We haven't heard about her grandfather before now. I believe the big deal is that Claire thought she had no family left. She was raised by her grandmother alone, who is now dead, and this is the first she's heard of her grandfather as far as the comic goes.

I think upper classman is still drawn as swole as he was before, but there's an effect where we determine 'masculinity' by the ratio of head width to total shoulder width, and he's got a slightly more normal ratio there, which I think is causing some dissonance.
