I'm just listing my top 10, and even then only the top three are really in any order.

    1. Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS)
    2. Tomb Raider 2013 (360, PC, PS3)
    3. Saints Row IV (360, PC, PS3)
    4. DmC: Devil May Cry (360, PC, PS3)
    5. Dead Space 3 (360, PC, PS3)
    6. Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)
    7. Pokémon X and Y (3DS)
    8. Super Mario 3D World (WiiU)
    9. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (360, PC, PS3, PS4, WiiU, XB1)
    10. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS)

Some explanation on some of the choices that I kinda surprised myself with:

Before DmC came out I had been disappointed by every Ninja Theory game. The initial reveal for what they were doing to reboot the series really put me off. I thought this game was going to be hot garbage. Then I actually played it on PC, and I was forced to do a complete 180. I'm probably rating it higher than I should just because I went it with such low expectations, but it really is a pretty great game.

I played Dead Space 3 from start to finish in online co-op with a friend of mine who lives 4 hours away. Is the game as good as Dead Space 2? Absolutely not. But playing it through to the (inconclusive) end with my buddy made it a pretty great experience.

The Last of Us isn't on my list due to technical issues I had with the game. I'm doing some backlog trimming right now so I can see myself coming back to it in the future.

    Euro Truck Simulator 2 (PC)
Batman: Arkham Origins (360, PC, PS3)
    Ittle Dew (Android, iOS, PC)
    Steamworld Dig (3DS, PC)
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (360*, PC, PS3*)
    Sacrilege (PC)

Those are just my top ten, because after spot 10 I just stopped caring. I had agonized enough about my top 10 list.

Turns out, I generally really dig a game if I go around collecting all the bullshit. I got almost all the orbs in SRIV, all the maiamais in Zelda, and all the cheevos for Gunpoint. I got a lot of the Batman Riddler stuff too, but that game wasn't as good to me as the other games on my list.

Once I could see everything released this year it became harder to pick my top 20. I actually played 22 games that were released this year - I have others though I haven't even started like Tales of Xillia (so it missed out). I have been playing a lot of 2012 games actually to my surprise (EG Far Cry 3), mostly due to PSN+ being awesome. Tearaway is still my game of the year for its innovative take on 3D platforming - Just hope there is more of it to look forward to in future. At 21 was XCOM: The Bureau and 22 was Gears of War Judgement.

    My picks, in order:

    Pokémon X and Y (3DS)
Saints Row IV (360, PC, PS3)
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (3DS, WiiU)
    Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS)
    State of Decay (360*, PC)
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan (3DS)
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing (PC, 360)
    Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
    Tomb Raider 2013 (360, PC, PS3)
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (360*, PC, PS3*)
Typing of the Dead: Overkill (PC)

The 3DS kicked ass this year. Bravely Default is getting screwed by our Europe-doesn't-count rule, but it would easily be in my top 10. As for PC games: Saints Row 4 is absolute sex and State of Decay is the closest thing to an awesome zombie survival sim that doesn't involve other people (that are only there to ruin your fun).

All told, I thought this was a pretty lackluster year - there were exactly twenty games on the total list that I even liked

Still, the highs were really high. The top three on my list are just some of my favorite stuff this gen, Lego Marvel was delightful, and Pokemon and Zelda pulled me back in on franchises I'd all but given up on

    Me!

    Top Ten

Mostly a Vita year for me, I don't think the 360 even got turned on this year!

    1) Tearaway (Vita)
    2) The Last Of Us (PS3)
    3) Rayman Legends (Vita)
    4) Dragon's Crown (Vita)
    5) Beyond: Two Souls (PS3)
    6) Guacamelee! (Vita)
    7) Injustice: Gods Among Us (PS3)
    8) Soul Sacrifice (Vita)
    9) The Cave (PS3)
    10) Batman: Arkham Origins - Blackgate (Vita)

Other games I played that I completed/felt should be in there.

    11) Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams - Rise of the Owlverlord (PS3)
    12) Tomb Raider 2013 (PC)
    13) Bioshock Infinite (PC)

    Justification!

