Valkyria Chronicles finally downloaded, woop (it has been slowly-but-surely downloading over the last week due to connection being dire recently). Will dive in later to see what all the fuss is about!
You're in for a treat! Just don't give up if you die screaming due to your own incompetence and a freshy introduced gimmick a few times in a row. At the same spot.
Thats XCOM, baby.
I'm hoping being a fan of the original XCOM, even with horrific grenade incidents and Chryssalid-related trauma, I'll be in a good position to face the difficulty I keep hearing about without throwing things through a window.
We shall see, haha.
Any beginner tips I should know about?
Unlike Xcom you'll manually move and aim your troops' shots when you command them. Always go for the critical points (head/tank radiator). Seems obvious but I spent my first few maps aiming for center of mass and alas that damage is pitiful. Going for the head has a much bigger chance of missing but does far more damage when it connects.
Everyone has Overwatch enabled during their enemies' movement phase. If they can see you and you're in range of their weapon, they are going to give you a bad time (except lancers and snipers)--that is until you aim then they kindly stop to let you take your shot.
Performance for a mission is based on turns taken. The less turns, the higher the rank, the more exp and money rewards. Even if you're a perfectionist you should ignore this on your first playthrough. A rank usually requires foreknowledge of a map, overpowered units, and some broken orders (special commands used mainly to boost your troops' stats) which you'll have in your NG+. Skirmish missions will eventually unlock and the game points out it is a great way to grind some exp/money if you feel like you're falling behind.

Just wanted to check in and thank everyone for an awesome Friday Night Gaming session. Chivalry proved to be a glitchy but good time. Do we think we'll still be doing a game this week? I'm guessing we won't have a free weekend of any kind this weekend given it's likely to be a sale.
As a side note - super excited that my son is now pretty darn close to his laptop goal (in other words, close enough that we'll spot him the rest.) This means if Black Friday goes well, my PC is back to being my own and not a Minecraft factory (unless of course I'm playing Minecraft). Also, I'm thinking I'll grab him a wired controller for Christmas to go with it. Other than build quality, is there any major issue compatibility wise between going official Xbox vs. 3rd party?
If you happen to have a PS3, grab a Bluetooth adapter and the SCPDriver. You'll spend $10 instead of $40, and the controller works just fine.
Klyka, I've noticed that you've got Mordheim. What kind of game is it and is it any good?
We don't have one anymore. We're solely PC/WiiU/3DS in terms of current consoles (I have a PSP as well). It was less about the cost and more size. He's 10 and I know he'll want to tote the thing around to friend's houses for Minecrafting so I figured a smaller form factor 3rd party controller might be a better fit for him in terms of portability. I know I'm going to throw some games at his for Christmas that are easier with a gamepad.
Edit: Sorry Klyka - forgot to edit out the @ in that response!
So in the end my father went "screw this" and we called the internet company to do the cable extension themselves even if it was more expensive. Looks ugly as nuts on the wall but we all have wired net now.

So I know that many people around here seem to be into visual novels (or perhaps the fans are just very vocal?) and I thought I'd "boost the signal" as it were for this person and their games, which all seem to be some combo of visual novel plus something. They seem to be stuck in Greenlight areas, probably because of their nichey nicheness. Still it seemed like something the Steam Thread might be interested in.

Anybody know how I link my greenmangaming and playfire accounts? I'm logged into both with the same email and username, but playfire shows that I have credit while GMG does not. Am I missing a "link your accounts" page somewhere?

They are technically the same account, a gmg account is a playfire account and vice versa. Credit can take a bit to transfer over, it's usually not instant. If you just activated your playfire account or it's the first time logging in for some time I think that's normal. If it doesn't show up by tomorrow you can try and contact their support team.
"Seen this one making a few rounds lately, infected a few high profile accounts.
How it works This is how it works. There's a link, that APPEARS to end in ".png", under the pretense of your friend sending you a screenshot. If you click this link, it will download a .scr file, which will hijack your steam account. Your steam account will start to send the same link to your friends.
What to do Don't click links ending "sshot721.png", or any link from "screen-lighting" website. This is the only website they are using at the moment, so it's the one you should definitely not click. They may start using other websites though, so be vigilant.
Turn on Download Notifications in Chrome. Chrome has a feature which will ask you if you want to download a file, before downloading it. By default, this is OFF. You can turn this feature on by going to "Settings", "Advanced Settings", and clicking the checkbox on "Ask where to save each file before downloading." This feature is enabled by default on Firefox.
Ask your friend if they sent that link In a lot of cases, the friends have managed to retain access to the account. Since it is automatic, ask your friend if they sent the link to you. If they say no, then you know they are infected. If they do not answer, presume the same."
I had it happen recently too - from an account I had only befriended doing some TF Keys for games trading. It looked like a screen shot of a proposed trade but then downloaded a scr file. Fortunately it just downloaded to my Downloads folder where I then deleted it, but yeah, it's going around at the moment.
so basic Internet safety rules apply, don't click links that are sent to you with zero context as to what the link is.

Fortunately, I only use Steam for playing collecting games and sending gifts out. Since I don't really IM anyone in Steam nor receive messages, everything I do receive is suspicious and\or malicious. Thanks for the heads up!

Wait. What game is this?
I think Jragghen is referring to Everlasting Summer. There are actually at least two "free to play" visual novels on Steam, the other being Narcissu.
Don't think of them as "free to play" in the typical sense of the word in modern gaming. They're just games that are free. No scammy stuff or paywalled contact AFAIK. Everlasting Summer in particular was released for free from the developer previously, and I guess Steam is OK with some completely free games being on their service.
Did everyone see this EVE trailer, with voice comms recorded by players in-game? I'll still not play it (although I admit to firing up a trial once), for many reasons, but I've always enjoyed hearing the stories that come out of it. And this trailer is utterly inspired. One of the best I've ever seen, I think.
Just in case, I'm posting the censored "clean" version. The proper version is NSFW for language; just hit up Youtube for "This is EVE".
Also, I'm thinking I'll grab him a wired controller for Christmas to go with it. Other than build quality, is there any major issue compatibility wise between going official Xbox vs. 3rd party?
I don't know the price of the 3rd party controllers you were thinking of, but I remember seeing an official Xbox controller for like 30$ on Amazon last week. Might be worth checking it out.
On topic now, I've been out of the PC game for a while, since my PC broke a year ago. I'm pretty sure I missed some nice Steam games since then, so if you guys have any suggestions of games I should be checking out during the Winter Sale, that would be appreciated. I won't have a huge budget for games since my daughter should be born on Dec. 19th, so any games that you think might be pretty cheap will go on my Steam Wishlist.
Thanks guys!
I'm on my phone and can't find it, but can someone link this good man to Drake's curator list. (I'm assuming he has one.)

Wait. What game is this?
Mentioned it on another forum, turns out it's apparently a horribly translated porn game. Not gonna link it, sorry.
Just because a game is horribly translated is no good reason to withhold sharing it!
It's also not a "porn" game. Yes, it has a few nude/sex scenes (and only if you activate adult content in the options) but it's not a porn/sex/hentai/etc visual novel. I'd say the Witcher games have much naughtier scenes and no one calls them porn games.

And when base building, you need more satellites. I don't care how many you have now, you need more.

Now to download Final Fantasy XIII!
Great stuff, thanks! Here I go...
I'm dumb and gave you XCOM advice when you were asking for Valkyria Chronicles advice. Ignore me, satellites won't help you in VC.
