Speaking of movies, I enjoyed the Magnificent 7 remake. I never saw the original. I shoiluld fix that.

It was enjoyable, nothing special. One day I'll with a review of it in the movie thread. Denzel Washington is utterly fantastic, as always.

Being a fan of Cinema Sins would be an excellent barometer for measuring the worthlessness of someone's opinions, but I don't think I've ever met anyone who extolled their virtues.

The awful reductive nature of the videos reminds me of TVTropes, another cultural bus I'd rather eat my own flesh than board. I guess the artistic equivalent are those grim parody films that were churned out a few years ago ostensibly making fun of whatever blockbuster movie was popular the summer before but in actuality was nothing more than a series of references to movies masquerading as jokes. Do you recognise this reference? Can you spot this trope? Can you find a nitpick?

I would have loved to post Cinema Sins dissection of M7 as a reply to this. :)

So far this day is starting out stunningly.

I forgot my tea for work so I will have no constant supply of caffeine.

Forgot my glasses in my car because I had my sunglasses on since the sun was perfectly placed to blind me this morning.

Got caught in security theater on the way in.

    Swimmingly.

The James Blake show yesterday was amazing

(plus Vince Staples was an opener - tho seeing him there was v different than last year at Music Hall obvi - the overlap of James Blake fans that are Vince Staples fan is sizable but prob not massive)

And it was also nice to be at Radio City Music Hall with adults instead of a parking lot with teenagers, I think the last time I was there was seeing the Rockettes as a kid

Also obviously Radio City has a very good sound system
That was a lot of bass

Cinema Sins is fine if you understand it's tongue in cheek since it takes a lot of shit without context. Some of its points are good, most of it is down right nit picking or just inaccurate.

not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me

that's one of the points the video I linked makes; the guys who do the channel claim that it's a joke, but they have a separate channel for their serious reviews...and it's all the same stuff

    lol

also, their original videos, which were about action movies that they obviously loved, generally didn't take things out-of-context or misunderstand anything. i think it's fair to suppose that the demands of chasing the internet dollar have maybe pushed them into watching things that they aren't really interested in paying attention to

The thing that infuriates me is when they bitch about a movie having major plot holes or continuity issues when it's just them not paying attention

in the last one I saw, I don't remember what it is but if you paused i while they were complaining there was literally a thing onscreen contradicting their point while they were making it

One Punch Man is a good anime I think. We will see when it's over but it may join some esteemed company on the list of anime that's alright.

@Donkey Kong What else is on this list? Please advise.

    @Giggles_Funsworth
Cowboy Bebop. Ghost in the Shell: standalone complex (especially episodes where the major wears pants). That's it. Like Miyazaki says, anime was a mistake.

I know someone who likes CinemaSins, she started YouTubing with John and Hank Green and kind of branched out from there. I can't say I've ever seen it, and generally I don't view 90% of YouTube since vloggers' YouTube Voice in all of its iterations makes me grind my teeth.

That video easay criticism of it seemed pretty self indulgent (jokes "jokes", rando's youtube comments as some kind of barometer for cultural penetration) and I got about 4 minutes in before I decided to conserve mobile data. Moreover, I don't know who the target audience of that video is. Are they hoping some CinemaSins viewers will view it and see the error of their ways?

There's some kind of larger discussion to be had that I can't right unpack at work wrt some kind of imperative to criticise shitty media or politics instead of just not engaging with them.
