You can only receive advice if you ask for it in a manner such that both the request and answer are complaints about jobs.

For any and all management/supervisory types out there there is a right way to help someone under your supervision improve:

First, point out the underling's error without dismissing their intelligence.

Second, if you failed to notice the error in prior drafts, admit to doing so instead of suggesting that the underling sprung it on you and is dishonest.

Third, after you point out the underling's error, teach them how to do it correctly instead of having the underling figure out what, exactly, is wrong because just being told something is wrong without any additional guidance does jack shit.

Fourth, be open to discussing the issue with the underling and how they can get better. This includes not being pissy with the underling when they ask for your guidance, mentorship, etc and telling the underling that they are wasting your very valuable time. I know teaching is hard, but it's part of being a good supervisor!

Man, would be nice to have a good supervisor.

So that's where my old supervisor went!

The only time I've put "please advise." is after I followed the persons explicit instructions after giving a written protest that they were out of their god damn minds and that shit would hit the fan.

"Just following up, I followed your instructions and per my previous email shit has hit the fan.

    Please advise."

    On a more important note,

I have not seen the duck I rescued from our parking lot for a few weeks and I am concerned but maybe it is just really good at hiding in the reeds so I'm trying to remain hopefully optimistic.

So. About, eh 9 months ago I landed a pretty decent job. Or as decent as you get in this area without some kind of degree. The pay is great (again, for this area) but man, you definitely earn it (manufacturing. 12 hour swing shifts. Lotta heavy lifting.)

Well, problem is I hate my town. It is a desolate void of rednecks and cows and occasional meth lab explosions. I really want to move about 4 hours away down towards the coast where things are just the worst ever. The cost of living is a fair tick higher than where I'm at, though, and most of the jobs in that specific area are all pretty much service industry based. Tourism and restaurants and such. I've sent off two applications so far to plants nearby that looked like I might be reasonably qualified for but I have no clue how long it might be before I hear from them, if at all. One I'm pretty sure is not gonna call me back. It was a bit of a stretch.

But man I am getting a serious itch to just up and move. So I guess what I'm getting at is: should I wait to pull the trigger until I have something definitive lined up or should I save and then just make a go of it? It really wouldn't take me more than a couple of months to save up enough to keep alive for a good while, provided I was thrifty. I've also got family in the area who have already offered to let me stay at their place should I move so I wouldn't be risking a whole lot other than the job I have now but I'd really like to be self sufficient ASAP, though so my first inclination is to just keep shooting off applications until I get a bite. I just don't really want to step back down on my paycheck. I've lived on negative account balances and peanut butter enough and I don't know if I can do it again. Especially with a car payment and increased rent.

Edit: gonna spoil that cause its kinda long.

I would wait until you've got somewhere lined up, but I'm a cautionary kind of person that way. It's good you're seeking something better.

I generally agree with Liiya, but sometimes that is not possible and you just gotta make a leap.

I would try to remember that there's a whole hell of a lot of places other than wherever you are that you can move to as well, so consider widening your search parameters.

That's fair! It may be one of those situations where you can only know what's best by being in it. I definitely agree widening a search is a good idea.

    Work thoughts before work tomorrow.

Hmmmm maybe don't have meetings first thing Monday morning to go over the schedule, only to have changed the schedule over the weekend and SURPRISE expect everyone to magically know about the schedule changes.

Also don't give one manager one set of deadlines and another manager another set of deadlines and tell them both that the same entry level person will be the one to complete all the deadlines, it just confuses everyone and no deadlines get completed. Also when you give deadlines, actually tell the people you are assigning the deadlines what they are, dont just avoid this step because you "hate meetings."

Also don't stop people walking out the door to go home on Friday in order to grill them about the work they did that week. Maybe wait until next week for that. Maybe never do that.

I agree with the preceding esteemed posters. Also, constructing a 5 month, 1 year and 2 year plan might serve you well. For me, plans help to dampen impulses as there's always something concrete to work towards(ymmv). Good luck whatever you choose, ask for some lemurs when appropriate, the bloody things are magical.

