Pope Benedict Resigns

V1mV1m Registered User regular
According to the BBC, just heard the news coming through live a few minutes ago

Anyone got any info on this? They're saying it's the first time this has happened since the 13th century.

Last Pope to resign was Coelestin V in 1294 so yeah, been awhile. Hell I never knew they could resign.

Already bets are on a sex scandal.

There was also the western schism.

The health reasons justification sounds like bullshit.

Odds we're about to have another sex abuse scandal break?

This is what appeared on the pope's official twitter account yesterday:
We must trust in the mighty power of God’s mercy. We are all sinners, but His grace transforms us and makes us new.

He's 80 something. He could be ill.

Harry Redknapp has already expressed an interest in the job.

Apparently he was planning to retire from being a Cardinal when John Paul II died. Maybe he figures he's done his fair share.

I am actually amazed this has happened. Completely out of the blue.

    Popes full statement
    Dear Brothers,
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.
Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.
From the Vatican, 10 February 2013

    BENEDICTUS PP XVI

There have been ill popes before.

I could see him wanting to set some precedent or something so lingering popes don't become a thing in this modern world plus it would mean he might be able to politely suggest a successor.

A negotiating stance for a better contract I imagine. Unless the rumours about a transfer to Buddhist Orient are true. They've been lacking a string centre forward for a while.

I thought it was Pope Gregory XII in 1415.

Oh well. There's obviously something bad about to come out. The last Pope was basically a vaguely breathing puppet moved about and pointed at things and he never resigned due to "ill health and old age."

I think shits going down. The Catholic Church hasn't been doing very well in this modern era and I think its going to do some damage to itself trying to figure out which direction to take.

I think thought that it is unlikely that this is because of a scandal. Considering the pedophilia cover ups he was personally involved in before that did nothing to shake his position, it would have to be a scandal MASSIVE in scope to make him resign.

I think he may just be old.

    This is my feeling too.

Being a widely unpopular geriatric probably wasn't his main plan for his golden years. That the church will happily shuffle a shell of a human being around as their leader doesn't mean he wants that to happen.

My understanding was that he was selected in part because he would resign rather than dying on the Pope-throne (there's a throne, right?). They wanted to establish the precedent rather than having some age-addled ineffective guy up there for lord only knows how long.

I also want to out my name forward, purely for reason that I've spent more time in Catholic cathedrals this last week than any pope usually does, due to tourism. Eight cathedrals in nine days has to count for something!

I'm leaning towards either him feeling the church needs to adapt in ways he can't reconcile with his conscience (i.e. condoms in Africa, women as clergy) and he wants someone more progressive to be elected, or they are setting a precedent that the pope isn't just an invalid puppet controlled from below.

I also wonder if the issues with his valet leaking documents is related to this.

Still, big news. Kind of miss Lorc today. I think his take would be interesting.

Hasn't Benedict been appointing a lot of cardinals recently? This would help him pick a favourite.

Also, the Italians haven't had a go for a while and will no doubt expect a turn with the hat

A lot of them are also black.

You can be hesitant and committedly cautious of black representatives and spokespersons for your organization without thinking they are in any way inferior, unsuitable or untrustworthy. It's human nature to resist change and people who are different and markedly new.