I finished Bioshock but really didn't care for it. I enjoyed the plot enough to finish it but the gameplay was tedious, Elizabeth's AI totally overblown (Press X to catch <item>) and the enemies completely unvaried. I did finish it though, so there must have been something there, hence it made the list.

Tomb Raider was similar, the game just didn't gell for me. The acting was awful, the writing dire and I wasn't a fan of the combat (it got better towards the end, when I was upgraded, but by that point I was done with the game). A lot of people said it was an exceptionally polished game, I actually thought it lacked polish. Again I finished it though so it made the list, fairly low down.

Tearaway was, by far and away, the most fun I've had with a video game in years. And the ending was spectacular. My only complaint was it was a little short.

The Last of Us didn't get it's hooks in to me straight away but when it did I stuck with it till the bitter end.

Rayman Legends was brilliant, despite the Vita version suffering from some levels being taken out (I need to check to see if they've been patched back in yet). Truth be told I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Origins.

Dragon's Crown I have put SO much time in to recently, I absolutely love it. Took a bit of a leap of faith when buying it but it's great.

Beyond: Two Souls. I'm a sucker for the crazy nonsense plots that David Cage comes up with, and the cinematic gameplay. It was definitely flawed and I didn't enjoy it as much as Heavy Rain (or even Fahrenheit) but I had a hell of a time with it, and it looked gorgeous.

And the rest were just great games. Yes, even Batman - Blackgate. I've slated it, recommended people don't buy it but deep down I actually really quite enjoyed it.

    Thanks again MCC.

It's a finely crafted little game and it's sitting on my Steam list, but I prefer my rogue-alikes to be about pure strategy (read: turn based). The moment you present the game in real time you lose me.

Blaarg, why is this so hard!? Too many good games. But...

    1. Bioshock Infinite - Close call between this and Tomb Raider. I loved Bioshock's story despite its flaws, but loved Tomb Raider's gameplay. Honestly they're pretty much a tie.
    2. Tomb Raider 2013 - See above.
    3. Europa Universalis IV - III is still my most played game on Steam. If I had CKII and it's expansions on Steam, that might beat it. I'm sure IV will get up there in time.
    4. Gone Home - So. Good. Go play it.
    5. Ni No Kuni - Pacing issues aside, a fantastic RPG with fantastic characters and a wonderful story. Sadly destined to be a cult classic.
    6. Forza Motorsport 5 - Don't listen to the internet, 5 is super fun and the driving is so much better than 4.
    7. Shadowrun Returns - The included story: A++. The MOUNTAIN of community created stuff: Oh god I could play this forever.
    8. Kentucky Route Zero - See Gone Home. Also, only game on this list whose soundtrack I listen to all the time. I want the next episode just for the next Bedquilt Ramblers' song.
    9. Euro Truck Simulator 2 - The fact that this game/internet radio player is so high on so many lists is hysterical and deserved. So zen.
    10. Proteus - Speaking of Zen...
    11. Don't Starve - I just keep coming back to this game. Despite losing often and early. Stupid tree monsters...

1 through 11 are honestly so close I could have put nearly any of these in the 1 spot and been happy.

    Honorable Mentions:
    12. Total War: Rome II - Good fun, but releasing near a Europa Universalis hurts my ability to play with its lacking strategic layer.
    13. Rogue Legacy - Woulda been higher if it wasn't for the unfun bosses.
    14. Peggle 2 - Pegglepegglepegglepeggle *Ode to Joy*
    15. Batman: Arkham Origins - Just finished this, so admittedly that might have pushed it up the list. Still, more Batman is always more Batman.
    16. The Last Of Us - I'm in the "Story was great! Gameplay was the least fun I've had all year!" camp. It only got this high for the story.
    17. Lego Marvel Super Heroes - The perfect pallette cleansing game. Just fun.
    18. Sword of the Stars: The Pit - A nice little rogue-like.
    19. Poker Night 2 - Always funny, even if its legs are a bit short.
    20. Battlefield 4 - This only made the list for the fun it has provided between the massive bug-caused frustration it has also provided.

In my infinite shame, I forgot to put Saint's Row IV on my list...

