    Just thought I'd mention:

Flaming Cliffs 3 is on the current Steam flash sale. For the next 12 hours (well, 11.5 at this current time), FC3 is 75% off (price: $10)

Welp, missed it. I might pick it up at 60% off anyway, we'll see.

And DCS World has ruined Elite:Dangerous for me. I hope you're all happy :P.

So I learned tonight that when you're in a steep dive to get away from an unexpected missile launch is not the time to be fumbling to emergency drop A-G stores and go in to cat 1. I survived, but the ground was coming up awful fast until I get the jet in to cat 1 and she actually started to rotate. My escort failed me and let some Mig-29's get right on top of my SEAD flight.

I might have just ordered some Thrustmaster MFDs...

Maybe. It's possible. And I might also at some point be putting Lilliput 8" USB displays behind them to export my MFD's from BMS and A-10C.

I'm a software engineer who's single and surprisingly smart with his money (despite appearances to the contrary in this thread and the computer parts thread), so I have plenty of "play money" to spend on things like this.

I just picked up IL-2, and got the 7.03 FX mod. Any other must-have mod? I'm mostly concerned about graphics and sound and controller interaction as I don't need any additional content. I'm sure I'll never see 5% of what the core game has to offer.

I have TrackIR, too, but I'm assuming support is pretty good out of the box.

You should download DCS World off of Steam. It comes with a few free modules, including a TF-51D trainer that's the same as the Mustang Study Module except unarmed. It is a freaking joy to fly that plane. When Edge finally comes out this will probably start competing with my Elite time again. But yeah this plane is free with DCS World. Check out this video from JiveDilettante from ShackTac.

Heh yeah. His flying is dreamy, I can watch it all day. His helicopter vids are really good too. I really need to nail down a decent headtracking solution so I can get back to my Huey.

That said the TF-51D is a very fun plane to fly. With proper trim the nap of earth flying they were performing is not as hard as you'd think. Trim your plane to pitch up at neutral stick and you are mostly there. After that it's all about keeping your energy up and staying in control, which is not hard to do at all in a plane like the Mustang. If you pancake trying to barnstorm a bridge it's like whatever. You don't have to tell anyone.

TrackIR doesn't work for helicopter flying? Or you just don't want to spend the money on TIR?

I could tell he was an actual pilot the moment visibility started dropping :)

I think I already bounced off the old IL-2. Graphics are just too dated for me. Played for a bit. It's pretty tough to unlearn my E:D binding of twist to roll rather than yaw. But it's either that or never be able to fly an actual plane again, because that habit would straight up kill me.

It's just a bit pricey for my budget when there are other solutions available. I'm looking into fabbing my own IR LED arm. Then with one of the open headtracking solutions and my webcam I'll be able to rig up something decent.

Just flew my first serious multi-player flight in BMS, with an actual flight lead who knew what he was doing and had the full brevity vocabulary. Was a ton of fun, but super intense. So much to pay attention to, all your sensors, the battle situation, and trying to be on your leaders wing.

I think it's just a natural state of mind when you care about what you're doing and want to be good at it. I think it's a healthy nervousness and intimidation if you harness it correctly, can really open up your mind to learning if you don't let the nerves overwhelm you. If you do fuck up, just recognize it and own it. So far I've found these guys don't mind beginners, they mind beginners that display Dunning-Kruger. I think if I keep it humble and am always willing to listen and learn, I'll be fine.

Lost situational awareness after pickling off a HARM and having to go defensive on an SA-3 launch. Flight lead ordered me to flow west, and I flowed north, back in to the FLOT, he was not happy. We got it sorted out though, and once I sort of owned the mistake he was good. No, it did not get anyone killed. Our second element got killed, but by SA-11's no one saw, had nothing to do with my fuck up.

So this is the next thing I'm saving my pennies for, after I get a pair of Lilliput screens to put behind my shiny new MFD's:

Okay, I flew the Mustang for a while. I can't do a coordinated turn to save my life without actual rudder peddles, and an uncoordinated turn (such as needed to flip this puppy on its side without actual changing my heading)....forget about it. I will also be obviously unable to land in a crosswind until my brain learns this coordination.

Question: by default, is mixture and propeller pitch handled for me, and I just handle the throttle? It seemed to me it was, but based on my inability to the point the aircraft straight up for even a short period of time after building up airspeed, I feel something must be wrong. I've pointed a Cessna 150 straight up in real life, so obviously something is wrong.

You have full control over the propeller, throttle and engine mixture. The assembly is on the left side of the cockpit. The propeller control lever has a black knob and is marked with a P. Setting it forward increases RPM. Keep the RPM around 2400 for cruise, and you want full 3000 RPM for take off and full military power. The Mixture Control is a red knobbed lever with an M and four settings, Idle Cut, Auto Lean, Auto Rich and Full Rich.

By default, huh? Yeah, I was probably significantly underutilizing the plane's power. Not to mention I never got it trimmed properly.

I love how a plane built in the 40's has a more sophisticated mixture control system than the planes I flew. Sounds like I can bind that to a 4-way hat.

Is binding throttle to my main throttle, and binding prop control to my joystick's tiny throttle a sensible solution? I've actually only ever flown a plane with separate prop control once and I was not the PIC for real.

I'm in joystick hell. So I broke my Warthog trying to grease it, fine, I take the responsbility, ordered a replacement (just the stick). I'll try and get Thrustmaster to fix mine, but since I've opened it I'm not expecting much. Replacement gets here today. All the mounting posts for the bottom plate have come out of their welded holes. No way to get the stick to firmly sit on it's base. Must have gotten damaged in shipping, or just a manufacturing defect *sigh*.

Thankfully Amazon is cross shipping me a replacement, but it will get here Saturday...the 4th of July, so you know more than likely Monday.

Just had my best session of multiplayer BMS yet. It's really starting to come together for me. We ran a three ship package, me and the flight lead were strapped down with GBU's and JDAM's and our third was pure air to air as escort. Incoming to the target we had some radar contacts, but nothing major. We put our bombs dead spot on, perfect ripples, took out the entire base. On our way back, we engaged a two ship of Mig29s, wiped them out of the sky. Then some Mig19s wanted to play, and three slammers later the fourth in their four ship was running for his life. As we turned for home, we got a lone Mig19 contact who thought he was going to sneak up on my beam and fire, but too bad for him we saw him. He turned to run but I plugged in the burner, went supersonic and shoved a slammer right up his butt. Lofted it at RTR and pitbulled about three seconds later. Fireball baby.

I'm really starting to get a feel for air to air combat, especially against other deadly BVR targets like the Mig29s with AA-12 Adders (Adders are scary as fuck, no joke). Basically the Mig29 can fire the Adder when you're still outside RMax, but it has a terrible seeker head, he has to keep lock for a very long time. So basically you turn in to the 29 and start gentle lazy turns back and forth, keeping the 29 on your radar gimbles. Once you're inside RMax, you pickle your shot as you're sweeping the gimbles, then put him in the notch until your missile goes pitbull. Then immediately beam him and smash the throttle to the firewalls and drag the missile away, keeping up your lazy turns to bleed energy from the missile. Your missile tracks so much better that you run his missile out of energy while yours is still hammering at him. Nothing like knowing an Adder is in the air but getting a non-circled M on your radar (meaning it's lost track and is going ballistic, you've defeated it).
