That review of Xenoblade X is interesting but I think they are remembering the original game with some seriously rose tinted glasses.

Calling it a game about accessibility is actually laughable. I love the game but it is a jrpg ass jrpg. It has just as many systems as X and they're even less polished so are more frustrating to deal with.

The only thing I'll say is you can pretty easily ignore a lot of those systems and beat the game.largely fine.

Also, you're still fighting crabs at level 70. You're just fighting level 70 crabs.

The weakness of X over the original are in the quality of world building (still real real real good in X ), the story and the characters. And all of those are fine.

Nah, X is worlds behind XC was in control and gameplay refinements. It's a very frustrating step backwards.

It was pretty ridiculous to have your silent protagonist "cry out in pain" when they lost their arm. That almost ruined the moment for me.
They aren't actually silent though? I mean, you pick a voice actor and your character regularly says stuff during and after battle. Mine seems obsessed with her hair for some reason; luckily Elma is always ready with some clutch hair care tips.

I hate that damn "these prairie winds are rough on my hair" crap. My lady is a bad ass. She does not care about her dang hair.

I loved Lao's response to that line: "So cut it off. This is no place to worry about your hair."

My character has curls though; I could see that being kind of annoying. Actually, wouldn't tight curls be easier to maintain in strong winds than long straight hair? Fuck if I know, I have generic white guy hair that does whatever. Either way I like the hair line because it gives her a bit of a sarcastic personality. Like, fighting giant monsters? Easy. Finding your favorite conditioner while stranded on an alien planet, that's the real struggle!

Also, I'm not positive on this but I don't think I've heard that line since I started wearing a helmet? Might just be confirmation bias though; I've heard that line so much that I wouldn't be surprised if I'm just mentally skipping over it.

I'm going to be playing Final Fantasy 13 for the first time soon. Is there anything I should keep in mind before I start, like important things I can miss or screw up or anything?

Don't sell anything if you intend to trophy max. Nothing is totally missable from loot, but if you sell stuff you can't get it back.

That's definitely good to know ahead of time, thanks.

Specifically, it's weapons and accessories you don't want to sell. Materials like credit chits are made for selling, definitely cash those in.

Okay, that'll be easier than not selling anything at all.
Don't put too much thought into FF13 battles until you actually start gaining abilities.

Yeah, I haven't played much yet, but that's definitely how it seems so far.

I super don't agree. That it has an onscreen indicator of where you are facing on the enemy, as well as now holding your position when you press the attack button regardless of where the enemy faces during the animation are tremendously huge improvement.

Combat in general flows so much better and smoother than it did in the original.

I also think the raw movement is way more fun. It is do god damn much fun to run and jump 30 feet into the air. I regret a little bit how much skells completely replace that.

Questing is also a lot more certain and less guessworky.

Not being able to control aggro in XenoX outside of taunting is a bad design decision

Aggro was so poorly tuned in XC. Made playing primarily as a backstabber an absolute nightmare. This has been a non issue for me in X because I can just snapshot my backstab, since enemies take a second or two to turn around even when you have their agro.

The much more polished and advanced positioning has made the game so much infinitely more fun for me to play.

The targeting system is awful though.

Combat is mostly fine except for the stuff they never bother explaining. I'm still not sure what combos and auras are for example. And most of the arts you get in classes don't really go together at all unlike in XC which built off each other much more easily and made much more sense. I could easily make builds in XC, I don't even bother to try anymore in XX.

Most of the stuff I'm talking about tho is the rest of the game. Having to search out party members, having to search out time pass spots, the borderline randomness of the map icons, quests having location marks sometimes and sometimes not, the wonky inside - outside camera. I mean I could name a ton more that are just messy jerky design decisions that XC didn't have.

I don't think XC ever explains auras either, the only difference being Shulk never learns any so if you only played as him you didn't have to worry about them.

The first Xenoblade needs a Wii U/NX port.

I simply can't play it with the Wiimote nor deal with the quality of the N3DS version.

You literally can't play it with the Wiimote, no. You gotta use the classic controller.

Oh. Well that shows how little I know of the Wii version.

But seeing as I have no clue where my Classic Controller is, I don't see being able to play a 70 hour jurp with Wiimote and Nunchuck.

Huh, I though you had to have a classic controller for it. I'd say for all practical purposes you still do because the wiimote+nunchuck setup seems like a horror show. And I'm normally pretty on-board with Wii motion controls.

I used a Wiimote + nunchuck as well and thought the controls were fine at the time. Thinking back on it now though I have no idea how the camera worked? I remember the camera controls took a little bit to get used to but I can't actually remember what was strange about it.

I started Chapter 7 at 29 and really close to leveling

Got past a boss fight and that leveled me

Went and bought the Mastema, which comes with a 50 fuel weapon on its right shoulder that hits enemies for as much as 36k per shot and that's no bullshit. Long cooldown but if you go into cockpit mode the enemy is basically toast

Ground against... maybe 6 of the big evil Pokemon Bug/Dark monsters on the King's... falls? In Oblivia. They were level 42. They did not stand a chance.

Lin ended up getting my level 20 skell destroyed but by the time this became an issue she, Elma, and the Murderess had all hit level 30

I am suddenly in a situation where I went from having about 2 million credits and nothing to spend it on to not nearly having enough for how I want to outfit my crew. I need to pick and choose my favorites for now and save up for the others, and also set up a money-making chain of probes so I can afford heavy frames for everyone

    Edit:

Also this game has dropped some heavy hints with regards to what may end up being a strange bit of plot

So is there skeevy stuff in XCX? I know there was that thing about a character's outfit updated for the western release, but does it have unfortunate scenes and such?

Basically - any trigger warnings for someone sensitive to that sort of thing?

May be missing the mark on your question here because I'm not completely sure what you mean, so if I get this wrong please forgive me:

I'm currently in Chapter 7, which is a little over halfway into the story, and so far there hasn't been any weird sex stuff that I've run across. There's a female villain wearing a space thong (because of course there is) and the game still has a weird gender divide when it comes to how many outfits are displayed, but the question of sex in this universe so far has been handled as kind of a distant thing, another component of life that's affected by the circumstances of characters.

Nobody acts creepy toward Lin in-game, Lin hasn't acted creepily toward anyone so far, all the characters are focused completely on things that aren't sex. There's not a Ringabel to be found in the whole cast, as far as I can tell.

I don't know because I'm only halfway in, and also I'm not an authority on what counts as triggering versus not, but so far the game has not offended in that way

There's the one gay guy who set off some alarm bells by being stereotypically effeminate but then everyone treats him with proper respect as a member of the crew (unless there are any later missions or I skipped over some bad dialogue)

it feels like something that localization made better with what they had but it's hurt by him being the only gay character

(I am also around chapter 7)

Lara Mara and Lara Nara (I am almost positive they're two different guys, unrelated, but I'd need to check the chart) are pretty aggressive effeminate gay stereotypes, yeah

The translation plays them as pretty much pure camp self-assurance

That is somewhat helped by the fact that Lara Nara (at least) is a super competent commander who leads internal criminal investigations and is respected enormously by all of his coworkers

It's not known if anybody in the game is gay or not, because for the majority of characters their sexuality just never comes up, but man Lara is loud and being uncomfortable with how loud he/they is/are makes perfect sense
