Yeah we were asked by Reed and PA one year to remove them, but that need went away. Probably a good idea to not show your number though. Not a BIG deal, but they are unique.

Well it is a min of 1k but, people might have a hard time getting a few to have as trades to bring to east.
With the number of people that go through the line normally to play magic to get the pins, I would guess that they have 2-3K at a minimum…but that is just a guess. I know that at Aus they had us play 3/5 different types of games, very similar to Next Level, and it was a bit time consuming. I doubt it will be rare/hard to get though.

I'm going to go on record right now and predict that this guy is wrong. There is no way that I can see them making something like that. They wouldn't have enough people/time in the day to even give out 500 pins by the end of pax. So I am going to guess that the guy on Reddit is incorrect that is how you get the tickets. That would be about 10X worse then Leeroy in my opinion. Ugh

I wonder if they give the tickets to you when you pay for the tournament. If so, you could just trade the tickets for the pin later on and not even play any Magic.
From past experiences on how MTG events run. You'll get your MTG product and prize tix upon tournament registration/start.
Here is the description of the event from PAX Prime 2014.
Hunt for Garruk: Players will play with intro decks right out of the box in event pods of 8 players in 3, 20 minute games. Players with a record of 3 wins, 0 losses will receive 4 Born of the Gods booster packs and a deck box. Players with a record of 2 wins, 1 loss will receive 2 Born of the Gods booster packs. Every player will receive 1 Born of the Gods Booster Pack. Event Runs Friday & Saturday @ 11:30, 1:00pm and Sunday @ 11:30 & 2:30pm.
The events should be new player friendly and if you win, you get more tix/prizes. You're welcome to drop from the tournament although that means your opponent will get a free bye round.
I'm really hoping they end up giving out some pins for playing their iPad game, but so far the Magic announcement makes it clear that you have to play (aka pay) tournaments to get tickets. Amount varies as does the number of tickets.
I hope they do give the tickets up front. I'd rather just straight pay them for the pin then go the tournament route.

With that said, I enjoy magic…even though I never get to play it. So I will probably play a round or two depending how many tickets you get for winning rounds.
I HATE CCGs/TCGs. Absolutely hate them. RNG and I do not have a healthy relationship, and I don't like the concept of "well as soon as you increase n > 1000, then it should even out!" Hearthstone also hates me. That being said, I love the art style of MtG, as well as how all of their pins look. Here's hoping I can trade someone for this pin at South and not have to go through the torture of getting stomped in a mini-TCG tourney.

that would really be a bummer if its that intricate (pay, enter tournament, etc). I much, much prefer either the "wait in line, guaranteed to get it", or "pay, get it" approach

I think the prize wall and pin distribution are unrelated, going off of previous wotc pax events. But we'll see.
