Yeah my wife plays games, mainly MMOs, which is probably why I'm not shocked by girl gamers or whatever. She tends to be more competent than most dudes I run into in those games too.

I got to play against a top 500 Genji player on Tuesday. They were getting their arcade boxes and somehow ended up matched into a CTF game with 11 gold players.

It was like being chased around by Roy fucking Batty, only scarier and without the mercy.

Yeah, I got matched up against a Master-ranked Tracer who had purposely deranked down into mid-silver. We were attacking Volskaya and our team basically never made it past the first choke. I tried every matchup I could and tried my damndest to get the rest of the team to focus her, but it was just a goddamn bloodbath.

There was a post on the competitive Overwatch subreddit about the Mercy thing, and they brought up an interesting point: when people complain about Mercy players with a 40% win-rate being in Grandmasters, that's... actually not awful. Because the win-rate is just that... the WIN rate. Draws do not contribute to your win-rate. So the rate at which the vaunted "Mercy one-trick" loses games is generally significantly lower, with the final conclusion that Mercies in Masters and GMs, even if that's the only character they play, are no more or less likely to win or lose as a result of their character selection.

Honestly, it's the flavor-of-the-month character hate bandwagon. There will always be an "out" character, the one you're bad for liking, and Mercy's the latest to get the treatment (along with Torbjorn, Symmetra, Hanzo, Widowmaker...).

I've had some new characters join my hated list but almost nobody ever gets off that ride

I assume eventually I will hate literally every single character except Junkrat

Hanzo's design is fine? He's a sniper who can climb up walls to gain position. His recon arrow aids the team, and also helps him aim his scatter arrows (which help him shoot around corners) and his dragonstrike (which goes through walls). There's some luck involved, but there's luck involved with every hero, so...I don't really see the problem

All of my hanzo complaints boil down to two things I can't stand. Being a full health tank who gets one shotted by a scatter arrow aimed at my feet and being headshot by an arrow from across the map by a peeking hanzo who, because of the projectile nature of the arrow, never saw me.

I also dislike dying to junkrat lobbing grenades over four walls and I just happen to get hit by the first one. But that happens so rarely that it isn't that bad. Hanzo' bs occurs repeatedly all match and it just drives me mad. There have been the rare Hanzo that feels like they are being skillful with the character but most are just coming out of spawn again and blind firing down the first corridor they see and *ping* dead. :(

I did get deleted by a Hanzo as Winston earlier today and was rather upset. I think deleting tanks is always a bad thing. The point of tanks is that they can't be deleted!

I simply think snipers don't actually work very well for the type of game Overwatch is, and so the designers do their best, but at the end of the day, it's just always feeling not great.

Edit: Ana works, but that's because her kit is very much against the deletion problem.

I think what saves Hanzo from being terribly broken is that, in order to delete someone, he's first got to slow down a bunch. There's plenty of time for someone to deal with him, in between his lucky shots, unless he's catching you unawares, but that's a bad situation when you're caught by most everyone. Widowmaker is also pretty stationary. A great sniper is going to get kills, yes, but there are shields and very mobile characters that make it difficult for a sniper to completely control a game.

Bear in mind that I play on console, so snipers are...more rare, or at least competent ones are.

honestly a good ana is way more infuriating than a good hanzo or widowmaker, because your death is slow

The secret to these situation is to go Winston and fuck all those squishies up. Ideally, you have a pocket Mercy or Ana for real good times.

You may not complement the rest of the team, but you'll surely get your vengeance.

I hate snipers in every game they're in

they suck the fun out of open combat for anyone who isn't them

hell, as far as I'm concerned, the best thing tf2 ever did was hobble the sniper class

yeah you'll get your sick headshots, but you have to wait a moment between each one, and pray to god your conterclass doesn't catch you succumbing to tunnel vision

There is nothing more satisfying than whittling a Hanzo down with body shots as a mech-less D.Va, watching them fuckin' PANIC as you stay in their grill and they cannot hit you.

Putting people on tilt with snipers is a good skill to have. More pressure on the sniper is less on the folks on the point or cart.

the snipers are fair in the bizarre world of Overwatch where forcing counter-picks is THE GAME

im sure its incredibly passe to accuse people of botting but I really feel I see questionable stuff from widows WAY more regularly than I ever did in CS/TF2/Tribes

but maybe it's just because the head boxes are so huge or the playback isn't accurate, idk

As a generic comment re Mercy's playstyle: the difference between a bad Mercy and a good Mercy is pronounced and if you can't recognize the difference then you are absolutely part of the problem.

Arguably the people who claim she's a "no skill" pick are the ones who are shithouse with her in the first place, they just don't know they are because they have no fucking idea how to play her.

I'm not as bothered by any particular element of Hanzo / Genji, but the totality of DPS tools, flankers who can't flank, too many snipers on Attack, Japanese exoticism, etc, is just too much.

The problem is that I really, really like their mobility. I would love to see a Tank or Support who can double jump or parkour up a wall. It's one of the reasons I end up picking Lucio even if there's a DPS slot open.

I think a minor problem lately too is an imbalance in counter class clusters. Example, running into a team with a widow, hanzo, genji, symm , but you can only switch in one Winston against it.

Couldn't both D.Va and Genji take care of the snipers? I don't really play either, so I'm just guessing.
