[E3 2011] NINTENDO - Post-keynote wrap-up and discussion here!
What are you talking about? Its pretty clearly more powerful/has a ton more RAM than the PS3.
If that's true, I'm happy! I read someone saying a page or two back that it was less powerful than 360. Do we know anything about its horsepower?
You know, I think the power we see WiiU display will be highly contingent on whether it's also supporting a screen controller or two at the same time as the TV. That could be the difference between "a little less than 360" and "whoa this is about as good as a 2 year old PC!"
PSVita is exactly what you come up with when you focus group something too much
Wii-U is exactly what you come up with when you don't focus group enough
But the name doesn't matter.
I'd really like to see them flip the location of the stick and the buttons on the right side, and I wish it didn't have the Wii all white aesthetic, but other than that... $399 or less and I think I'm sold.

Apparently holding it in either position is pretty comfortable.

The bottom of the tablet looks like a fucking ledge, so it makes sense. I also love that they may have finally designed shoulder buttons that are usable by both the index fingers and the middle fingers comfortably.

By the way, according to this spec sheet the WiiU controller includes a "sensor strip," which is certainly for Wii remote pointer control. The controller becomes a tiny screen to play your old Wii games on.
That's a pretty nice detail to include.
Someday they could make a camera stylus that gives you other fun control methods using that strip.
I don't get why people thought this will not have the wii name in it? it is the highest selling console nintendo had since the NES.
also names are pointless, i buy a system if named the not'see if it plays like a dream.
I was expecting the Wii to be in there just because it is so marketable (for all the positive as well as negative) as such but the Wii U just sounds so stupid.

This literally just popped into my head:
Trauma Center Univeristy.
Screen has the overall body health and hot spots, Tablet has the working area, use the Wiimote to pick up pieces and do the fine-tuned work like a microscope or a scalpel. Or reverse that - use the screen as the main operating space, tools and samples are stored on the tablet.
Edit: OH shit, using the Tablet to do X-rays/Radiation treatment.

Also, keep a couple points in mind. I too was incredibly underwhelmed by the bird tech demo. It looked mediocre. However, there's apparently a much more impressive tech demo that journalists are raving about that nintendo isn't showing to the public because they are all on crazy pills. Also:
- Both the bird and Zelda tech demos were apparently in 1080p at 60fps
- When we saw the bird demo, it was over a stream which apparently hid a lot of its more subtle details - The bird demo was, according to reggie, made awhile ago using early hardware
- Both the bird and Zelda demos were in real time.
Personally, I think the Zelda demo looks stunning.
Note: Retail is usually weaker than the dev boxes. Not that I believe it will make much difference.
If you're competing against Nintendo, what do you do? You know what Nintendo is planning...kind of. But you can't tell how well it's gonna be pulled off, and how successful it will be at what it does.
Do you try to create something like it and try to get it done before the end of 2012? Do you let them do their own thing and risk letting them get all the gold coins again? What do you do?
Nintendo competition know just enough about what's being done to make a bad decision about it.
Kinda genius, really.
Nothing. Microsoft will sit and sell Kinects. Sony will continue to push Move and 3D. Nintendo showed third-party titles already coming to their systems on a system not coming for another year at least. The third-party reel created the perception of graphical parity with the 360/PS3, despite the WU looking stronger on paper. The onus is actually on Nintendo to convince gamers to trade up for whatever price their system will cost. Microsoft and Sony don't want to move because they're just really starting to make money this gen.
Katsuya Eguchi, who is working on a five-player Wii U prototype here, doesn't make it sound like that'll be a requirement. In fact, it may not even happen at all.
"We're considering our options with maybe two screens," Eguchi told Kotaku, who said he considers multiple New Controller games to be "an interesting idea." That would mean games that used two new Wii U controllers. Eguchi's five-player prototype, here at E3, has one person using a new controller and four other people using Wii Remote-Nunchuck combos.
While Eguchi didn't explain why Nintendo isn't looking into four-new-controller gaming, it's possible that the Wii U couldn't output to four screens at once (plus a TV). It's also simply possible that Nintendo would find that configuration too pricey for its customers. Nintendo hasn't said what the new controller will cost. But Eguchi answered my question about whether gamers should be concerned about the controller's price by saying that "I do understand that if the price is too high that would be an obstacle."