GTA V ended up sneaking in there right at the buzzer for me(even though, Diablo III console is my true GOTY!). The SP campaign was great with the three playable characters, and the map is huuuuuge and stuffed with ways to cause mayhem. What clinched it, though, was how fun GTA Online ended up being. It's pretty much a second game included with GTA V.

It would also appear that handheld gaming has wormed its way into my heart. Last year I believe I had 0 3DS/Vita games on my list. Now, I have 7 of them on there and half my top ten is handheld games.

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

Paper Sorcerer is missing, otherwise that would be on my list (in the top half) but I guess it's fair to categorise that game as 2014 as it's not due to arrive on Steam until later this month.

Overall, the methodology for this poll is probably the most robust I've seen on any forum due to the way it self-weights and provides both a measure of popularity and quality. I look forward to seeing the results, as this survey usually dictates how I spend a lot of my gaming money when these titles get discounted in the following 12 months or so.

I will just copy a long other thing I wrote for the top 10.
    XVYbnTD.png

    1. Rune Factory 4 ; Rune Factory 4 makes almost no effort to revolutionize the Rune Factory formula (with the lone exception of providing a female protagonist from the outset, which is a significant and welcome change), but personally I don't need it to, and what it does provide is enough substance and polish to make an incredibly satisfying experience. They still need to do a little cleaning up on the crafting, the town building aspect was a touch underwhelming, and not being able to rotate furniture is truly a blow to my heart, but those minor complaints are all I really have for what is otherwise a fantastic game.
The cast is almost universally colorful and endearing (the lone exception being stupid boring Doug and his boring family), there is plenty of dialogue variety both day-to-day and for special events, the request box does a reasonable job of providing short-, mid-, and long-term goals for you to accomplish, farming works, and almost everything feels crisp whether you're casting spells and swinging swords or moving from screen to screen or simply sorting through menus.
Rune Factory has certainly tread this ground before, but I would be completely ecstatic for a sequel to follow in this game's footsteps if it managed the same execution with even just minor advancements. Please : (

    2RlwxvR.png

    2. Fire Emblem: Awakening ; I desperately wish that I could champion Awakening as my full and undisputed favorite game in the series. I am still not sure if it manages to squeak into that position. That there is even a question on this matter (despite the game having the most expansive roster of entertaining and likable characters in the series backed up by a stellar voice casting performance, the most polished presentation, the best support conversations, and excellent music), highlights a number of flaws in the game which I just can't overlook.
Map/scenario design is fairly uninspired, difficulty progression is a bit off balance (especially with the power creep mess that is caused by paralogue recruitment chapters), there is no good difficulty compromise between the quickly easing Hard Mode and oppressively limiting Lunatic Mode, and the overall story is weak (even by Fire Emblem standards) thanks to an incredibly abrupt and underwhelming final arc. (PS the spotpass characters honestly kind of manage to detract from the overall experience. Also there is this hellish curse called Male Morgan inflicted upon me )
None of these elements actually reach the point where I would call them outright bad, and the gameplay side of Awakening easily manages to still be an entertaining experience (the pair up system is a pretty good combat gimmick even with the shortcomings surrounding it and could easily be fleshed out into a great one). But I can't help but hope that the next game will manage to couple the much tighter gameplay of other games in the series with the aspects that Awakening completely aced, and wish that Awakening itself could have done so.

...it is probably my favorite in the series.

    3. Shin Megami Tensei IV ; STM IV is solid, streamlined, and quick. Battles are brisk and fusion is a breeze. I think, of all things, the facet of the game that impressed me most was its incredible reward system and schedule. Practically every fight gives you something to be excited for: level up, newly recruited demons, new fusion possibilities, new demon skills, inherited skills. But even with the flood of rewards it doesn't reach an overwhelming level - each manages to be its own accomplishment, and the addictive thrill of getting the next one never fades through dozens of hours and hundred of battles.

