Indeed, this is bullshit. Rewarding those who preorder with exclusive content is fine, and if it an extra case, OK. But four extra cases, with anyone who preorders only being allowed to have one? That is bullshit of the highest order.

Relax. They will just release them as DLC for five bucks each despite probably being short.

Oh, that does kind of suck. Still, try to keep perspective. Whether or not you have one extra subquest or not isn't going to make an impact on the overall experience.

Just read a couple of reviews for Bulletstorm and the gameplay sounds like a lot of fun. It's a shame that I find everything else about the game repulsive.

Also, is the title meant to be a reference to Bonestorm (from the Simpson's episode) or is that just coincidence?

The game includes a TV-Edit version, if the language is what turns you off.

Usually PA is a bit more creative with its vulgarity, but it's cool that they give an option to filter stuff in the game.

Iwata: In Nintendo's past history, (Hiroshi) Yamauchi-san has said, "The hardware is just a box you buy only because you want to play Mario games." Those were his exact words. (laughs)

    Miyamoto: I remember that! (laughs)

Iwata: Though the way he said it may be a bit rough around the edges, it was a very easy-to-understand explanation of the business model at the time.
Miyamoto: Well, basically speaking, over half of the built-in software was not planned by me from the beginning. Many people within the company suggested and researched many things, which made it happen in its current form.

Iwata: Oh, right. For example, in AR Games, you can add various objects to the real scenery seen through the camera. This will allow you to mix the virtual world with reality. And this is something members of the Entertainment Analysis & Development Department (EAD) have been working on for some time.

Miyamoto:Yes. It started off like their science fair project, for which we did not have any specific hardware to run. (laughs)

Iwata:And when you first saw it, you knew it would be a great idea for a new game?
Miyamoto:No, I didn't! At the time, I said, "We can't use that kind of stuff as a new game." (laughs)

    Iwata:(laughs)

Miyamoto:I said something like, "You can't let trends decide what you do."

Iwata:(laughs) You are very strict on not following current trends.

A dingo ate my baby and all that got banned was this rotten Mortal Kombat game:
Here's the official statement from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment:

The highly anticipated video game Mortal Kombat, published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE) in Australia, has been refused classification by the Australian Classification Board and will not release in Australia. We are extremely disappointed that Mortal Kombat, one of the world's oldest and most successful video games franchises, will not be available to mature Australian gamers.

WBIE would not market mature content where it is not appropriate for the audience. We understand that not all content is for every audience, but there is an audience for mature gaming content and it would make more sense to have the R18+ classification in Australia. As a member of the iGEA, WBIE is reviewing all options available at this time.

Easily fixed by a import. I'd be doing this anyway if I buy the game, and if I actually want dlc for the game (I doubt it) I can always import a psn card to.

Edit: It is probably also worth noting that since fighting games like this seem to devalue so quick in the UK that it is in Australian's interests to import anyway.

When the economy prevents a game.....

And so me and David had met for lunch a number of times, and we were trying to come up with a game to work on. And we actually pitched them an original IP, which was a game called Defiance. (I would love to be able to make it at some point.) The idea behind Defiance was that we kind of took the alternate [route] that intead of like, "happy Lord of the Rings land" in which the evil people get killed and the ring gets thrown into the volcano - what happens if Sauron won? So, [it was the idea of] making a whole fantasy world based off of: "What does Sauron become, and what does the world become, if Sauron won?" We had been talking about that, but it was a big-budget project. And so at that point, as we start to get into late 2008 and 2009, the "badness" occurs with the economy.

Instead DS3 got made. I hope it sells well so we may still see "Defiance".

This is what shows up when you go to the site:
    Dear Xbox Community,

First, thank you for visiting MyGamerCard. I apologize in advance if this turns out to be long or disjointed, or if things don't even make sense or seem relevant; there are a lot of things I want to say, much of which I'm not even sure how to say, and even more that I will forget to say and will have to add in later.

For over five years, MGC has served the Xbox Community in ways that I had never imagined. What started as a "test of concept" for a few Xbox.com forum users led to a rollercoaster ride that has been one of my life's greatest adventures.

When I started working on the code that would eventually become the heart of MGC, I certainly did not imagine that nearly five million unique GamerTags would end up using it. Nor could I ever fathom that the handful of requests that saturated my home cable modem (and kept me from playing Halo 2!) would eventually require five servers to handle the load of thirteen million daily requests!

