It is very strange to me that an organisation that is inherently not a LGBT organisation would have floats or booths at a pride parade.
Like, there's a pretty specific reason why these parades happen, so anything involved with them had better be related.
If there was like an LGBT-only police officers group that marched, sure okay that's cool I guess. But the rest of it doesn't make any sense and feels like a group pushing its way into something it isn't involved in. Especially a group which such a muddy connection to LGBT topics...

I'm curious about what attempts BLM/other organizations made to bring those demands up to organizers before the day of the parade. I didn't find any mention of this in the articles I've read. It'd really help if we knew there were previous efforts that were brushed off. (Not saying that it's necessarily wrong of them if there were no previous attempts either; this information would really one help better understand the situation, is all.)

Most comments I could find were that Pride organizers weren't given prior notification of the demonstration, instead of whether or not any attempts/demands were made beforehand. I did a brief scan of the BLM TO twitter and there's some previous tweets expressing concern regarding funding being pulled for stages involving marginalized groups, for instance.

Dismissing the backbreaking work that took innumerable people years and years of sacrifice and pain as "oh it was inevitable", or "oh but it doesn't REALLY matter", particularly in the LGBT thread, is a pretty shitty thing to do.

They were originally expecting around 200 people and were hoping for 1000, there were over 5000 people there which is, incidentally, over 1/3 the population of Steinbach
There were only two (2) porta potties so people had to go to the library and subway that were nearby
After the march the library was hosting an event that could hold a whopping 35 people
Everyone was cute
I took a chance and wore my wig and best outfit and several people complemented me on it which was great (my first time being out in the open)
I was accidentally at the front when they had a pre-march speech and there were definitely CBC cameras rolling but it doesn't look like it made it onto the non-live show cut

The march was fun though kinda short, it was cloudy so it didn't get too hot. There were people lining the sidewalks cheering as the parade went on
The parade stopped at the city hall and when we got there, keeping in mind that we were not even close to the first people there, they announced that a large portion of people had yet to leave the starting area. When those people arrived the RCMP had to close off an additional street to fit everyone so they had a chance to hear what was going on
There were a bunch of speakers: a gay hutterite man, the head of a two spirit advocacy organization, a trans man who recently authored a book, a woman with Egyptian parents who talked at length about the deep seated issues the LGBT community has with people of colour, and a bunch more. It kinda went on a bit long but it was all good stuff though the kids in the audience were dying to leave.
