There is always going to be a market for portable systems for yeah like roadtrips and stuff for little kids, because they probably won't have smartphones to begin with. But for the teen/adult age crowd, smartphones have essentially replaced handhelds for entertainment on the go.

Reading this comic it occured to me that I don't even own a console, so people like me are maybe part of the problem for these companies

I just have a PC that I use to do everything in the house, and a phone that I use for Tetris on trains and... well... phoning people up.

At 40 dollars a game, I'd rather buy DVD's for the kid for entertainment. Or hand him my phone to play games in the car.

My wife's laptop is so small it's easy to set up as a portable DVD player. I can put games on that too. It's also a laptop, so we can use it at hotspots to get map directions, check email, etc.

Again I already have something that meets the function of a handheld plus do other things, so why buy a handheld that can only play those games. Nintendo would be better off making games that can be ported to a tablet or laptop and charge a lot less. That market is just going away.

Nintendo should just make a smartphone. I bet they could do a pretty good job. Shit, I'd buy it.

I would love it if we could start seperating some of the services from their hardware. I would love to have a decent portable system, be able to play Nintendo's and Sony's games on it, slap in a chip and get my cellphone service as well. Give it some smart phone apps and off we go.

But until we can combine everything we want to do into one device, carrying the myriad of devices around is a pain.

In order to add people to your contact list, you would have to be within a 5 meter radius of that person, and know the 12 digit Friend Code specific to their Nintenphone. Likewise, they would have to know your code, and then you both have to accept the request within a 4 second window.

My DS Lite hasn't been turned in in almost three years. I have a passive commute, but I usually read books during it. Similarly, when pooping or at a doctor's office, I read a book or play angry birds, depending on how much attention I expect to commit.

Real, portable gaming simply isn't something that appeals to me, and I suspect much of the market is like me. Full-on gaming with engaging story is something I do when I'm relaxing at my computer or on the couch, with lots of time to invest. The only time that portable gaming is viable, it has to compete with reading, responding to e-mail, news browsing or angry birds.

What is this I don't even.

I was thinking about trading my 3ds in towards a dsixl because dat screen but apparently all the trade-in shops have already gotten wise to the price drop and adjusted their shit accordingly

I bet they won't stop one person from buying a 3ds for $250, though

So... the guy needs to tell you his phone number, and the person recieving the call needs to pick up before it stops ringing.

I'd probably prefer to be closer than 5 meters to learn his phone number, though. It's easier to hear clearly when they're closer.

I'll keep buying handhelds as long as they keep making good games for them

for actual portable gaming cell phone games are better, but I have nothing against sitting on the couch with my DS.

Though in fairness I'd just as soon buy a home console version of a good DS game so I could play it on a big screen

I prefer to have a separate device for making phone calls from what I use to listen to music or play games. I don't like the idea of being stranded somewhere with a dead phone because I listened to too many podcasts or something.

Instead of competing with the iphone, they should try to come up with some kind of agreement with Apple. I don't really know how it would work. But something like an iphone with a cartridge slot. I'm not sure how you could design it so it would be light and small though.

I might be in the minority here, but I would rather have a device do one thing well, rather than many things in a so-so manner. I know it's not that simple, and I understand certain smart phones do many things well, but in my experience, in general, smartphone games just don't satisfy me like handheld games.

    Oh well, it's all subjective.

  • Options
    Black_HeartBlack_Heart Registered User regular
I don't really see a debate on this issue when it comes to handheld gaming... in that the games I spend money on for my handhelds are worth the pricetag. I'm not going to get the same experience from Angry Birds that I will get from titles such as The World Ends With You, Dragon Quest 9, Infinite Space, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, Mario and Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story, etc, etc.

I own over 30 games for my DS and about 10 for my PSP, each one of those games is a rich experience that I haven't seen matched yet by any amount of smartphone games.

Having said that however... I haven't bought a single retail game for my 3DS yet and primarily bought it to replace my broken DS Lite. The only game I've played on it is Shantae: Risky's Revenge, since I never got a DSi.