Pride burnt me out at work. I get that it's cool to go nearly buck naked when out celebrating but you have a backpack, carry a poncho or something for when you come into the grocery store and also maybe don't act like the party just carries on right through the doors. Also for some reason, we had a big uptick is really aggressive and persistent homeless thieves today, well err yesterday. Sunday. We had six LP plus the armed security at one point and they were all busy all the time. Last guy I kicked out had actually been trying to start fights with other homeless people all day and tried to steal a clock off the wall on his way out and then tried to pick a fight with security.

There's a weekend supervisor who was supposed to take care of the weekend work so Mondays were not so bad. Only, I have no idea what she does.
There were four samples due today that were not scheduled. And two batches of samples not due today that were. The analysts had already started working on one of the batches not due, but I got to the other one before it had begun so I could take it out of the schedule.
So now they will be overworked because the weekend supervisor doesn't schedule properly. At one point, I wanted to come in half days on Sundays to fix this mess, but was told the weekend supervisor would take care of it.
The two other supervisors I work with spend a lot of time in the lab doing work, but not actually managing people or work or much of anything. You're not analysts.. stop doing analyst work and do your job..

Elevator was not working/delayed on the lobby, so I decided to take the stairs because I am young and fit and cool like that.

I barely reached floor 4 out of 8 before I had to stop and catch my breath. By floor 8 I was panting heavily and feeling the coffee back up on my throat, so I needed double the water by the time I hit my desk.

That's the start of my week.

Conversations with my grandmother about her end of life choices:

"I'd like to be resting next to your grandfather when it's my time."
"...Grandma, he's in an urn in your underwear drawer."
"I suppose I shouldn't end up in my own underwear drawer should I? Just take me back to The Bronx."

Backstory: My Grandfather died almost 20 years ago to smoking related illnesses. His request? Cremation and "well, I want to be in <Grandmother's> lingerie drawer."

We think...THINK...he was joking. But to this day it's where he remains.

We have upper management visiting my workplace this week. This morning my manager called us (IT) into a meeting. Apparently last time these people were here, they went back to the mothership and reported that everyone here was extremely negative, and no wonder our business is failing (it isn't).

The thing is, our company culture involves a lot of snark, very dry humor, and friendly ribbing. So every team in the building is getting the same talk from their manager today to not do that this week. We are to be nothing but sunny, positive, and consummately professional until the higher-ups are gone.

    Should be an interesting week...

Welp there goes a week's pay.

Prescription safety glasses broke from wear and tear, so now I have to go to the doctor Monday and get my prescription updated and a new pair ordered. This will, of course, be completely out of pocket because the company stopped paying for glasses last year, and prescription safety glasses are not covered under insurance.

@korodullin I know this is probably cold comfort, but you can claim safety equipment, tools, uniforms etc that you paid for out of pocket on your taxes. It's a 100% write off most of the time.

My dad called me last night, speaking of end of life choices, and wanted to know if he should let me brother and his girlfriend take over the house after my mother dies, and dad will just go out to his cabin in the desert. I suggested maybe an assisted living facility, but then he wanted to split time between down where he, my mother, and my brother and his girlfriend live, and up here where I am.
To the best of my knowledge, my mother isn't sick (though we will be having a conversation about this soon), and if I had to put money on it (and I do!), I'd guess my father will die before my mom.

That's an odd conversation to have with nothing leading up to it.

I got a package in the mail a few weeks ago that was an amendment to my parents' will outlining their end-of-life medical intervention preferences and how power of attorney would be divided when one or both of them die or are functionally compromised.

It was all very straight forward and not scary and now we have clear instructions and so do their lawyers.

It's a Good Thing™ to make a comprehensive will while you're still healthy.

The good news is I start my new job next week and get to make money and be productive again. The okay news is that the company is taking care of housing me until my contract is up in January so no rent or utilities for a while. The bad news is, "housing" is a motel room without internet in BFE. Not a huge deal to most people but giving up Overwatch and SFV for six months is going to be kinda rough. I have, however, been informed that the hotel room has a DVD player, so there's that!

Today I got a pat on the head because I was able to teach someone in the office how to make their Excel sheet go in alphabetical order.

She originally asked me to send her a whole new list because she didn't know she could do it herself. Now I feel like I should have just re-sent it so she would have thought I put in a lot more work than I actually did.

Or was this a metaphorical pat on the head?
