Are the sides of you that we see here on the forums as close to your real life selves as it gets, or is it at times just a persona that you put on while doing your work?
I tend to be very quiet around people I don't know very well and become increasingly more obnoxious as I get to know them better. Which is basically my persona here.

Ceres can attest to this, as at PAX she had like a 45 minute conversation with Moe and I kinda stood there and said nothing. Then we hop in the car with my non-forum friends and I don't shut up.

Truth be told, my social life right now is basically "the internet" on account of friends moving farther away and doing radical things like having kids. By next PAX I'll probably only know how to communicate via memes and Simpsons quotes.

I have to ask, have I ever been reported for anything? I don't think I've done anything to warrant it, and I've never been warned, but... is there any behavior I should be worried about?

I can take my answer in PM's if the truth would hurt too much.

If the number of threads in your profile is greater than the number of threads you have made, then yes probably.

I once asked about that and was told a thread is created when you're reported for something.

It has been changed so now the thread is created by the reporter, presumably so that people can't watch their own thread count for when someone else reports them.

This is pretty much also me in a nutshell.

Though I am still mentally on a knife edge most of the time I am around anyone but my closest friends, no matter how much I've got to know them.

For me it's a little bit of both depending on the mood. I definitely have a forum persona I pull out at times.

Something I mentioned in D&D chat a while back: it's kind of funny how I don't want to use my real name on the forums, yet it's very easy to find me on Twitter and I link my blahg in my sig.

I just want to keep my forum persona separated from my other social outlets, even if my forum persona nowadays is pretty much just regular old me.

A bit of both. My opinion on this is that there is no "real self", everyone acts according to the situation that they're in. People act differently with their friends, their lover, their work colleagues and all of those are the "real" person. I'm only consciously putting on a persona about ten percent of the time, but I'm frequently in social situations here (eg, acting as an authority figure) that I'm not going to face in a real life situation.

What is the decision-making process for whether or not a thread goes past 100 pages? I notice sometimes mods will comment on something on page 109 or whatever but leave the thread open. Sometimes this even takes place in recurring threads, I've noticed it isn't limited to one-off threads such as this one. Is it as simple as a part of the conversation needing to reach a conclusion before a new thread starts, or perhaps even simpler, the moderation staff not noticing the thread is past its expiration?

Threads should always be locked at 100, if one hasn't been it is because the moderators are being insufficiently whipped.

Would you personally prefer people stop posting in a thread once it reaches 100 pages or does it not matter to you either way as long as the thread is still unlocked?

I do wonder when threads spill over into the 101 to 105 range of pages why they have not been locked
I just thought it was a off time for a mod
But can you get Geth to lock them or is he only available at the mods beck and call?

I guess theoretically it's better if people stop posting, but it's not a huge deal. As long as people aren't deliberately posting as much shit as they can to inflate the page count, which back in the day might have actually been a problem.

We could get Geth to lock them I think, but that function isn't often used. It's mainly for the D&D chat thread at this point.

There was the time of the Awesome Posts forum, which, in its final iteration, would spawn a thread belonging to the person being reported.

Originally the person reporting the post would have the thread in their name, but that was changed after a while.

This predated the notification system, so if you weren't paying much attention you could have had a bunch of threads in there and have no idea they existed.

Being reported a lot doesn't mean anything and asking if you've been reported a lot is not a question with a fruitful answer. Like in heated political threads a report can be translated to "This person said something I disagree with." and is nothing actionable. If you are worried about your behavior then infractions and verbal warnings are a far better metric than reports.

Remember: reports are requests to look into something, not demands for action.

This is literally the best community I've found on the internet. I don't remember how I found this place, but once I lurked for a while I knew I had found a place that was more well-reasoned and fostered intelligent/fun/meaningful conversation than any place I had previously read on the internet. Huge thanks to the mod staff and everyone who contributes so awesomely here.

That being said, its not like I go around checking out other forums regularly.

What other online forum/communities have you learned from and which ones of those (if any) do you feel are better, in some or any way, than PA?

I took a certain amount of inspiration from a speech by Lowtax at a university some years ago. It caused me to appreciate the "why would we let you do that?" school of community management, rather running the place as though it was a senate. Otherwise, I don't tend to look to outside communities much. I see things I don't want to do more than things I do.

    Sure.

There was a time when the focus of community policy was "why wouldn't we?". On SA for instance, people agitated for porn and MP3 forums, and were given them. The sense was "you owe the community something, you should give them what they demand or they'll get mad". The mental switch to "Why would we do that" is an important burden shift. Here it was often related to insults. "Why shouldn't I get to call everyone an ass licking shitlord?". When you start to ask "why would we let you do that" rather than "why wouldn't we", a lot of your policy decisions change.

It's worth pointing out that people will get incredibly angry when you directly ask them "what do we owe you?". The fact that the question can't be answered in any way that allows them to continue being angry and shitty towards you just makes them more angry.
