I haven't done it yet, but apparently when you put the Commissar Lord in a Chimera...

    picture!

    He says it!

I was pretty surprised myself. I was playing around earlier and I had to stop and laugh when I heard that.

I wish the commissar and the general were swapped. I love the commissar so much but the general is just way more useful in every way.

That is pretty cool though. IG also go "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this!" when you upgrade them. So many references in this expansion.

One of the Inquisitor's lines is "Our chief weapons are fear and surprise!"

I'm going to miss the old Ork voiceovers but I suspect I'll get used to the current ones. Eldar and Space Marine voiceovers seem fine.

    Any cool new lines SM-wise?

Don't think so, but the old Force Commander's been replaced by Diomedes now, and he's got a different batch of lines. Haven't heard them yet.

EDIT: Haha, they temporarily closed down the official community forums. Call me cynical, but whilst they say it's due to site traffic, I'd be surprised if at least part of the reason wasn't to prevent the community going absolutely ballistic over every minor change in the first few hours of the beta release.

I couldn't really blame them if that was the reason either.

Also - one of the IG said "It's dangerous to go alone, take this" after an upgrade last night, not sure which one said it though. I wanted to find him and give him a commendation.
    EDIT: Damnit, too slow.

Noticed a few eldar lines seem to be..different? Maybe a slightly higher pitch or something

While we work towards a fix for code distribution for the Beta we wanted to let you know about two important things:
First, to get the beta in your hands as soon as possible, tune in to our Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/wh40kdow) and Twitter pages(http://twitter.com/wh40kdow). We’ll be giving out as many keys to our followers as possible, so keep your eyes peeled.

Secondly, we’ve closed the forums temporarily to so we can keep the community up while we squash a few bugs.
Thanks for bearing with us while we tackle these technical issues.

there probably will be a bunch of extra beta keys once the community forums are back open again (Ill have an extra key then if theyre still handing out 1 to every forum member)

Don't know if it's been said here, but contractual obligations forced the voice work redo.

    God.

    Fucking.

    Dammit.

I can't imagine how lame it'd be for the voice actors to try and match the exact awesomeness of the previous voice overs. You can't just "redo" shit like that. Sometimes you just had a bad day and that festering anger is what makes your Space Marine sound particularly scornful when he says "not so arrogant now".

The ork voices and eldar lock and announcer hurt me pretty bad...

    On the gameplay:

I like the new units in idea but not implementation. They are ridiculously powerful and don't cost all that much. Leman Russ vs Baneblade is basically "how fucked will I get in the next 2 minutes if I wait to spend my money". There is no choice here. I will never buy a Carnifex again. All the T3 super units are "I win" buttons, in a bad way. The late game is going to suck some serious testicles, particularly in team games. This shit needs to be borderline impossible to afford, rare and epic events in the game, or they need to be less awesome, something has to give here.

The only positive here is that at least everyone has a ridiculous unit, it's just a matter of which one has the best one. The Swarmlord is probably up there, if not the best.

Also, Manticores in my base, shooting your mans, is awesome.

Played a few games, my impressions.
IG are good, too early to decide if they're absurdly OP. The lasturrets are great for holding down somewhere quick in Tier 1, but quickly become obsoulete later. Sentinels are good, that stomp is maybe a little too good with that damn stun. Catachans' grenade launch thing is ridiculous.

Stormtroopers seem lackluster. Only their AV seems worth getting, but I've heard their Recon upgrade is good for ninjacapping. Ogryns are practically the walkers of IG. Manticores are lol. No idea on Chimeras.

Didn't do too much with a Leman Russ but a Baneblade.. my god.

Hmn. Eldar's Autrarch is wildly fun. Drop grenades on a line, have her fuck up stuff and then jump out if things get too hairy, only to pop out with another grenade volley.

Noise Marines seem the most balanced out of all the new units, but they have nearly instant gibbed GM squads with one shot with the Noisemaster upgrade.

The Swarmlord is just GG when he comes out. Took on an entire Ork army when I sent him over there in a team game. Didn't play with SM or Orks.

Except for the Battlewagon (it has staying power, but doesn't have the crazy damage dealing or army buffs the others have) I have to agree that right now the only reason not to build the super unit is because the other guy already has his out and you need something to fight it right now.

...and while I don't think the Swarmlord is the best (that IMO goes to the Baneblade) it is certainly the most idiot-proof thanks to it's speed and the fact that your suppose to have your whole army running around with it.
Also, Manticores in my base, shooting your mans, is awesome.

I haven't played Capital Spire as IG yet... but I can already see the rage as they discover that yes, there is something worst than plasma tacs firing over the ridge :P

Hmn. Yeah I bet Manticores are pretty powerful in team games, as theres a lot more of the "Throw more men at it" style fighting there. Big blobs... less microed units. I bet the manticores really clean house.

Also, more people should hang out in the PA DoW 2 steam group chat, since you can actually set up to have that open within the game and turn off the general/public chat.

What is the PA DoW 2 steam group? I remember someone listing the ret beta steam group, but I think that was the general group, not the one we made for ourselves.

    Some VA impressions now.
I never did play Chaos in Chaos Rising so I can't comment on any changes made from that to Ret, so I will omit them from my impressions, as well as SM and Orks, whom I haven't played around with yet.

Imperial Guard: Yeah, these guys are British in space. Well U.K., since Scots apparently drive all the tanks. Guardsmen sound like they should, saying cool quotes like "We're the Imperial Guard, they're the enemy!"

Catachans sound more like Steve Blum than Arnold or Rambo IMO.

When playing against a Hive Tyrant player as the Lord General, he quoted in a safari hunter voice, "Ah, we're hunting the Hive Tyrant today!" Also another gem, "Take out those Warrior vermin!"

I love the Sentinel's voice acting. It's even more British than normal. "Get away from me you gits!" *STOMP!*

The Tyranid voice over... I can't really understand it. It's growly and better, but I can't understand a damn thing.

The Eldar.. hard to tell. I like the Banshee's voice, for example. Sound more experienced now. I love the Autrarch though. A quote I loved? I sent her to attack the Lord General, and she says (paraphrased), "You hardly fight any better than your soldiers, General." I love her more than the Farseer.

I really like the feel of the army though. Voice acting, the kind of units they have, etc.

Nerfs or buffs to come, I'm going to be rolling with the 4th Brimlock Dragoons (chimera specialists :D) for quite some time.

Oh my. Manticores make HWTs extinct. They can't unsetup fast enough to dodge them. Manticore = insta kill on at least one HWT. No more, since once a Manticore's existence is known HWTs should be relegated to capping duty. Although Manticores are actually at their most dangerous to capping squads...

It's a Beta test, and matchmaking is exactly the sort of thing we need large scale public testing to prove out and find bugs in.

Hmm, I think the Catachan Devil's Explosive shot is bugged...

It works fine and all, but it also takes as many multipules of 40 energy it can take when you use it... I though that it was accually 80 and the tooltip could just be wrong, but if I start off with the grenade barrage first (which is only 45), I can fire of an explosive shot right after... not to mention when they leveled a bit and had more than 120 energy, explosive shot now took 120 energy...

Also, they are in fact awesome in melee, seen them drive off sluggas and unupgraded banshees with out having to resort to abilities... whoever thinks IG have no melee untill T2 never had thier Catachans stand thier ground.
