I usually stop watching trailers after the second one, as they typically start loading up on spoilers like crazy.

Movie is out in three weeks, I can totally wait.

I think that's the same guy, unless they show em side by side on screen simultaneously? Godzilla seems to get skinnier as the movie goes on due to the pink form sucking the life out of him.

Is Trajan45 referring to the very Godzilla-like eyes behind the Lavafall that uses a breath attack on Kong? That's the new Kaiju named Shimo (spelling?). It is a quadrupedal one that has Ice breath and is apparently larger than Godzilla.

Yeah the new commercial is way more explicit.
They show it fighting with Godzilla. At least with mechagodzilla they kept it pretty hidden till after the movie launched.

I think Minus One has the perfect aim for graphics. They look real and they fit in with the overall movie visual. The effects don't look too clean or too rough, they just fit.

idk, I loved Minus One, but the visual effects of Godzilla at night on the island was kind of video game level quality. Monarch the TV show was more polished. I'm not knocking them for it, since Minus One's budget wasn't that large and they had a bunch of cool style effects.

I'm happy they won the Oscar. I have no idea what goes into the judging for the category, and if polish is less important that style, maybe that's why. There was a story from an Oscar voter who was asked why they were voting for Robert Downy this year. The response was that the voter met him at a party and he was an amazing person haha. So none of it really matters. Happy for the group, love the golden Godzilla with bowtie.

Rewatched Skull Island and man this movie is legitimately great. I've been positive about it since I first saw it but man, the script it tight, the human plot is interesting and the monster fights are great.(And there's lots of critters)

Really the only thing it lacks is character development, but I don't think the film suffers for it. You have a lot of great actors playing very specific character archtypes and it works. John C. Reilly is a delight in this film.

That said, I'm not entirely sure I can believe this Bill Randa is the same guy from Legacy of Monarch, even after all of the things that guy suffered through. There was a warmth and joy to Randa in that series that is entirely not present here. Also some stuff doesn't quite line up (Monarch is founded in the 40's here, Randa is searching for proof of monsters when they had tons of proof in the series. (you could supplant that for him trying to prove his hollow earth theory if you squint.))

I saw the announced the Blu-ray for Minus One in Japan to release on 5/1. If it has English subs i am definitely buying it. I waited like 1.5 years for Shin and i am not waiting that long for Minus One. I have been itching to watch it again, especially after it actually won at the academy awards.

Gave Godzilla 2014 another watch and I think I actually liked it more this time than the previous four or five times I've watched it.

It's very easy to me to look at them replacing the best actor and character in the movie with Blandy McBlanderson, and I will still continue to say that was a mistake.

But my other big gripe with the movie is how it loves to tease godzilla and the mutos fighting but always fucks it up until the end of the movie, and I think I figured out what happened.

There's two kinds of Kaiju flicks, in my mind.

The first is the classic; man vs monster; you have a big critter show up and it's up to humans to find a way to survive or defeat the creature.

The second in the monster mash; now you have two or more monsters and damn straight they're going to fight.

Godzilla 2014 is shot and framed firmly in the former camp; it's a movie about the MUTOs. They drive the plot and feature a lot more than Godzilla. Even Godzilla's only real role in the film is to kill the MUTOs.

But Godzilla IS in the movie, and every time the plot is steering towards monster mash, it cuts away because that's not the movie at play here. The real movie is a tense cat and mouse game between the Luckiest Unlucky Man in the Universe and these ancient bug monsters. Occasionally Godzilla barrels into the plot, but the movie isn't interested in Godzilla beyond the ability to get cool establishing shots. It's not until the movie is almost over and they need to get rid of the MUTOs do they apply the fantastic cinematography to a monster throw down after teasing us the entire movie.

But if you ignore those two issues, it's actually an incredibly well shot movie with a ton of amazing setpieces.

It's good enough that you ignore the things that don't make sense, like where does the massive riptide/tidal wave come from in Hawaii, was it from Godzilla? Why didn't that happen any other time Godzilla was on screen? Or why was that train on fire? The muto doesn't have any flame attack. Who cares, it looked fucking awesome!

And that's this movie in a nutshell, incredible looking shots of giant monsters. The movie is especially gifted in using dust and fog to do cool shots with the critters.

But yeah, Ford Brody sucks and Joe Brody working with Monarch would have been much more interesting. Ah well.

