GAME had Sonic Rush on sale for £15, and I had £7.50 of reward points on my card because some woman buying a 360 a couple of months ago let me use my card with her purchase. So whee, Sonic Rush for cheap.
I thoroughly enjoyed Sa and Sa3, so I figured this would be worth my money, especially at the price I picked it up for. It's not bad - the switch between the top and bottom screen could've been handled better, but besides this it's a fairly solid platformer. Not sure if I like the new "Rush" meter, though.
I'm enjoying it a lot. I like the rush bar - speed boosting through enemies makes sense, and stops a lot of "insta-kills". I don't understand how you do these "tricks" to fill the bar up though? Or is that not true?
Also when Sonic bops someone he comes out of his spin - this is wrong!

Fuck Blaze though. Jeez.
He stops spinning, but you can still hit other enemies. This is the best way to fill your rush meter, in fact.
And why fuck blaze? She's just another skin for Sonic, except she can hover.
I think you're thinking of Blaze. I just loaded it up, and on the first level of Leaf Storm (the green one, whatever), after the first cliff on the far left there's a spring. With Sonic, there was one time I was able to reach the top ring of that six ring cluster. With Blaze, you shoot up way past it.

No, I'm not. Pressing R will make sonic jump again, with is left hand outstretched.
I still haven't beaten the final boss in this game.
In general, most of the bosses seemed really hard compared to the rest of the game. They were cool to look at, but really frustrating to actually play against.
Unless you're talking about when he dashes sideways, I don't see it. He only does a small little hop upwards. I'm even looking at a few guides and they don't mention a high mid-air jump for sonic; they mention that Blaze's is much higher.

Just watch out for that damn level 6 (I think) the Air Fortress-ish one. It'll make you hate the game.
I'm glad you are enjoying it Lave, but I only thought it was meh.
The way it had been billed up to be a filling sucessor to the Mega Drive games is what ruined it for me. If felt like a really polished fan game to me, the level designs were so dull
Yet you skipped over 2, the best handheld Sonic game ever?
Easily the best portable sonic game. Ever.
It's on par with Sonic 1, 2, 3, & Knuckles. It's that good.
I heard it was basically a handheld port of Sonic 2 (Mega Drive).
I take it I heard wrong?
You heard wrong. They took Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic CD, and Sonic & knuckles, mixed them all together, and made a game. It's like a best-of sonic game.
They took graphics from sonic 1 and sonic 2, the soundtrack from sonic 2, sonic 3, and sonic & knuckles, and the gameplay and level design from Sonic CD and made an original game. There is so much goodness in this game. It's so fucking awesome, one of my favorite sonic games.
Because one picture doesn't do it justice...
It also has the best soundtrack of any non 32X or Sega CD sonic game.
Beyond that, the original Sonic the Hedgehog on the game gear is also criminally underrated.
As for the game not being fast enough... the Neo Geo Pocket hardware had more in common with Sega than with Neo Geo.
It's 16 bit processor, a TLCS900H, is extremely comparable to the M68000 that the genesis had, and it had a Z80 for the sound processor, just like the genesis. And, in an odd turn of events, it had a 6 channel PSG sound chip, just like the Sega Master System had.
it's really odd hearing genesis sonic music being played on essentially a sega master system sound chip, but it sounds cool.
I'm enjoying it a lot. I like the rush bar - speed boosting through enemies makes sense, and stops a lot of "insta-kills". I don't understand how you do these "tricks" to fill the bar up though? Or is that not true?
it's true. it's been a while since i played it, but try pressing B or A when you are in the air, or pressing R when you are on a grind rail.
combos of B and A will get you lots of boost, such as BBA or BBB or whatever. actually, come to think of it, the only stunt button in the air is B, and you can only press A at the end of a combo, i don't know. try experimenting.
Wow. I just presumed every button jumps - and went from there. Only found burst by accident.
Don't hate me TSR but I just want Sonic games - I hate the extended family thats all.
Also Sonic PA looks superb. My all time favourite is StH 1 for the Master System. In fact I've generally found slower Sonic = better Sonic.
Still loving Rush though - it's got a a good vibe to it, and feels a lot more polished.
(Aside: I've just started a "I waste to much time on the interweb thread in H&A" so if that works I will be spending less/no time here in the future. Love you all dearly though (except BladeoftheImmortal - but he's gone now too).

Oh man, I hate you so much.
Sonic 1 and Sonic CD are my favorite games of the series because it's solo sonic. No tails, no knuckles, no super sonic.

Oh yes, the music in Rush is pretty cool. The problem I have with a lot of the Sonic games is the cheesy lyrics they insist on laying over otherwise snazzy music. The soundtrack for Sonic R sounds like a 1990s Eurovision Compilation album - I'm so glad that the PC version lets you choose whether or not you want the lyrics played.
I wish they'd just stopped at Knuckles... really, the 'team' was pretty awesome by that point.
Rush is great - the soundtrack is an essential part of my enjoyment though. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not...
(seriously though, slower Sonic works best. Sonic wasn't really ever about speed... he just... went fast. Sometimes. On loops)
Sonic wasn't about speed...
I'll let someone who's better at rants take care of this.
No there is actual truth about this.
Is was obviously about speed. But it was about earning speed. If you go back and play Sonic on the Megadrive and especially the mastersytem ones are suprisingly slow. And much more enjoyable for it.
To compare in Sonic Advance 1 me and my mate did a hold right run - where you did nothing but that. I made it to stage 2*
* I pressed jump about twice per stage - I also still like the game. A lot.
I can't seem to get past the wind zone, where you're basically on a series of suspended floating ships and you're using those zip lines and bumpers to get from one place to another. If it's not the unfair deaths, it's getting enough lives to get to the boss, or fighting the boss and losing all your lives.
My Sig says I'm still playing it, but really I haven't fired it up in over a month. Having to go back and essentially "grind" the earlier levels to gain more lives is just boring.
I can't believe sonic the hedgehog 3 & Knuckles isn't getting any praise. That game (games?) was fucking epic. Easily my favorite Sonic game ever.
On topic: I have rush, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I never got a chance to appreciate the music though, because I mostly played it at work which meant I couldn't have the sound on, but I think I may go back and re-play it sometime soon. Also, this might just be me, but the dialog in Sonic games is just....painful. All the more reason I love StH3&K, awesome story, easy to follow, amazing gameplay and level design... no craptacular dialog to have to choke down.

Press R mid-air. Sonic has a really, really high double jump. You can get some crazy air with sonic.
And surprisingly enough, it follows Sonic Adventure's storyline. Who'd have thought.
I figured it was going to be a straight Sonic affair, and then Tails, Amy, and the whole crew all make cameos. Just about everyone shy of Shadow.

He's had the move since Sonic Advance 2.

The first time I pressed R+up while jumping I was almost startled.
Probably Blaze is "easy mode", maybe aimed at female gamers (Oooh, Sonic sexism.).
And the last boss is really hard. It probably took me about 100 times.

I could never really get into this game. It just felt too limited by the NGPC hardware. I recall feeling like it wasn't fast enough for a Sonic game.
But clearly my opinion is wrong on this matter, as my Sonic appreciation and knowledge pales in comparison to yours, TSR.

No, I played Sa2, I just didn't enjoy it so much.
Incidentally, it took me about 8 tries to beat the first boss in this game. Tricky bastard, that guy.

Not saying much.

Best 2D platformer ever made, that one.
