not cool enough that I want to go back to summoner. micromanaging buffs is one thing I cannot stand to do. do we have any idea how samurai or red mage play yet?

Red Mage seems to use ranged spells to fill up some meters, and then melee attacks deplete that meter
Maybe the coolest thing being that it seems to have abilities that allow it to quickly close the gap and jump backward to switch ranges quickly without running around
Samurai's UI elements didn't really give me a clear idea on how any of the stuff he was doing worked exactly
Ninja can summon a frog that belches out a Fireball though, so that's a strong contender for my choices of DPS jobs to level up

Samurai has two different resources: the kenki gauge and Sen (the three symbols)
Each Sen is obtained through one of three combo trees. You expend a different amount to make specific attacks happen (only 1 sen available does a DoT effect, having 2 does a powerful AoE, having all 3 does a massive single-target attack). Meanwhile, the kenki gauge is increased by all your main combos and some off-GCD abilities. It can be consumed to do powerful off-GCD attacks or give yourself buffs.
I was already playing nin in heavensward since it had the least ability bloat with the expansion. I'm probably going to need to wait until the expansion drops and people hit 80 to see if it's something I want

I mean,
I hate to break it to you but "super mode with a finisher and that's it" is about as little micro managing of buffs you're gonna get.
I don't really understand your complaint though. You just push death flare when you have a few seconds left on trance. You don't have to be absolutely perfect or nothing. It's even got a shiny new timer UI to keep track of it.
I don't want to look at my buff bar ever. keeping track of buff timers completely takes me out of the game and was something I never had to do until HW

Well then I don't think FF14 is the game for you then.
probably not, which is why I haven't felt any desire to reup. it's too bad because I in vanilla I never even leveled another job because all I wanted to play was summoner and now I can't even stomach it for a single dungeon run

Also if you wanna get in real deep people have literally discovered the rotations for the new jobs down to like, potency per second and shit
Mostly yes. But potencies aren't locked in yet that's just what people are pulling through the various demo versions available so none of that should be taken as fact for comparison sake.
But yes we do know the skill sets and how they work. That is certainly true.
WoW's level of short duration buff juggling seems pretty minimal compared to FF14's and it's already at the limit of my tolerance there so I don't think I'd enjoy FF14's gameplay, but I've never given it a try at all so maybe it would magically not feel terrible somehow? I dunno.

I really wanna play FF14, but I can't afford to buy the damn game.

It is, but you can't message people or party with people or do a ton of basic functions.

Good news! Square Enix has announced that it is no longer limiting the MMORPG’s free trial to fourteen days.
According to the FFXIV’s most recent patch notes, “The 14-day limit of the free trial has been removed.”
The Japanese patch notes are a bit more specific, explicitly stating that the fourteen day period has been changed to “indefinite” (14日間から無期限に変更されます).
The free trial still has certain caps and restrictions, but this certainly seems like a welcomed way to incite players to give the game a look.
The following terms and conditions apply to players who choose to use the FINAL FANTASY® XIV (the “game”) free trial (“Free Trial”).
These Free Trial terms are incorporated into the FINAL FANTASY® XIV User Agreement, located here (http://sqex.to/ffxiv_ua_na). By participating in the Free Trial, users agree to be bound by the FINAL FANTASY® XIV User Agreement, the Square Enix Privacy Policy, and all other applicable Square Enix and FINAL FANTASY® XIV policies and terms of service.
The following terms and conditions apply to players who use the Free Trial (“Free Trial Players”):
Free Trial Players are not required to purchase licensed software to use the Free Trial.
One (1) Free Trial account may be registered using a Square Enix account so long as that Square Enix account has not been previously registered with any version of the game.
Free Trial Players cannot make in-game micro transactions during the Free Trial.
Free Trial Players can create only eight (8) playable characters, restricted to one (1) playable character per world.
Free Trial account characters have their level capped at level thirty five (35).
Free Trial account characters can obtain only a capped amount of in game currency (GIL).
Free Trial Players cannot use the "shout", "yell" or "tell" in-game chat options during the Free Trial.
Free Trial Players cannot access the in-game market board during the Free Trial.
Free Trial Players cannot trade items with other players during the Free Trial.
Free Trial Players cannot use the Mogletter service during the Free Trial.
Free Trial Players cannot hire a retainer character during the Free Trial.
Free Trial Players can join a Linkshell if invited, but cannot create a new Linkshell during the Free Trial.
Free Trial Players cannot create or join a Free Company during the Free Trial.
Free Trial Players can join a party if invited or by using the Duty Finder, but cannot assemble a party during the Free Trial.
Free Trial Players cannot login to the Lodestone and or any other game forum during the Free Trial.
Free Trial Players cannot progress past Floor 10 in the Deep Dungeon during the Free Trial.
Square Enix reserves the right to make amendments to the Free Trial and these Free Trial terms, or to add or remove limitations on Free Trial Players, with or without notice in its sole discretion at any time.
Ah yeah that sucks. I guess it's fine for me because I'm antisocial
I played the trial like a year ago and maxed out 2 classes, which I think was level 20. I could only do dungeons by matchmaking with randoms but it was still fun and I had a grand old time.

ninja was okay but not ideal. huton has a 70 second duration and you have a finisher that adds 30 seconds to it so it's not a lot of buff management but it's still there to an extent

ability bloat is a big issue and it sucks because I really want to like ff14, but dear god no more john fucking madden mmos for me
I've been tempted enough by FF14 to try it several times, but I always get 20-30 levels in, remember that I hate its combat, and stop. Then a year or so later I'll have forgotten that, but also forgotten what email the last trial was registered to, and since SE's account recovery process is still stricter than my bank's, I'll wind up making a new account, grinding it up to 20 or 30, and anandoning it too. I have three of these now, I'm pretty sure.

The Distant Worlds: Music of Final Fantasy concert is in three hours, and I'm excited enough that I got here way the hell too early, so I could sit in a cafe down the street from the concert playing FF8 on my laptop and trying to conjure my nostalgia goggles thick enough that I can ignore how shitty it looks now.

City of Heroes ruined me for all other MMO combat forever. Every time my FF14 Dragoon would take a few minutes to spear some hell-chicken or something to death, I'd be thinking "my Electric Brute would have cleared a whole warehouse full of ninja cultists by now."

From what little I played, I enjoyed the FF14 combat. So like, a couple levels in the free trial.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I think they said when talking about the expansion that their goal is to reduce ability bloat, but I haven't been following the details over time

Hah.
See Ninja is the example I would use of juggling timers to an extent I did not enjoy. I much enjoy FF14 and recently was playing NIN and it hit the point of staring at too many timers instead of the combat for me. Granted besides that I just play tanks and those (PLD and DRK at least) required far less staring at timers and just enjoying to play the game instead.
they are pruning a ton from what we've seen, it seems to be at a level that i like a lot. I like complexity and a skill curve but some shit in HW was... a lot.

Was just looking through pre-orders on PSN and didn't realize that Valkyria Revolution is out in like, three weeks and also it's $40 instead of $60
Everybody's Golf (not a JRPG but distinctly Japanese) is also $40 instead of $60

And then WoW needs to go back to their own shit and do it again
Adding buttons.
EDIT: Like, I was at a point where I was comfortably playing with an xbox controller and barely using half the buttons.
It is, and they are. Though some classes are getting more pruning than others. It's not as much pruning as I'd have liked.
But if they'd just make each move in a combo not have to be it's own button that'd pretty much fix the bloat for a lot of the melee classes.
Hah.
