This'll probably be the last big reminder before tomorrow unless I toss up a small timer picture before I sleep.
*Actual total $885. A little over 40% of my goal of $2000, before I even started streaming, which is amazing.
Just wanted to send a huge thanks to everyone who's donated so far, more than half of the donations are from Steam thread members so thank you, thank you, thank you. I love when Steam thread comes together in a big way for charities, and ones like Extra-Life and Child's Play are part of my favorite cause to participate in. Anything to help out sick kids is a good thing, and it really means a lot to see so much from this community. Like, the random gift bombing to each other is sweet, and it's nice to give to others, but to see us all come together to give to those in really tough times or help out the little gamers to be is truly, truly heartwarming.
I went shopping for snacks today to prepare so that I wouldn't have to raid my family's closet for food. I may have gone a little overboard, but I am very much ready to go.
As part of the last update before the event, quick reminder that donations will be accepted into late November. However, be sure to donate before Monday, October 26th to be included in the two raffles. The first raffle is the $60 in Steam monies, where you get one entry per each $5 donated. The second raffle is for a Steam code for Fallout 4 from GMG, where each person who donates will be entered to win. The Fallout 4 one was created specifically for you guys since it was the highest wanted game on my friends list last weekend.
If you can't donate, you can also help by just stopping by the channel and saying "Hey" or keeping me awake if you see me dozing off at 5-6am. Thanks again for all the help, Steam thread!

I actually kind of like QTEs for boss battles, provided they aren't awfully telegraphed and esoteric. Which some totally are.
I think what I prefer though are the "get it down to enough health, then brutalize it with or without QTE" option that games like God of War, Darksiders, Lords of Shadow, and a few others seem to readily use well.
I make art things! deviantART:Kalnaur ::: Origin: Kalnaur ::: UPlay: Kalnaur
Well, that's exactly where QTEs came from. People complained that control of their character was taken away and they want to finish off the bad guy.
Soon the backlash against boss QTEs will lead to games not using them at all, at which point that original complaint will rise yet again.
And so the circle of life continues.
I feel like QTEs are like the escort mission in that nobody knows how they got here, and nobody will complain if they all disappeared (except maybe game devs who need to now figure out a different thing to stuff in their game)
QTEs in the modern sense got here thanks to three games, primarily: Shenmue coined the term and was the first usage in modern gaming, and Resident Evil 4 and God of War both came out in 2005 and were huge, splashy, great games which used the QTEs fluidly in cutscenes/boss battles in a way that was super novel at the time. Once everyone started doing it, it stopped being awesome.
Like, that first boss battle in God of War, which was basically a giant QTE? Amazing. Resident Evil 4's QTEs during battles and cutscenes ("just beat del lago, I can set down my controlle...SHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHIT") were super great at the time. The problem is that EVERYONE started doing it then, and it lost its luster.
Basically, it's one of a line of many things which were great when the first game did it, and then have become super tiresome - cover shooting, rechargable health, etc.
It's the ones which AREN'T picked up by others which remain impressive, which is why Alpha Protocol and Bulletstorm are still lots of fun to go back to.
Looks like Activision is putting up some of their older licensed titles onto Steam after they renegotiated with Marvel.
That is Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions, which released a bit before the whole "every game comes to Steam" trend.
So that means we might see a few of the other older Spider-man titles, and maybe other Marvel stuff like Wolverine game that was way better than it had any right to be, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, etc.
Wolverine was really good fun, there was nothing original about it at all but it didn't matter because Wolverine
I've never played any of the earlier Spider-Man games on PC but I haven't heard great things about the PC ports, they were great on PS2
X-men legends 1 & 2 would be great to see, I have 2 on disc somewhere but I don't think 1 got a PC release? I'm sure they would make plenty of money releasing the Tony Hawk games on Steam

I don't think they'll go very far back. It'll likely be like their Unreal Engine 3 games since those are easy to work with and don't require much to meet expected standards these days.
A lot of the Disney games that came recently are from that point in time as well.