I don't share these numbers just for show: to me, they're testaments. Testaments that such a service was useful to the Xbox Community - even needed, and worth nurturing and investing in. I wasn't in it for fame or money, I was doing it because I loved the challenge, the learning experience. Of course the recognition felt great, but mostly because it reinforced that I had created something beyond myself, something I was giving others.

Plus I got to play with fun datapoints, and show my love for programming and gaming at the same time! It was easy to work with a company who recognized, embraced, and respected the concept of community involvement in building a strong and loyal customer base. A true symbiotic relationship that benefitted both parties.

However, in the past few years, that love for community has been lost by Microsoft. The closure of customer-to-company community-centric interfaces (that weren't tech support (no disrespect towards the awesome @XboxSupport!)) was a huge blow for Xbox fans. Especially those who really felt like they had a connection to the company they were spending their disposable income on. Similarly, the Xbox Community Developer Program - the program that was essentially created for MyGamerCard and a select few similarly broad-minded community projects - stagnated, with extremely few updates or new data features (despite constant requests), and waning communication as Xbox was not allocating any time to the program.

To make matters worse, while most of us who insisted on playing by the rules (Terms of Use) of the XCDP, others were showing their lack of respect and selfishness by setting up 'screen scraping' mechanisms to gather additional data from the Xbox website that are otherwise unavailable to us. If you've ever been to Xbox.com and noticed how slow it is - they are the reason why. These sites - some of them for-profit corporations - benefit from having the type of information that the rest of us had been asking for, which quickly started eating away at our traffic. Repeated discussions with Microsoft regarding this issue have gone largely unacknowledged (and certainly un-actioned) by anyone beyond my initial contact.

Eventually, the rise of these websites, coupled with the declining advertising ecosystem, pushed my out-of-pocket expenses upwards as advertising alone couldn't maintain the (quite modest, comparatively) monthly hosting fees. Eventually, the decision had to be made to take down the site. It wasn't (and still isn't) a decision I've made lightly; proof of that is the simple fact that I've been running half of my monthly costs out-of-pocket for over a year now. But despite the sadness of having to shut down this part and chapter of my life, there's a part of me is a little relieved that there's a set 'closure' to all of it, rather than infinite abandonment.

But it hasn't been all bad! In fact, as I mentioned, it's been one of the greatest parts of my life so far. I've been able to make wonderful friendships and business acquantances with community members, Xbox Employees, and industry workers. The technical experience I've learned about programming, database design, system architecture and scalability, community management, public relations, advertising (I could go on).... all of that has been invaluable and much of it not easily taught by a book or online. I have gained jobs from that experience, and I've lost those same jobs when my loyalty to MGC came before the tasks I was hired to do. However, I'm currently in a job that I would like to hold onto (assuming my experience doesn't qualify me for any game-industry jobs, which I would certainly consider!), and I simply don't have the resources to maintain the site or bring it back to a respectable state where it could be self-sustainable.

Is this the last you'll hear from me? One can never say. Obviously I'll still be around personally, whether it be Xbox Live (Morgon), Twitter (@Morgon), or via email (see the bottom of the page). But I still have a number of project ideas floating around in my head, including some non-Xbox related things, so perhaps I'll hit on something that's a fraction of the success that MyGamerCard has been.

Thank you again for your praises, suggestions, and criticisms; awards, interviews and invites; and Tweets, Friend Requests, emails, and posts. But most of all, thank you for being a part of MyGamerCard!

Xenogears and I had an argument about this last year actually. He thought they'd started developing it in parallel with DQIX, it was well into development and would come out in 2011. I thought they announced it way too early, only really started development in late 2009, after DQIX came out and that Square Enix will want to prep the Wii audience with a couple of ports, resulting in DQX's 2013 release. Pretty sure I'm going to turn out correct. :D

I had a theory that the project was moved over to 3DS, but I've since reconsidered. It'll probably still come out on Wii. Square-Enix wants it on a platform with a huge install base and 3DS won't be that for a few years.

    http://www.industrygamers.com/news/sonys-ngp-a-true-game-changer-says-epic-games/
Epic Games announced today that Unreal Engine 3 will support the Next Generation Portable from Sony, with developers able to license the engine tech for the platform now. This does not come as a surprise, as Epic was on hand with a tech demo at the PlayStation Meeting 2011 reveal of the portable. Tim Sweeney of Epic Games presented an outdoor environment reminiscent of the company’s recent Infinity Blade title for iOS.

