[Hesher] The Unbearable Filth of the Soul
Posts
Along with Inter Arma.
And Amenra's latest is really good.
Try these for ancient dreamy psychedelic black metal pre-gaze. Mellow, immersive, creepy and beautiful.

Try this for something newer with a bit of a mournful -gaze:

Also, as much as I've enjoyed Gojira for the past three records, I doubt I could dub them the heaviest band on the planet. But that's really a subjective thing, I guess different bands are different kinds of heavy.
So I was at the theater Friday with a bloke, watching This is the End, and when the end credits ran, it broke into the bridge groove of Black Sabbath's "End of the Beginning", from their new album 13. I had been underwhelmed with this disc upon hearing it, but presented so loudly in my face, I rather enjoyed this riffing sequence for a minute. Then I went back to listen through the album again...and found the whole thing terribly fucking boring, almost as if each song is just a rehash of 1-2 of their old tunes. I guess I didn't expect much, being that it's Ozzy, they are all getting on in years, but I guess this affirmed to me that they are still capable of rocking their nuts off, I just wish they had done it more consistently on 13...

Seriously great live recording. If the rest of their stuff is anything like that I'm in for a treat.

You're in for a treat.
Also, one of the dudes also made Middian, which is another kickass bootgaze.
Someone talk me away from the ledge.

In which the original Darkane vocalist Lawrence returns and does Metallica style chorus...
(review tomorrow)
this gets me every time
I had pretty much the same reaction auto did to the new Sabbath. Thought it was boring, heard the song at the end of the movie, then tried to listen again and still nothing. So of course, everyone and their mother is talking about how good it is and how it's a return to form and blah blah blah. I even had a friend tell me it sounds like it could have been released right after Paranoid.
FFDP is fairly awful, but I think it's more about the lyrical content than anything with me. The riffs are old Killswitch Engage lite but the Tuffguy-Tapout songs intermixed with the Woe-Is-Me ballads are the worst fucking things this side of Puddle of Mudd or Korn. Another commercial analog would be Volbeat, who I happen to enjoy in a guilty pleasure sense. Their genetic tendencies show through in the music (being Swedish), and as far as commercial fodder goes they are pretty dope.
Right now I'm knee deep in Protest the Hero because I'm learning all the basslines from Kezia and Fortress. They're a true motherfucker to learn, though. Surprisingly, despite their complexity I'm having less trouble learning these than I did the basslines from Sound of White Noise, which I STILL, after three months, have not got down pat. They're deceptively simple basslines so you need to memorize about 16-18 subtle variations on every damn thing because Anthrax are apparently sado masochists and SOWN is their damn magnum opus.
It's their best.
e: also Sunbather by Deafheaven is solid, altho iirc you guys don't care much for them :V

It's actually not poppy at all, I mean it's pretty much what you'd expect if the band were trying to revisit their 70s music, with bulkier modern production. Seriously it felt to me like a 'we need War Pigs here, and Planet Caravan over there' planning phase. Unfortunately it's just really boring...

What the hell is this? I love it.

If you like that, you should check out Sage Francis. He does very similar, overly wordy confessional rap over non-traditional beats eg:

On the topic of metal, I've been into Take Over and Destroy, kinda psychey sludge from Phoenix, AZ

Cubbiebear just put out another video called Still Can't Fly. Its shorter (>3 minutes) more condensed, but a lot more to the point.
Don't remember hearing this band last year, but perhaps I just did and skipped over it. Anyways it's pretty sweet, angry mix of like hardcore and thrash with some sludginess.
Physically and digitally FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS
While I'm on the subject of hardcore-ish stuff, here's another great find:

I figure Tav already knows these guys. It's like an angrier Burnt by the Sun with some Coalesce for good measure.
Great version of this Lake of Tears song

Fun version of this song.
Totally off topic, but is anyone else looking forward to Pacific Rim as much as I am? Because, god damn.
Ayup.
The video itself? I've no fucking idea. The voiceover and music comes from Godspeed You! Black Emperor's F#A#Infinity, and the kid being startled about a minute in is Converge's Thaw, just in case you're not familiar with them.

And it is a glorious amount of cheese.
Edit: While I'm throwing out opinions, I will say this: Warmaster is a damn good album, even if it doesn't measure up to Realm of Chaos. I have all of my music on random while I work right now, and "Rebirth of Humanity" came on. I can't help but love it.
Could you kick a puppy to this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L89jUOVHtps
I could kick a lot of people to that, because it's BAD ASS (stick through the chorus at least).
More menacing = better power metal imo. Gang shouts & GLASS & SOUL-SHATTERING screams that NO OTHER HUMAN is capable of, except Mariah Carey...of whose humanity I am not yet convinced.
Also, since I'm being all negative and terrible and shit, I wanted to say that, @autothrall, the Death Metal list you made a while back is awesome. I'd already heard a lot of the stuff on it, but you introduced me to bands like Apophis and Acrostichon that I never would have heard otherwise. Thank you for having such incredibly awesome taste.
Right guys?
Been listening to the two Entrails records I haven't yet reviewed (the first and the new one) and despite remaining total Entombed clones (I swear they even use the same logo and they chose a name so they'd be on the CD racks/stores right next to them!), they are actually quite atmospheric and suck you right into the grave.