The 3DS is still a brand new system just really needs some games to come out that make it worth purchasing... and there really aren't any yet. I WAS looking forward to Megaman Legends 3... but with that scrapped my first real game purchase for it will most likely be Kid Icarus: Uprising.

  • Options
    EnlongEnlong Registered User regular
Yeah, I'm personally looking forward to Kid Icarus Uprising, and Kingdom Hearts DDD.

I'm confident that the 3DS will have a good library in coming years. If all else fails, developers can just treat it like a DS with more processing power.

I might be in the minority here, but...

... I'd rather have $40 games that feel like a complete game, instead of a swath of $1-$5 flash games that look and feel like something I played on newgrounds in 2002.

Still a minority, by a long, long margin.

I don't see the handheld market going away, and didn't mean to infer that originally. But they are going to have to drastically change and scale back to cater to an increasingly smaller audience with increasingly specific tastes and demands.

Nintendo spent a lot of time over the past few years catering to the casual market, trying to get people into gaming that would have overlooked it before. Within the last couple of years, however, that market has been completely undercut, either through Facebook or the App Store, and will no longer purchase enough hardware or software to make their old models viable. Sony is doing better, in my eyes, as they're really trying to deliver a handheld to a specific game market that phones simply cannot match. Nintendo, in my opinion, isn't doing enough to make that shift.

It is still incredibly presumptuous of me to assume I know better then Nintendo, however, and would be delighted to be proven wrong by all this.

I think people are being a little unfair to the iOS lineup when they dismiss it as Angry Birds and shovelware. It does have "real" games like Phoenix Wright, Civilization Revolution, Doom, Myst, Lucasarts adventure games like Monkey Island, Peggle games, Final Fantasy 1, Tactics incoming...there's plenty there even if you don't care for iffy indie stuff.

That said, I'm a little surprised everyone seems to be exclusively focusing on Nintendo's failures with the 3DS. Sure, it's sucking it up, but have you looked at the Wii's lineup for this year? Good god, it may be the worst year for any console ever.

I can't say I'm disappointed in the Wii. I played the shit out of it back when I first bought it. Then again for WiiFit and Shaun White when the balance board launched. I think I've gotten a good return out of it.

Now its basically a Netflix conduit for the bedroom.

But yeah, Wii U isn't gonna be purchased.

The two games I've put in the most time with on my iPhone are Bejeweled Blitz and Dungeon Raid. I don't really see myself playing any sort of in depth game on my iPhone, but having said that I haven't really missed my DS when I have an Xbox for that sort of thing. I'm probably an anomaly though since I work from home and have basically no time when I'm not near a console and want to be gaming.

I keep hearing this 3DS only plays games thing and I have to ask:

What else do you want a video game console to do? That it has WiFi and a browser is literally a last Gen innovation. Phones

Phone games are on average shit. 1 Angry birds does not a viable platform make.
How much profit was made on Infinity Blade?

    How about Bulletstorm?

Which do you think Epic is more likely to reinvest in?

I know you are basically quoting a giantbomb article here, but there was another giantbomb article reflecting how Epic was going to reinvest in Bulletstorm. So.

I had the good luck to go to E3 this year, and I can almost guarantee that the PSV will change the way a lot of people look at handheld gaming right now. The thing seriously felt like a portable PS3. It's big enough to play at home, and small enough for trips and commutes. It has a front and back touchscreen, dual sticks, and face buttons/triggers. It's also motion sensitive and has no 3D gimmicks. Priced at $250, means I am buying it instead of a PS3. Will this trend catch on? I have no idea. But I was freaking sold after getting my hands on it for 30 min.

I'd just like to point out that the DS was out a full year before anyone took it seriously.

There are valid concerns about the market viability of the 3DS but there were just as valid concerns about the DS.

but in the end I don't really give a damn either way, I just want to play vids; I'll pick up a 3DS when they make a game I need to play, and not before.

yeah I don't think that "non-gamers" started buying them en masse until the ds lite dropped and was also available in pink

I base this entirely on the fact that my sister (who hadn't played a video game since I rented bubble bobble in 1988) bought herself one