"We were very proud to be onstage with SCE to give the world just a taste of what Unreal Engine 3 can do on NGP," said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games. "NGP raises the bar for the performance of handheld platforms with its multi-core GPU and shader-based, multi-core CPU. This makes Unreal Engine 3 a particularly advantageous fit for NGP. Furthermore, multiple UE3 licensees are already working with NGP, some of which have indicated they intend to release their games for the platform's launch."

"We see NGP as a true game-changer with a perfect combination of performance, innovative controls and gamer appeal that make it truly a high-end console in your pocket," said Sweeney, founder of the company.

In a message on Twitter last week, Rein announced that Epic would be showing its “proposal of what the next generation will be, as powered by Unreal Engine 3,” with the company announcing yesterday that a possible new version of the engine would be shown at GDC 2011.

“This technology demonstration is nothing short of breathtaking. It reminds me of when we first showed Unreal Engine 3 to the world and people were amazed,” said Epic Games President Dr. Michael Capps. “It’s like seeing the Unreal Engine all over again for the very first time.”

“For those devs asking, yes, you'll be able to play with our Sony NGP demo and Dungeon Defenders NGP behind closed doors in our GDC booth,” said Rein in another tweet yesterday.

We've heard rumblings over the last week about layoffs at True Crime: Hong Kong developer United Front Games, but last night a representative confirmed to us that "a number of roles have been made redundant" at the studio, specifically as a result of the cancellation of True Crime. The "recent activity" page for UFG on LinkedIn, a business networking site, shows at least 25 people who were affected.

Despite the layoffs, we were also told that, "UFG is still very much open for business and we will continue to ship top games." Additionally, the studio's website has an update message on its front page this morning, lamenting the cancellation of True Crime but admitting, "we understand why." We wish everyone affected at the Vancouver-based studio the best in the coming months. The full statement from United Front Games is available after the break.

Two new job listings posted on SCEA's website reveal the company is getting serious about PlayStation 3 software piracy.

Sony is looking for a new Senior Corporate Counsel and a Senior Paralegal for Anti-Piracy and Brand Protection. The main responsibilities include "assessing annual SCEA corporate anti-piracy needs and addressing the needs through developing and implementing an anti-piracy program."

"The program to be developed will require a strong strategic online component (taking input from and working with SCEA Marketing, SCEA Strategic Business Development Latin America and SCEA Product Development)," the listing reads.

The jobs also require "collaborating with other anti-piracy organizations, including those of affiliated Sony Computer Entertainment companies, Sony Corporation and the videogame industry's trade association, the Entertainment Software Association."

Other responsibilities ask for "overseeing anti-piracy civil lawsuits and providing support to law enforcement and intellectual property agencies on behalf of SCEA." Additionally, one of the requirements is having "knowledge of online investigative practices and online databases (e.g. how to find owner, administrator, ISP associated with a given domain name, etc.)"

It was only back in October 2010 that Sony slashed the US price of the digital-only PSPgo, dropping it from $249.99 to $199.99.

In addition, a further 13 titles have been added to the discounted Favourites and Greatest Hits selection which retail for between $9.99-$19.99.

“The PSP system set the standard for complete portable entertainment and continues to be the premiere destination for gamers on-the-go,” SCEA's SVP of sales Tim Bender.

“Nearly six years after its initial launch, demand for the PSP remains strong. This new price point enables us to broaden the PSP platform to a larger group of consumers who are looking for best-in-class handheld entertainment.”

Following the recent devastating earthquakes Sony decides to skip territory for now

Sony has decided to cancel the release of PS3 racer MotorStorm Apocalypse in New Zealand.

Kotaku reports that the move was made as a result of the recent devastating earthquakes that have hit the Christchurch region.

Retailers have been telling customers that "the decision has been made now out of respect for those affected by the earthquake", though adds that a release at some point in the future might not be out of the question.

MotorStorm Apocalypse is due out in the UK on March 16th.

Ugh, Xbox #2 just shit the bed. At least I got to see the corruption happen this time. Though I'm still baffled at how it could red ring. It's definitely not overheating, I haven't turned the damn thing on in 3 months, but it completely broke down in under 5 minutes. I thought they fixed this problem too.

I hope I still have that valid product replacement plan at Futureshop. Otherwise... I highly doubt I'll bother replacing it in the near future.

