I dunno, this didn't really pull me in and make me want to see another chapter. Then again, I voted for Jim Darkmagic last time and barely anyone voted for that
Thanks guys! I am so happy to see all the great comments. I just uploaded a wallpaper to the main page if you are interested. Hope you like the next two ideas.

OK, not sure I like this comic compared to their other offshoot works (automata et al).
Mostly because
I still have no fucking clue what is going on in this one
Why didn't he die?
Tycho said this is sci-fi western, but we didn't see no sci fi.
Maybe it was magic?
Basically, it feels like half a comic, and doesn't give a real good feel for the where this work might go if they did more of it.
The others were kind of like this before the became fully-fledged. This is an idea that G&T have been stewing for more than a decade - it's not going to be half thought-out.

I'm sure they know what is going on, but I went back and read the first Automata and Lookouts comics. Both of them did a very good job of laying out the premise of those stories.
Lookouts would be about boys in a dangerous magical forest, where they will fucking die if they don't pay attention.
Automata was summed up in damn near the first panel with the "no heart, no soul, no service" sign.
The only thing I know about Sand is that its got a cowboy and a shit ton of sand. He can't be killed, but no clue why or if it even matters. Basically, it does a much poorer job introducing the setting than the previous two.

Cowboy, can't be killed, hears a lady's voice in his head quoting scripture
He's an outlaw in captivity and about to be executed.
Character, setting, conflict all introduced, plus hints that it's not a straightforward western
I'm intrigued!
My main issue with the guest comics is they have both been awesome to begin with, then (IMO) ruined by the guest artists. That's me though, so I hope we get to see G&Ts versions of the final choices.
This is just incredible. I can't wait to see the other contenders. I know I will be blown away if this is just the first one. I predict a fierce battle between two of the concepts, just like last time.

A Jim Darkmagic comic. It really flopped in the polls.

I'm off to pirate more music, steal software, and knock down little old ladies, then later I'm going to cover my self in Yak's blood, and lay in a pentagram, while reading some Marxist literature and praying to a heathen god.
Oh yeah, now I remember. Jim Darkmagic is a cool concept, it just wasn't near as interesting as the other two. Plus, they do dnd comics from time to time with those characters.

After reading those a couple months ago though I do kinda wish they spent two or three days doing something about his adventures.

This was exactly my reaction to it. I'm glad it's not just me. I mean, I *might* like the concept (it *sounds* interesting from outside descriptions - by which I mean those in this thread, since I don't even think the news post really went over it) but really I got nothing out of this. I don't know.
Like you said, it feels like it doesn't present the universe well enough to really understand what's going on, and given that we're only getting one comic here (outside the possibility of it winning the voting or whatever), that's a shame. If this was the start of a guarenteed arc, I would hold my tongue until we saw more. But as something to sell the concept, I don't think it works.

Maybe the concept is too complex to be explained in seven panels
Sand is trying to hook you on the strength of its art and characterization

The great thing about a story based on the Old Testament is that you know it's got a good foundation to work with.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
i've only seen one page of this and I already want SAND more than I ever wanted lookouts or automata or even oxygen in my lungs
it's a much better hook than any of them, suspense-wise
and I'm sure whatever they show us on Friday will be just as fleshed-out, they rarely offer us something that hasn't been thought through enough to appeal

"Oh what a day, what a LOVELY DAY!"
Really excited to see the other two projects.
Just to say:
This looks amazing.
The issue for me is that the art is gorgeous, and I love the concept. This is possibly my favorite Penny Arcade comic ever.

This was pretty much exactly my reaction at first. I liked the art, but I didn't get it.
But if the rest of the comic is anything like the blurb that was posted earlier in this thread, then I absolutely must read more of this.
