If you knew what it was you got a thrill of recognition, if not then you thought it was an alien from Alpha Centauri making contact with the Ice Warriors, proving the Doctor's point and moving the story along a bit. This way you get the call from another star, which the story needs, and the tie-in to the Curse of Peladon, which is elegant callback.

We've been recording the new series of Doctor Who but haven't yet started to watch it... which makes it pretty annoying that our digital TV provider had a glitch where all series recordings from mid-April to mid-May were suddenly gone, including the first four episodes of the series.

What promotes this from annoying to infuriating is that when I called the support line, they tried to suggest that it may have been our mistake. There's no function available to end users to delete all recordings during a certain period, so we would've had to sit down and delete a few dozen episodes of series we're recording manually, one at a time. Our mistake, suuuure.

This tangential post was brought to you by Thirtih being pissed off at Swisscom.

I mean, if I understand your opinion, you're saying that the best kind of fan service is sex appeal? That seems a bit off, especially considering the type of show that Doctor Who is. Which is, of course, my opinion. No one said you can't have an opinion.

Ugh, commenting on someone's else's opinion or statement is in no way equivalent to suggesting that the original opinion holder shouldn't have opinions.

    This is basic stuff, people.

Your right to your own opinion does not extend to protecting that opinion from criticism, or you from the opinions of others.

I also took it as 'the best kind of fan service is sex appeal specifically for people attracted to women'. There's an underlying assumption about Doctor Who fans there.

Doctor Who has played the "Pretty Girl" companion angle many times over.

When New Who started, it followed that exact formula.

That felt a bit better paced than last week, and although I didn't like all the young actors performances it was pretty good.

I was super relieved that it was a good episode, because Survival was one of my favourites from the classic series and I was worried that might've just been a one-off.

Has there ever been another companion who was scorned in the media for being to hot? I know Amy Pond got that when she debuted.

Well, clearly the Doctor was wrong or plot hole:
If they eat all light, and die without light and are trapped with no light...problem solved.

So I am sure the merry band just mopped up.

I thought the Doctors inability to close the portal using the tardis seemed a bit off. Guy generally just has to flip a switch to do something like that.

    Did anyone else think
he was using blatant reverse psychology to get the Romans and Picts to team up so he wouldn't have to defend the portal? And how did Bill not see that?

I dunno if "he didn't solve the problem instantly" feels like a compelling criticism. Not all portals are alike, presumably.

That is what I thought he was doing, but his dialogue afterwards suggests otherwise.

Maybe. But this is the same incarnation that punched through a mountain of diamond, so maybe he was really ready to do it.

That was the weird part, did the writers change their mind later on or something? Moffatt shouldn't have missed the implications.

I expect those of you who also listen to the Big Finish audio books already know about this (and perhaps it's even been mentioned in the thread and I missed it), but Derek Jacobi will be reprising his role as the Master in a number of audio episodes:

When Moffat writes a good one, he really writes a good one. Wow.
I twigged Simm partway through but only because the internet had me half looking for him. It was something he said. I can't remember what but my brain instantly just immediately went oh, that's Sam Tyler.

I didn't realize it was simms in a mask until the reveal, but I did suspect that it was the master about midway through. Only because I knew we were dealing with multiple Masters, though.

I totally called it was Simm from the start. I could just tell it was him trying to disguise his voice under the mask, plus the unique way that he moves when he's acting. And for some reason 'Razor' reminded me of Saxon.

Only seen the opening scene so far, but hot damn that cold open...
gotta grudgingly admit that some of the impact was lost since we saw a fake regeneration only a few episodes ago, and Capaldi's acting in that fakeout was so wonderful, but there was still something new here. Not melancholy, not begging for more life,
but fucking furious that he's dying...

So I wonder if maybe he's been dying for a while, and holding it off like Ten? Missy asked if there was something wrong with him a few episodes back, perhaps he's been staving off a regeneration for some time, and occasionally has to vent energy? Would ameliorate him blowing some off as a joke in Lie of the Land if it's something he has to do regularly? ;P

    Oh brilliant