thats so close to 1000, i wish i had more to dontate to help make that happen. also, i feel like i probably am the only one that had this issue, but since it is for charity and official it required my human name and then there was a drop down option of if i wanted it public or private or annonymous and then there was like a check box and i got confused, so if im listed in there i dont need to be in the drawing. hope you make that goal
Kingdom is a game about being a King (or Queen) and the power of money. It's essentially a light strategy game. During the day you go around instructing your builders what to construct, riding off into the woods to find bandits to recruit into good, honest men and overseeing production of the tools your subjects use, bows for hunting and defense, hammers for construction and repairs and scythes for farming fat stacks of cash. During the night it goes all mine craft and you have to survive the endless hordes of pests knocking at your walls. If they knock your crown into the river it's game over.
The neat thing about it is mostly the minimalistic level of control you have over your kingdom. As lord or lady you only have the most traditional of super powers: Tax Money taken from your subjects by simply riding past them after they've done an activity which generates wealth like hunting or farming. Any action you perform costs money and requires you to be there for it. Want a new villager? Ride over to the wild camps and drop some cash on the ground to convince people. Need new walls? Put some cash on this lump of dirt. Bigger castle? Better splash all your cash out your coin purse. The simple nature really plays into the biggest hook this game has: The curiousity you get while playing it. Along with more standard strategy decisions your first few games will be plagued with indecision and doubt mixed in with the desire to put money into strange, foreign objects just to see what will happen when you do so. Similar to stepping out of the Undead Asylum for the first time in Dark Souls the game promises to kill you repeatedly while you learn these tools and what they do.
The game's also really, really pretty. The pixel art isn't astounding in some places (your horse's face is a particular sore spot) but it hits more often than it misses and the game makes fantastic use of more modern effects to look fantastic. From stellar lighting at night to moody fog as the day drudges on there's alot of atmosphere squeezed into the game.
My main worry however is that I doubt it's built to last. There's only so many tools in the world and the game's structure is rather rote with a big knock out wave coming every five days. It may very well be falling into the trap of many single player strategy games where it's more a puzzle than strategy game ultimately. One where inconsistent villager AI can kill you as often as the monsters.
However at the end of the day for £7 it's a damn engaging puzzle with alot to recommend for people who like exploring interesting takes on strategy mechanics. Even if it doesn't always hit the mark.
This close to Halloween the avatar allows us brief visits back to the land of the living.
After I picked up a new powersupply there was an incident involving a spraying cat we were watching for a neighbor then our car transmission went out. Bunch of other crazy stuff the past year. When it rains it pours.
Missed you guys and gals.

Hrm. Steam says I own the Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition, but it also says I do not own Dead Money or Honest Hearts, two of the DLCs. But the Ultimate Edition claims to have those. What?
The money coming in for the Friday the 13th Kickstarter slowed to a crawl after the first two days. Maybe there's not a big market for the Friday the 13th franchise in general anymore, let alone as it pertains to a video game. I feel like a lot of my interest was admittedly based on nostalgia & rose-colored glasses.
Kind of bums me out a little.

It made more than half in the first couple days. It's almost guaranteed to exceed the goal when the campaign ends.
The usual pattern of kickstarters is a big beginning push, a lull in the middle, and then a big surge at the end. It'll be fine.

New vegas was from a time when they were starting to have the DLC panel, but weren't quite there yet. Dead money and honest hearts actually show up in your games list instead of your DLC tab. You MIGHT have to install the game first for those to actually show up. You should have them though, if you do own the ultimate edition.

Can confirm. I have Ultimate. All the DLCs are in game, but not all show in the DLC tab in the Steam library.

That actually has been a small problem in the past with other Extra Life's. If for whatever reason you're uncomfortable with donating directly to them, you could always PM me and we could do a PayPal transfer to my account which I can then donate myself.
Also don't worry about how much you can donate, it's more about the gesture than the amount. Any little bit helps.

Been having usual trouble picking what to play. I should finish up Stasis but didn't feel like it. I like it, but the adventure game puzzles and the environment are getting a bit too obtuse to be enjoyable.
So instead I started up that stealth sidescroller Assassin's Creed China game. Pretty good. Looks nice. The difficulty seems to have really spiked up a bit but still interesting. The checkpointing is kind of annoying. It has a tendency to put you just slightly too far back. Or put the checkpoint right before a slow climb or slow moving cutscene rather than after it. So instead of making me want to keep going just a bit more instead of going to sleep it tends to convince me after some screw ups that now would in fact be a good time to go to bed.

I'm getting antsy waiting for Battlefront to come out so I started playing Jedi Outcast again last night. I'm actually surprised at how much detail is in that game considering how old it is. The models and animation are a little janky, but the game itself actually holds up pretty well. Quake 3 engine was the best engine for so long.