Early dev kits for the PS3/360 were much weaker than the final product. Typically the only thing that is better is RAM (need to run debugging).

I will buy one so I can play my back log of games without using the TV with my head phones. I'm also a Zelda addit so that help Nintendo sell me this stuff.
I'm sad that I can't play my collection of Gamecube games. I'm actually interested in the virtual console now as long as everything is transferable.
My only two complaints are:
*That it just doesn't use normal Blu-ray so that I could use it as a BD player.
*That it doesn't have a USB3 port for an external hard drive. I'll be getting a giant SD card for this thing before I go external HD.

That's a bummer. Two new Controller support it something that should be in there.
Early dev kits for the PS3/360 were much weaker than the final product. Typically the only thing that is better is RAM (need to run debugging).
The PS3 1000 Dev kit had more RAM (512) and a better GPU if I remember correctly. The Kinect prototype was also more powerful than the final retail unit. The Alpha Xenon kit ran at 3.5+ GHz, not the 3.2 of the final unit, but the RAM was lower in the original.
So Reggie admitted that the 3rd party footage shown at the conference was all X360/PS3/PC footage.
Someone around here said it looked "almost as good as x360" :P
I still stand by that the final hardware isn't ready yet, and it is why they haven't specified specs or shown anything running on "definite hardware" besides tech demos.

And completely fucking pointless, since you won't be able to be accurate enough from far enough away to use your Wiimote with a 6" screen

Nah, it'll work fine. You really think you'd have difficulty propping up a tablet on your desk and pointing something at it?
You really have no idea what the power 7 is capable of.
I really want to know what the hell the WiiU is using for graphics now, and the amount of RAM. Even the lower clocked power 7 chips crap all over the cell and xenon. If we actually get a gpu to match the cpu, this system will be a friggin monster.
I mean, obviously the WiiU's cpu wont be a fully functioning, power 7, would gen way too much heat for that tiny box. But based on transistor counts wasnt each xenon core only the equivelant of abougt 20 -30 percent of a power 5 core? The power 7 is MAGNITUDES more powerful then the power 5, so by contrast the cpu in the WiiU should utterly destroy the xenon. Even the cell uses HIGHLY modified power 5 cores.
The shear ammount of calculations per second will utterly surpass both the ps3 and 360.
****CAVEAT**** These chips are memory hungry, to fully utilize a power 7 core they are gonna need at least 256mb of ram in a closed box system per core, preferably 512 mb per core. If this thing is running a quad core power 7 derivitive I hope to god that ninty meets expectation ramwise.
Well the rumors are that it will be a triple core CPU. And I also heard a rumor recently that said that dev kits have 1GB RAM, but the final console will have 1.5GB.

Yeah I don't think this is for playing Wii-style games on the wupad screen. See the golf demo. The wupad was on the ground as the "tee" and a wiimote was used to hit the ball. The TV looked down the golf range. I think this is the kind of idea that the wupad sensor strip is for.
I think it is extremely unlikely you'll have multiple video displays in play simultaneously, apart from tv + controller setup we've seen.
either the output would have to be identical (and then why aren't you just looking at the same thing), or the graphical fidelity would have be so low (think Wii Sports),
and this is all assuming the wireless display abilities could even handle this much data throughput. and based on similar technologies in the PC realm - I really don't see it going beyond 2 screens at once.
this is all based on my understanding the controllers are passive and not doing the calculations at all - it's all coming from the wii u console

Then, I guess, Wii-U players will be joining PC diehards in complaining about low-RAM consoles limiting game development or some shit.
