Armstrong, who turns 41 next month, said he would not contest the charges because it had taken too much of toll on his family and his work for his cancer foundation, saying he was “finished with this nonsense.”

I know that if I was clean I would fight it until the day I died.

This is pretty much my line of thought, I can understand that he might have concerns about his family but if I knew I was clean I wouldn't let that shit go

It seems like when a company settles a case for tens of millions of dollars but never technically admits guilt, yes there can be other factors but giving up means the other side has at least something right about you

The proper term is phArmstrong. Jeez.

Also, USADA's case isn't actually about Lance doping himself, its about conspiracy to distribute and administer drugs.

They were going after the doctors (Del Moral) and the sporting director (Brunyeel), and offered Lance the chance to testify like the rest of the up-till-now anonymous teammates, and he declined.

Given his position on the team, and with the backing company (Tailwind) he was brought to charge instead.

There is evidence of the 2001 Tour de Suisse failed test that the UCI covered up, but that is being used to corroborate the conspiracy charges, iirc, afaik, ianal, wtf, bbq, esq.

Also, Armstrong has a reputation of being a bit of a dick so I'm not that surprised so many people were out to get him.

I met the guy once. I was giving a presentation to him to try and convince him that a sponsorship to the Children's Hospital would look really good.

Dude was fucking around on his phone the entire presentation and blew us off in like the least nice way possible.

So yeah, I can attest to that reputation.

If you're a professional athlete and you aren't doping then good for you, but if you are doping, then you obviously care enough to do whatever it takes to win, so why should you be punished? Pro athletes make a shitload of money, and if someone told me they'd pay me a million dollars a year to be the best I can then I gotta say that doping would not be off the table. I never understood why this is such a big issue.

Because being a professional athlete is about hard work and dedication, not sticking a syringe of captain america formula in your leg.

Everyone who won an Olympic medal this year did it off their own backs. Not by giving themselves a chemcially induced edge over their opponents.

There is no such thing as a captain america formula in the world of PEDs. Regardless of the substances taken, the same hard work and dedication still exists.

Justin Gatlin has several olympic medals and has served a ban for testing positive before. I'm not sure that last statement holds.

Since 1998, more than a third of the top finishers of the Tour de France have admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs at some point in their careers or have been officially linked to doping. The grid below shows the original top-10 placements in each of the past 15 years. Riders pictured have either tested positive, admitted to doping or been sanctioned by an official cycling or antidoping agency. Cyclists whose sanctions were later overturned are not included.

    You know who I like?

    Eddy Merckx

He was a cyclist who did stuff other than the Tour de France

    And won that stuff too

Like, in addition to winning France five times

He was accused of doping a bunch too, but come on, look at the guy:

Miguel Indurain, Big Mig, won the tour 5 times on the trot, had the lung capacity of a whale

Brad Wiggins, the man of the moment, Britains most famous mod, delivered a genius 'And now for the raffle numbers..' when handed the microphone after his tour win

    Bradley-Wiggins.jpg

Graeme Obree, a mad Scottish genius, refused to go pro because he didn't want to take drugs, built his own bikes that were so radical they were banned by the UCI

Isn't one of the things they said he did along the lines of having his blood drawn, filtered, and then put back in?

You might be thinking of autologous blood doping, which is harder to screen for than hormonal blood doping, but it's also potentially really fucking gross.
    Paladin wrote: »
The USADA claims it has 38 tests from 2009-2010 that show evidence of blood doping, plus the 2001 EPO test.

Not saying he definitely did it. But the fact that he gave up is at least questionable, plus that is a lot of tests and evidence.

yeah, the problem with doping is that there isn't a giveaway artificial molecule running through your bloodscream screaming CHEAT CHEATER CHEAAT

doping changes levels of pre-existing hormones and etc already in your bloodstream which could theoretically be naturally occurring in a person with weird biology

This is essentially the issue. Testing methods don't have to be ten years behind hotshit new designer pharmaceuticals to fail. It's a style of doping contingent on replicating upper margin conditions in the body. It's not like juicing the shit out of your muscles for a long term increase in mass; you just need to boost your red blood cells/VO2 max for the short term performance gain in an endurance event.

WADA will eventually have to present its evidence because cycling's various authoritative bodies probably won't strip armstrong's titles just on their say so.

I am inclined to believe that armstrong is probably guilty of some kind of PED use, but also that WADA's evidence probably isn't completely compelling (else this wouldn't have gone on for ten years or however long it's been.) If they're planning to rely on testimony from floyd landis et al, I dunno man

What bugs me is that many dopers (of all sports) will lie in the most egregious manner, even when presented with solid proof they cheated. They'll point at their opponents, rail against the corrupt sporting associations, make up conspiracies on why they had drugs in the samples. Maybe a year or so, they'll finally give up and admit to cheating. This gives the legitimate athletes a 'crying wolf' effect. "Sure Mr. Armstrong, you keep saying you didn't do drugs. You know who else said they didn't do drugs? Mr. Landis. (and Hitler)"

I suppose this way is the best for Lance. Those who believe in him will continue to support him, while those who think he did drugs will feel like justice was done. It's hard to convince either side to change their views, other than him admitting outright he did drugs.

I love Big Mig. I mean, say what you want about the cloud of suspicion over doping in cycling, but that guy was just a freak. There's not a PED in the world that will give you a resting heart rate below 30 and the VO2 max that guy had. It's like Phelps or Thorpe: you just can't dope to provide the kind of basic physiological advantages of truly exceptional individuals.