My cat, Mischief, is my biggest inspiration in life, and when I met the director of Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki, it turns out that his cat was a major influence on him as well, in terms of his approach towards Godzilla and his mannerisms. So if you’re a Godzilla director right now, cats are mind controlling us or something. (Laughs.) But, yeah, to design a sequence where Godzilla is hibernating, you’re always trying to juxtapose Godzilla against iconic backdrops that everybody knows. So we were trying to come up with a place where Godzilla could hibernate, and as we were having this discussion with my production designer [Tom Hammock], my cat was curled up in a ball and sleeping in her circular little cat nest. And I thought, “Wow, wouldn’t it be funny to see Godzilla laying in the Roman Colosseum exactly like this?” We then took a picture of her and sent it to the concept artists. So they made it happen based on Mischief, and there’s also photos of her throughout the movie as a little homage.

Had no idea Dan Stevens was in it, now I'm hyped.

I saw the new Godzilla movie while visiting family in Japan. My Japanese is limited, but you don't need much to understand this B-Grade movie. Per family members, very little is explained, lots of things just happen with no setup or foreshadowing, there were no female characters (just plot devices for the main character and to set up the sequel), the wins and feel unearned, and the tag line appears to be "don't think about it". It met my expectations and I am happy I watched a Godzilla movie in Japan with family.

The special effects felt deliberately low quality for Godzilla itself which was an interesting stylistic choice, but which made the Japanese B-Movie feel a lot more authentic.

...are you talking about Minus One?

Because those effects were legit fantastic, and I'd contest any assertion that Noriko, Sumiko, or Akiko were just plot devices.

And everything happens for pretty clear reasons. Nothing tripped my bullshit detector.

The Oscar field seemed weak which I'm sure helped. Minus One is kind of like when World of Warcraft came out. Was it Crysis? Not even close, but the aesthetics and style more than made up for it. It can't be overstated that Minus One's budget was probably close to 1-2 episodes of Legacy of Monsters. They did an amazing job with what resources they had.

I do secretly hope since it did so well, someone goes into that night island scene and does some cleanup for the bluray.

    Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Too much of my feelings for this movie are wrapped up in this trailer
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wVDtmouV9kM

It's a wonderful trailer that expresses Kaiju in a way I haven't seen a film truly tackle before; with reverence and awe. Usually they're either living natural distasters or giant superheroes, but here they feel like even though they're dangerous, they're still fantastical and wonderous creatures.

This trailer is one of my all time favorites. It made me more hyped for this film than endgame. It made me finally track down every Toho monster movie I could get my hands on and watch them all. I've been a Godzilla appreciator for ages, but that trailer made me a FAN.

...and the movie winds up being a bog standard kaiju monster mash. Any reverence towards the monsters quickly gets swept away for standard hollywood action movie plot and/or giant monsters beating the shit out of each other, and at the end of the day, is that something I should really be giving it shit for? That it had a deceptive trailer?

So on the merits on what this film IS and not what the trailer made it look to be, how is it?

There's something wrong with this film man, and I can't put my finger on it. Like it has all of the elements, cool monster designs, fun set pieces, a somewhat decent plot.. where does it go wrong?

'course the first problem is that the main character is not particularly interesting to watch, and it's kind of annoying that he has to explain Godzilla's behavior to the fucking Godzilla experts. Serizawa spends more of this film being explained why Godzilla is doing something than doing the explaining himself, and he's like Godzilla's #1 fan.

Speaking of Serizawa, this franchise is extremely keen on making sure no interesting human characters get retained for long It's like they wanted a cinematic universe but also didn't want to get anyone on a longterm contract. Killing Serizawa was lame, especially after they killed the one other character from Godzilla 2014 like 30 minutes previous.

I will say the music is this movie was excellent. 2014 had a great soundtrack, but bringing in some of the old themes was great. I generally teared up the first time the Mothra theme played. The song played over the end credits was excellent, even if it is incongruent with the Monsterverse Godzilla. Actually, I think that sums up the music in this film nicely; a great soundtrack that deserved a different film.

Going back to the trailer, I think this might just be a case of tone and demonstrating how editing and music can radically change the tone of a film; in the end, this was a pretty average hollywood kaiju flick that had the misfortune of having a beautiful trailer made for it that made it look like something I hadn't even realized I wanted, and then failed to deliver upon it, leaving me still hungry for a "Wonderful and Terrible World of Kaiju" flick.

Also, what a waste of the oxygen destroyer, good grief.
