beating out of my chest in relief.

My brother works for Lockheed here in NZ, doing service and maintenance on LAVs and electronic equipment, but they also service things like Fire Engines and recently rebuilt the city Cable Car. They're basically a high-end service machine shop for highly specialised niche equipment. In an military industrial complex.

He gets to test fire the main gun and secondary systems on an NZLAV every now and then, so the job comes with a few amusing & unusual perks.

Well, partly it's due to stinginess, but also a bit of shame that I'm making the least out of my family currently. If I was able to decide sooner what I wanted to do as a long term career, I probably wouldn't be stuck barely making 30k a year.

But this experience caused me to really count my blessings: it's still better than zero, which is what I was making since the start of this year. I'm still striving to find better opportunities, but I'm thankful for what I've got now.

Friend decided to get his AS in Network Administration. I'm considering the same, and can thankfully conceive pursuing that now that I'm retaining my steady income.

Nah. I can think of two things. One, they mistook the idea of a Lite version for a pirated version. I doubt this but hey.

Second, the people saying it was illegal were probably told this by the very large technology company who are currently contracted to make an automatic system that does, basically, what this program does. If they were to use it, that would definitely be illegal per the licensing agreement, since they're making a competing product. And if we were to use it, we might be less inclined to do work with them if their solution continues to be conspicuous by its absence.

Now I'm not a betting man, but...

I know lockheed likes to relocate people a lot (there's a ton of NC people up here that come from their parking lot)

was it a "we're willing to relocate you, but you have to move to X in order to keep a job" type situation?

not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me

Ten and a half hours of making sauces. The managers working the kitchen over the last three days have slacked on the pars for what we normally carry, so I ended up making ten gallons (double par) each of our three most used sauces and then at least one gallon each of about twelve other sauces.

Oh, and I also sliced up forty-five pounds of parmesean because that got fucked up too.

As I sit here typing, I suddenly remember that I didn't make a half gallon of ponzu as well as a half order of these risotto cake-thingies ... and I strangely do not care.

To be honest, $50 per month doesn't sound like much to me for downtown/central business district parking. That sounds good and I'm glad the situation has sorted itself out for you! :)

If it makes you feel better, I pay for my $350 yearly parking permit by having them deduct it from my paycheck for six months. I know it's not equal to $50/month but I can definitely sympathize with getting fucked on parking.

Can you count the parking pass as work expenses on your taxes?

Me? I'm not sure. I'd have to look into that. On the other hand, I'm willing to let that slide since I get about $500 worth of clothing and shoes twice a year.

    Free gear, I'm cheap date.

Possibly. But there was no way he'd move to Belize. It was more the fact that he was essentially help desk, and Belize is cheap.

If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
