Legend of Grimrock - Old school dungeon-crawl action! It's out... $15
What is this game?
It’s a dungeon crawl game with great atmosphere, puzzles, combat and RPG elements. Here’s a little more detail on the basics of the game.
What platforms are you going to release on?
PC, Mac and iOS. Other platforms might be possible too, after we get the game shipped on those three platforms first.
When is the game going to be released?
We are working hard to release by the end of the year 2011.
Who are you?
We are a four member team of game industry veterans with combined experience of more than 30 years in creating commercial games. We have worked on Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Shattered Horizon and various versions of 3DMark Gamer’s Benchmark. Here’s a post with more dirty details!.
Is the game turn based or real time?
We feel that real time works better with the game we are making. It goes well with the atmosphere of the game since the player can be surprised by creeping monsters and the mood of the combat is more intense. Timing is an essential tactical element and our puzzles also benefit from working in real time. Real time gameplay also helps us differentiate from a number of other dungeon crawl games that have been released over the years.
Will there be a character generation system?
In addition to picking from a roster of preset characters, we intend to include a character generation system too.
How many enemy types is there?
As many as we can churn out. Our goal is about 15 for the initial release.
Will there be a level editor?
Most likely at some point but not immediately with the initial release. We are fully concentrating on making a great game first.
Will new dungeons or expansions be released after release?
Yes, if there is enough demand for them and the initial release is successful enough to keep us going.
What are the PC system requirements?
The bare minimum is a DX9 graphics card and Windows XP.
What engine are you using?
Our own engine.
Is the game going to be digitally distributed?
Yes. The game will be downloadable only.
Where can I preorder this? Can I donate?
We’ll have to wait a little closer to release to get a clear answer on preordering. Largely, it depends on which distributors we’ll end up working with. Collecting donations is unfortunately a little tricky to arrange due to Finnish legislature; not anyone can go around collecting money from poor unsuspecting folks. It’s possible, though, that we’ll put up some merchandise for sale at some point.
That's unbelievably cool. Your new name is cool guy. Let's have sex.

I would love to play this.
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

oh man dude you have to get me a beta copy for my mac I will test the fuck out of it for you
well the problem is there are combat spells, and combat is real-time, so your spells would have to be doing an insane amount of damage to offset how much time it takes to use one versus just slashing a sword.

When I first heard about how Etrian Odyssey, another dungeon crawler, didn't have random dungeons I was kind of disappointed. But the dungeons are all actually really cool. For three whole games.
I think non-random is fine if they have a half decent selection of dungeons to start with, and plan to release both more of their own and a level editor later.
This week has been a lot busier than normal and considerable amount of time has gone to discussing the business side and various publishing options. We have received a ton of email and I think we have answered to everybody now – if you haven’t please check back with us! Because of this we haven’t had as much time as we would have liked to write blog posts. Sorry about that, folks! Anyway, here’s a short summary what has happened on the dev side this week:
+ Missile auto pickup has been implemented. Basically prisoners holding missile weapons will automatically pickup new missiles of the same type when you walk over them. Also if a prisoner runs out of missiles (but does not pickup another weapon in the meanwhile) the prisoner will fill the hand automatically with any missiles from the ground.
+ We have a cool entirely new graphics set for a new type of environment (or “wall set” as we like to call them internally). It really adds a lot of variety to the environments.
+ We have a new armor set and some new first tier melee weapons.
+ Work on save games has started, 50% done now.
+ Prettier mouse cursor.
+ New secret monster has been animated.
+ First three levels are now in beta quality.
+ Juho, our 3D artist who doesn’t have any earlier programming experience, has learned basics of level scripting (wohoo!)
