Well as other people have said, some of the award is based on intentions. I think for world peace, rewarding early good intentions by the President is a good thing. I mean, coming off the back of President Bombs-A-Lot, Obama is moving America in the right direction, and the Peace Prize is a confirmation of these actions.

Should someone be awarded a Nobel on intentions alone? No of course not. Has Obama done enough so far and delivered on promises to be a worthy laureate? That's the debate here. Some would argue no, not yet, this award is premature. I might be inclined to agree.

But you could hardly say he was undeserving entirely. Furthermore, should we ever find out who else was in the running for it, Obama winning by such a large margin of votes, perhaps they too were equally undeserving and Obama edged them out. I mean, most people worthy of a Peace Prize have already got one.

It's just weird. It also adds fuel to the whole idiotic debate in America among the media over Obama. I say good on him, he's doing alright. As said, America used to be looked at with utter contempt in the rest of the world. Obama has turned that shit around considerably. That's worthy of some recognition.

I first saw this mentioned on a conservative-kook website, and I didn't believe it.

Like other folks have said, it seems unwarranted. He's a new president, who imo has been a weak president simply in the neutral sense of whether he can get his agenda accomplished. He hasn't been in any concrete way a producer of peace.

That said, I have more beef with the people who really hate Obama than with the president himself. So my thought is primarily: Please, God, don't let them kill him.

I guess the Nobel Committee's point is that you're not in a position to enable this intention and make it a reality. Because you're nobody. Obama, while having similar goals to I hope most people, is. I don't think it should count, but I can understand their rationale. It's at least logical, though I don't doubt also a political move in some ways too.

Noteworthy, sure. Impactful enough to warrant the prize, I don't think so. Not yet. It's still the honeymoon.

Not compared to, you know, developing a new way to fight poverty (Mohammed Yunus, founder of the Grameen bank) or working for human rights -- human rights! -- in Iran (Shirin Ebadi.)

Obama represents a change in policy. He gave a speech. I think the peace prize should go to people who devote their lives to bettering the world and achieve something outstanding to that end. There are people like that. They were thinking of giving it to one of the Tienanmen demonstrators-- that would have made sense.

Instead, if you're an American president, you get a prize just for not being a war criminal.

I'm a paranoiac, I know, but is this an anti-Israel thing?

yeah i don't understand why people are positing that this prize is a judgement on obama's time in office only? the guy had done a thing or two before that. plus he's just a fine, wellspoken diplomat, with good values, which is what the peace prize is all about really

I doubt it, Israel is thumbing their noses at him (and he doesn't have the balls to do anything about it) and the Palestinians feel like he's not doing enough so neither side really cares much for him.

I think after Bush, the world was simply hoping that the American President could speak clearly at all.

I don't know how I feel about him winning the prize this early, but at least it's showing that he hasn't been given up on yet.

REPORT: ‘We Will Overthrow The Government’ — Calls For Violence Repeatedly Stoked By Conservative Voices
Calling the government “destructive of our rights,” the founder of the popular conservative website FreeRepublic called for “removing from office the President of the United States, the Vice President of the United States and all U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives effective immediately” in July. Republican lawmakers, like Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), regularly use the website as a portal for talking points.
