The training is kind of a bitch though if you are gonna be an officer
why do you say that?
I had a friend who had to drop out of field training. Also field training prep looked hard. I mean this was just the Air Force so maybe compared to the marines or something it is easy.
It just sounded hard from what everyone was telling me.
Really wish I wasn't a crazy person and had to leave
The thing about OCS or OTS or whatever the fuck you want to call it-- being an officer, I mean-- is that you have to go through boot camp, then go through another six weeks of boot camp, all the while writing papers and going to calls. People can deal with one or the other, but dealing with both tends to be a bit much.
Personally, I don't plan to get into the shit if I'm not a 2nd Lieutenant.
I will have have a Russian degree if everything goes swimmingly in the next couple years, and with that hopefully I will actually be fluent! I figure that if I don't have a job lined up when I graduate, I'll probably join the Army as military intelligence. Do my 4 years active duty, then look for a job at the State Department or the CIA or NSA or DIA or maybe I'll really like the military!
I've thought about how fascinating it would be to on the ground as an infantry officer in Afghanistan. Terrible as well, but it's still got to be an incredibly interesting and challenging job. I don't know if there's anything better than the military to really teach someone to lead.
I realize I'm on a forum and I'm tipsy and both of these things tend to cause a large amount of arrogance and bullshitting, but I would really like to be a Ranger, at minimum. I know I can do it. I'm smart enough and physical exertion doesn't scare me. I could do it and the more I think about it, the more time goes on, the more than kind of thing weighs on me. It's a now or never type of prospect.
And on another tppic, I read the book Rogue Warrior a few years back (right before I read Band of Brothers-- my psyche hasn't been the same since) and while that book is almost certainly 65% full of shit, it hit on more than a few interesting points. The first one is that you don't need to be buff or athelitic or whatever to be a Navy SEAL. You just need to want it. Dick Marcinko, who wrote the book started the program alongside guys who were 120 pounds and guys who could be centers for the Raiders and the guy who ended up passing was a waif. The difference was that he wanted to be a SEAL more than the guys who were in tip top shape.
There's another story from Marcinko-- which, again, is probably BS-- about a guy during SEAL training who was undergoing an excercise where you have two buckets full of rocks and you have to swim across an Olympic-sized pool, hauling them the whole way. And everyone swam the length of the pool with the buckets in their hands. Then this one guy swam to the bottom of the pool, grabbed the buckets and walked ten feet, then dropped them and swam up, got his breath, and swam down, picked up the buckets and walked another ten feet. He did this until he got to the end of the pool and the guy in charge yelled at him, "Son, what the fuck are you doing?"
And the guy replies, "I can't swim, sir!"
The officer looks at him and says, "Hell, we can teach you to swim!"
Yeah, I've said that before, I'd rather regret joining than not joining.
Even though, I've found you to be a terrible poster, there are wisdom in your words.
Your words sting me so. And then they soothe that sting.
Good luck joining.
Edit: To anyone thinking of joining the military as an officer, check the opportunities they have for college. There are so many programs that you can get into that get you either a stipend or pay your tuition until you graduate. Yes, you are signing 4-6 years of your life away, but if you were planning on it anyways, why not?
Enlisted does not equal grunt. So sweeping generalizations are awesome. But given the option, and if you enjoy the job, then fuck yeah go Officer.
There are indeed several options to go Officer, OTS/OCS, ROTC (helps pay for college too.), going to an acadamy. Hell, there are a bunch of options going Enlisted to Officer if you're motivated enough.
Also, those of you who want to join but dont want to commit as much, the Gaurd or Reserves may be a viable option. Yeah you still sign a contract, still get deployed, etc. But a lot of people have found it to be the perfect balance between the desire to join, and still having a lot of freedom.
No. There's plenty of those, but his has got a bit more oomph to it than just a what-does-it-all-mean thread, as is demonstrated by the thread's contents.

I'll have to look into that. Anything you can tell me google won't?
Being in the military is a lot like being a cop. It's something a lot of men want to do and having families is something a lot of men want to do, but being away from home and having the stress of fighting crime or terrorism or whatever else is not something that tends to make up a healthy relationship, which is a fucking shame.

still gotta make it through training though
Dear satan I wish for this or maybe some of this....oh and I'm a medium or a large.
The training is kind of a bitch though if you are gonna be an officer
that's what training is for
One.
For every person on the front line there literally 9 in the rear.
Innuendo.

Naturally, that guy ended up as a SEAL.
But, again-- I'm tipsy.

A little ironic, soldiers give up their personal freedom so that you don't have to...and occasionally their lives.
perfectly good ied fodder and no branch wants me
