Chain of Memories was my first Kingdom Hearts game so I've got a soft spot for it, including the gameplay.

Well, the Riku half is very important.

I mean, it's ALL really important, which is why it's canon, but the fact that no one remembers it happened is just kind of funny
I beat Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories today, and it makes the beginning of KH2 a lot more hilarious
???
So the basic plot of Chain of Memories is that Sora is lured to this castle, where Namine is systematically altering his memories so he can be used as a tool for the Organization. This plan ultimately fails, though Namine DOES succeed at messing with his memories enough where he no longer remembers anything before entering the castle. Namine offers to fix this, but it could take some time, and he basically has to be in a coma in this pod looking thing until its done. She mentions that the only way for her to fix his memories, is to basically erase any memory of anything that happened during Chain of Memories. Sora says okay and then jumps in, but not before Jiminy has a brilliant idea of 'hey, I'll just write in my journal to "Thank Namine" so even if we forget, we'll read the journal after and remember!
Fast forward to the 2nd game, where Sora emerges from the same pod after a year, with his old memories intact. As Namine predicted, they have no memory of anything that hapened in CoM, which is why its never referenced, and when they look at Jiminy's journal, and see the lone entry of "Thank Namine" their reacton is basically "Who the hell is that? Oh well, must not be very important."
I guess he didn't get it memorized.

I played Chain of Memories almost 15 years ago.
I am surprised I remember anything about the game.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I'm actually in the middle of playing the 1.5/2.5 remixes for the first time because I wanted something lengthy to play when not recording stuff with my buddy, and I've only ever played kh1/2 and chain of memories on gba
I don't think I ever finished CoM at the time and remember strongly disliking it and that's where I'm at now in the remixes so I'm sure this is gonna be super fun
When I played the remakes, Chain of Memories was the only bit I skipped. I gave it my best shot, but I was like 10-12 hours in and couldn't stand it for another minute. Then I went and watched the important cutscenes on YouTube and moved on to KH2 with no regrets.
Well, 10-12 hours worth of regrets.

So, there are two ways you can do this:
Watch a youtube video with the cutscenes (at least in the part with Sora, you can skip anything that doesn't actually take place in Castle Oblivion.) Literally everything that happens in the disney worlds this time around is useless for the overall plot.
OR, actually try and play the game, which is actually generally very cheesible.
I suggest building two decks; a boss deck and a non-boss deck. The boss deck you can basically fill with a single combo that's stop/attack/attack cards once you get it that basically says fuck you to nearly every single boss, and all the truly difficult ones.

i never thought of doing that for bosses
I'm understanding the game on a mechanical level a lot better than I did however many years ago the gba version was, but its still not... good

A general rule is that bosses are quite vulnerable to sleights and 0 rank cards, both of which are essentially useless in regular fights.
Wooo probably going to finish Odin Sphere tomorrow!
Gotta get the good ending, then fill in the story grid to get the true ending. Won't take to long since I know the most efficient way.
Then I gotta figure out which recipes I haven't cooked at Maury's so I can get the Platinum.
I actually just picked Odin Sphere back up myself. Just started Oswald's story. So far I'm a little put off because it feels like he swings really slow compared to others.
Oswald's weird rhythm is both made up for and changed by his shadow form, which allows him to do more damage than anyone short of Gwendolyn with her limiters turned off. Maybe more than her, even

Shadow Form is super nice, but at least so far, it's hard to get and short duration.
talking about ff14 has made me more interested in it again but I still would really want to wait and see how things shake out with jobs at max level first. I looked at the sam abilities but it didn't give me a very good idea of how exactly they play
they use base combos to build up 3 sign thingies. Those sign thingies allow them to use a few big skills based on the number of sign thingies you use.
Your weapon skills also generate a second resource(kenki) that can be used for another set of skills.
Little in the way of positionals, no DoT, low group utility, high potency attacks.
Basically they have 2 builder and dump systems and just dish out damage. Seems very straightforward and if I didn't hate DPS queue would be right up my alley!
UNRELATED E3 NEWS.
I keep forgetting Ni No Kuni 2 is a thing but it's listed to be at E3 in some form. So that's cool.
Oh hey, what a neat coincidence. A couple of years ago I started Chrono Trigger. That was my first ever JRPG and I couldn't grok the battle system, died a bunch, got distracted and then put the game away. I haven't played any other JRPG since then and picked up Chrono Trigger again today.
Somehow something has clicked and I'm having way more fun. I'm still at the absolute beginning but I'm enjoying just running around the world map, talking to different people, looking at the art and listening to the music. This is kinda cool.

I'm in the last month of persona 3 and having trouble motivating myself to finish.
I've started doing a thing recently (especially when I'm working on a backlog game) is to set aside one night a week just for that game, and let myself play whatever else I feel like instead the rest of the week.

One of the first video games I ever played was the original Final Fantasy, when I was like 4 or 5, and I hated it. I played it for like 10 minutes, but got really frustrated when the game wouldn't let any of my characters run across the screen to beat up those imps. I figured the game was broken and played Castlevania instead.

In Chrono Trigger, most of the party members have dual-techs. Attacks where two characters will use their special skills to complement the other.
One of the first you get is X-strike, where Crono and Frog both charge through an enemy, forming an x-shape.
There are also triple techs, where Crono and the other two party members use a special skill, often for massive damage.
It's something I haven't seen many other RPGs do, but I really liked in Chrono Trigger.

I Am Setsuna is such a love letter to this gameplay mechanic. I wished more games did something like this, only without the roster bloat that Chrono Cross had, since most characters didn't have a dual-tech with others. It was really easy to form a party with no dual or triple techs to fire off at all.
Seeing what double and triple techs would emerge was always the most exciting thing about advancing your character in Chrono Trigger.
It's kind of a bummer that Magus doesn't get any, aside from the two that you had to waste one participant's Accessory slot to enable.
