My first CD was Siamese Dream. Well, the first one I bought. My uncle had gifted me the Batman soundtrack by Prince the year before.

I didn't even start listening to music until I was like 19.

    I can't get nostalgic about it. :(

Twelve years ago some rad dudes from Australia called The Avalanches released an album called "Since I Left You". It had this on it:

    and this

and it was made from like a jillion samples and it was fucking amazing.

Today they finally released a new track from their upcoming second album (we hope). It's called Cowboy Overflow Of The Heart and you can listen to it here (you'll need to register first). It's more poetic than musical but still AVALANCHES.

    !!

I'm not familiar with the Avalanches, but that's David Berman, formerly of the Silver Jews, reading that poem

I never saw the reason in buying CDs. If I wanted to listen to music I would just open up my dad's giant collection of CDs and put some Queen on Bowie on.

I was eventually peer-pressured into buying 'Hits 97' but hated pretty much everything on it and it took me up until 'Fresh Hits 98' to realise that I didn't have to try to like that stuff.

there was only so much thin lizzy, rory gallagher and van morrision I could listen to as a youth.

And my dad didn't have any who so...

Later it was my mums collection of eurythmics, kate bush and abba I would plunder

i remember coveting and constantly listening to The Bangles' Greatest Hits -- and my parents may have even bought a copy just for me -- but the first cd i actually bought for myself was TLC's CrazySexyCool. i had the entire rap in "Waterfalls" down cold; i was constantly disappointed when it came on the radio, since that bit was edited out.

...Does Amazon count? I think I bought one of the Protomen albums on Amazon. I didn't really listen to a lot of music growing up, and even now use Pandora instead of buying anything ever. I've listen to/watched Frontier Psychiatrist like a billion times on youtube though if that helps.

I was a musical late-bloomer, so the first album I ever got was American Idiot, because my dad was at a loss for gifts and it was everywhere at the time (I didn't ask for it).

The first album I ever bought myself was Origin of Symmetry by Muse.