Other assorted thoughts: Ended up liking Isabeau and Walter, wish they would have condensed the app bonus messages when recruiting demons, like 90% of the hats were awful (but playing dressup is always appreciated as long as there are at least some good options), endgame was pretty underwhelming.
    pSzrVgU.png

    4. Pokemon Y ; It's hard to envision myself ever growing tired of the Pokemon formula. Collecting an assortment of cute little floofballs and using them to conquer the world appeals to me at a fundamental level. X/Y for the most part brings refreshing updates for some of the more archaic aspects of the series. X/Y, to my surprise, won best dressup of the year, which obviously scores big points, and the incredible jump in graphical presentation was also a pleasant surprise. Online components continue to plod forward, although the Global Trade System remains a barely functional, barely searchable mess. I also have to assign some negative marks thanks to my reunion with Whimsicott being marred by the lack of engaging postgame content to explore (with no interest in online battles).

    v4vrHdR.png

    5. Ace Attorney 5: Dual Destinies ; Dual Destinies boasts a startlingly good transition to 3d character models, a satisfactory cast of new characters (Athena is great, Blackquill is good, Juniper and Fulbright are fine), and a solid soundtrack. Unfortunately, I feel the meat of the game was merely decent. The story/cases don't really ramp up until the mid point, and don't excel until the final case. Even then, the finale only faintly compares to the likes of the final two cases of Ace Attorney 1 or the final case of AA3. While many of its twists and conclusions were carried out quite well, some of the most vital components simply fell flat. Dual Destinies is a competent, funny, and enjoyable addition to the series (well worth playing), but not quite a truly great one.

    zHxddDz.png

    6. Etrian Odyssey IV ; It's another Etrian Odyssey game.

    2f8nPmI.png

    7. Salty Bet ; I like anime and fighting games and hate Dragon Ball Z. Salty Bet knows what's up. Also Shin Scrub Ken is one of the most sophisticated, realistic, and emotionally moving characters of our generation.

    5uxEE6m.png

    8. Dota 2 ; I'll start by saying Dota 2 is not my preferred game in its genre. While Dota is entertaining in its own right, I lack both the time and conviction to add a second MOBA to the rotation. Despite that, Dota 2 does plenty of things to be respected and even envied. The Compendium was an amazing and well executed idea, alternate announcers and UI skins are a smart way to add to and customize the game experience beyond the in game character cosmetics which have come to be expected, and the community and esports integration within the game client are impressive as well. It says a lot that I will continue to be interested in Dota 2's ongoing development despite having no plans to actually play the game more than a few times per month.

    aWGr51Y.png

    9. Rogue Legacy ; Rogue Legacy made me more closely consider just what it is I find most appealing about the roguelike genre. I love the genuinely unique nature of each run. I love the feeling of being on "The Run." I love the heavy weight on every decision stemming from the very real repercussions for failure. Rogue Legacy is noticeably lacking in these regards. The death of John the Hokage is no tragedy, because Johnette the Hokage is waiting in the wings to run through some more similar rooms, except Johnette will have +2 attack and be able to fly for .5 seconds longer despite having never explored a single part of the castle. Rogue Legacy competently executes on being what it is, with its grindable persistent upgrades and teleportable boss rushes. That game is still a fun experience, just not one I tend to hope for when roguish promises are made.

    1f7LaAl.png

    10. Gone Home ; I'm glad Gone Home exists, I appreciate what it does. I just don't really want to play the whole thing. Some of this is my own fault, as I had to read spoilers (many of them) to convince myself to give it a chance in the first place. Although it doesn't do much for me personally, the amount of effort and attention to detail that went into crafting the nostalgic 90s environment is worthy of praise.

I noticed the Flashback remake wasn't on the list. It wasn't a particularly awesome game, but it was still fun playing my nostalgia trip. Comes with a copy of the 1993 version too. At least it's still a sidescrolling platformer, they didn't try to "modernize" the gameplay to be an FPS or whatever.

And while it doesn't really count, because it's a rerelease, I've been playing the hell out of Knights of the Old Republic on my phone. I still can't believe it. The game is ten years old, but I still distinctly remember my computer struggling to run this game back then.

So we decided on NOT allowing Spelunky this year, right? Cause it might have been way up there if it was allowed.