The rumors are now confirmed. Obsidian goes the double fine route (at least a little bit) works on an Original XBLA game.

    http://www.gamerevolution.com/manifesto/an-interview-with-obsidian-head-feargus-urquhart-4381
We're also working on an original IP XBLA game. so that hopefully will be out first quarter next year.

FU: It'll be an action RPG that's focused on fun, not Dungeon Siege, it's quite a bit different in a different genre with a different camera.

No mention of the PSN or Steam at all? Guess that'll be the first Obsidian game I don't buy.

The Publisher could be Microsoft. Which would explain it.

    Bizarre begins again:
Exactly a week after Bizarre Studios closed its doors for the final time an all-new studio has risen from its ashes.

After a three month consultation period Activision closed down Bizarre Creations last week, putting an end to nearly twenty years of history from the Liverpool studio that spawned the Project Gotham and Geometry Wars series among other hits.

Lucid is formed from former staff at studio, and is headed up by Pete Wallace. "With the great history of Bizarre behind us, we are proud to be part of Lucid and are committed to the UK game development community," said Wallace, "We plan to build a studio which encourages open communication with its partners, customers and other developers."

Although no titles have been announced just yet the studio is in talks with several major publishers about pursuing projects, and it's actively hiring in the Liverpool area.

Edit - It blows my mind that people who post in Penny Arcade of all places find Bulletstorm's humor too low-brow.

This, every multiplayer game that comes out gets one guy going "Ok making a meta-tag for people to add so they can game together, any suggestions?" and 80 people posting "WANG FIGHTER IV!" "KILLWANG 3!" "WANG OF DUTY 3!" "Wanglo: Reach"!

The game is just over-the-top goofy in it's language, there's even one part where the main guy questions how stupid all of it is (and is totally right). To be offended by it is to be offended by something like The Naked Gun isn't a serious crime drama.

There's a difference between 30 seconds of comic and 8 hours of gameplay.

Part of humor is not overstaying your welcome. Brevity is the soul of wit and all that jazz.

Exactly. Bulletstorm tries to be over-the-top goofy except it fails at it. Low brow humour is mega-great if it's actually funny. Bulletstorm isn't is all.

Are there precedents for big retail PC games getting Steam support but way later?

Dawn of War 2? The game and its first expansion used GFW Live but the second expansion (out next week) is using Steamworks. I'm not sure what's happening there though, whether they're patching out GFW Live entirely or what.

Edit: Hah, beat your edit. But:
Anyone wanna take a crack and what the deal is with Dragon Quest 10 after 2 years of silence post announcement?

Xenogears and I had an argument about this last year actually. He thought they'd started developing it in parallel with DQIX, it was well into development and would come out in 2011. I thought they announced it way too early, only really started development in late 2009, after DQIX came out and that Square Enix will want to prep the Wii audience with a couple of ports, resulting in DQX's 2013 release. Pretty sure I'm going to turn out correct. :D

I'd assume we'd see it next year instead of 2013.

What DQ ports are hitting Wii?

Exactly. Bulletstorm tries to be over-the-top goofy except it fails at it. Low brow humour is mega-great if it's actually funny. Bulletstorm isn't is all.

It does manage to be a pretty good game though.

Also, to whoever was comparing Bulletstorm to PA's Wang thing. While it's comparable at face value, outside of naming a group Wang something or something Wang that's... pretty much it.

There was a solid hour of Bulletstorm where every conversation had "dick" in it and just like if I hopped on PA's TF2 server and "wang" was mentioned every five minutes I'd grow pretty tired with it.

A new year, a new COD.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-02-25-modern-warfare-3-reveal-for-gdc
A new website has emerged that suggests Activision will reveal a new Modern Warfare game next week.

According to That Videogame Blog, press have been sent dog tags with a link to the website findmakarov.com. The bloody tags include the message "end the war" along with the details of Sheperd, one of the villains from Modern Warfare 2.

On the website is a countdown timer. There is just under five days left – putting a reveal slap bang in the middle of the Game Developers Conference.

Will we enjoy a Modern Warfare 3 reveal next week?

Last month reports suggested Infinity Ward's first game since the headline grabbing sackings of early 2010 would be a prequel to the first Modern Warfare.

Sources claimed the game would be set immediately before the events of Infinity Ward's 2007 shooter, and delve into the backstory of the Ghost character and explain how he was recruited into Task Force 141.

Could Sledgehammer Games be involved in development? Singularity developer Raven is also rumoured to be working on Activision's FPS juggernaut.
