Balance is tough. More than a few people saying my latest level is too easy, which it is, intentionally, but maybe it's too much. My main thinking was that people generally hate water levels and I wanted to show you can do fun stuff in them too. But I guess I went too simple.

I like seeing this kind of comment though, this is the whole reason I made the level, the look of all those hapless goombas packed into the small space, I love it.

Yeah, i think having the levels be stand alone realy makes balance difficult. Do people expect a 1-1 level or a 7-3 level? Who is the audience here? I don't think there is a solution and your level will be above some folks and beneath others, unless you try for one of the poles.

Congrats on being #1 in NA. That's pretty fucking awesome. Your levels are great, and you deserve it.

Hmm.. i have to figure out how to access my miverse stuff on the web

The chasm between difficulty possibilities is so huge, you WILL never appease everyone. The way I used doors to reset things in that one level is the closest you can come. Make a challenge but give unlimited chances at it. It was pretty much an effective checkpoint system really in that each room you could try over and over again but never had to go back to the beginning, but it was also a very one dimensional level design to achieve it.

I don't know why people hate water levels. Wings can add a lot to enemies there. I think goombas become a massive threat underwater with wings. They move fast, their aim is true, and they never stop. Until you step on them to get rid of the wings.

But man hardest enemy has to go to the bone fish with wings underwater. Those things are FAST and will home in on you well. Shoot them out of a bullet bill launcher and its basically torpedo ballistics all up in your face.

Right now you enjoy the hell out of it!

Later? Mournfully tell stories of your glory days to strangers in the bar who really don't want to hear it, eventually sobbing drunkenly into your liquor before stumbling out to your Uber ride. Eventually you'll go sober and get a second wind for life, which you will spend futilely chasing the former glory for a time. You won't reach the same heights, but you'll get just enough successes to break the worst of your funk, at which point you'll travel around giving talks and occasionally tutoring troubled youth. Your memoirs will be a last great note, hitting a few top marks on book sales lists (mostly digital ones), and you'll retire into a quiet elderly community where no one has any idea who you are.

On this talk of difficulty, I'm really surprised that my latest (real) level, Sphere, has over a 60% success rate.

I intentionally avoided trying to make it too hard, but I seem to have overcompensated!

To be fair, I created a level where it is impossible to die, and it still doesn't have a 100% completion rate.

Honestly I felt like you hit the sweet spot. It was engaging enough without being deadly / forcing replays.

I'd bet a large portion of the players at this point are PA people as well, since it's a SMMC entry? Which would mean a higher skill rate on average than randoms.

Yeah, I try to bounce back and forth between easy and a bit tougher (at least on the scale of the levels I make). I've got some with a 15% completion rate and some at 60-70%.

Yeah, I'm sure that's part of it Glad to hear you liked it!

I did also try really hard to avoid adding anything that would make someone swipe (it is already an underwater level after all), so I might just be getting more retries. I should check the percentage of players that actually finished the level to see if it's higher. Right now most of my levels run around 50%.

Riptor did a similar thing! Not exactly but the idea of a slightly glitchy game.
I gotta say my most popular stage is So you Blew in the Cart huh? (2ABE-0000-0056-B342)
I did an obscure glitch level as a proof-of-concept day the game came out, "Breakdown". I also later made an extended version. To-date only 31 players have tried Breakdown (0C94-0000-001E-69FD) and only 22 have tried Extended Breakdown (21E0-0000-002B-F136). It's a little sad, because I really liked designing and playing them. I thought others would "get" it, too, but apparently not.

My first post was 6 levels at once, and I used a spoiler tag (later removed) to not take up a lot of space. I've noticed people seem incredibly reluctant to click them, even when the context is that there's no actual spoiler. Might have had something to do with barely anyone ever trying them.

Thx! Coming form you, that means a lot. I've actually had to copy and paste two Semisolids over each other to remove the tiny potholes in the art.
Also, I've used so many groundblocks for the look of this level the game prohibited me from placing any more... :-/

And timing the snake to be tough but avoidable took some sweet time as well. Hope you like the gameplay as well!

so this is fascinating; my course Soufflé Hills that @UncleSporky skyrocketed into visibility (1113 attempts so far, dang!) has been plummeted into an a 7.6% completion rate! It's interesting to see the comments people are leaving about the difficulty, because the level is really straight forward and simple with no pressure challenges/puzzles

I am wondering now just how easy one should go out of their way to design; my latest non-SMMC entry, Raspberry Meadows, I actually playtested several times to make sure you could complete without having to run at all, for example.

also I am noticing how stingy people are with their stars! must be that 100 Mario Challenge that makes people so star-shy.

I think most people are just too lazy to actually hit it.

I think most people only star "great" levels.

Probably a better strategy is to star all "not actively terrible" levels.
