[Metal Gear Solid] Konami remembers it used to make games
Posts
Remember how AI was used to extract John Lennon's vocal from the piano and background hiss in last year's released version of The Beatles' "Now and Then"? It was naturally controversial, but the end result worked after nothing else that was tried over the decades did. I wonder if something similar could be done to filter out the background elements that made the original MGS1 VA unsuitable for use in Twin Snakes.
I wouldn't want to hear it necessarily replace the Twin Snakes VA itself; the redone VA is part of that game as much as the redone visuals, for better and worse. But it would be nice to hear as an option in either that or MGS1. Mind you, given the issues the MGS1 emulation in Vol 1 had, and the things Konami could have polished up in it but actively chose not to (some of which modders had a go at of course), it's obviously never going to happen.

Background: at one point we timed how long Ocelot twirls his gun for when introducing himself in Twin Snakes, and he since gained that nickname from us. It literally takes him 14 seconds to get from "Revolver" to "Ocelot".
Man, Twin Snakes is so OTT. Gotta love it.

I don't even know if it's possible to untangle the legal mess between Nintendo, Konami, and whoever picked up the remains of Silicon Knights.
If nothing else there are Nintendo branded things in there, so those would probably have to go. But who (if anyone) has the source code and assets now?
They hoard that shit. Collection of Mana is exclusive to the Switch IIRC because Nintendo had the source code after SquareEnix lost it.
The graphics are better. I mean, technically. But I guess the artists at Silicon Knights just weren't as talented as Kojima's team, since the game looks worse than MGS2, which came out earlier on weaker hardware.
It's nice that playing the game feels less restrictive with the improved controls/abilities. But the game was also never rebalanced for those improvements, so using them too much renders the difficulty trivial. I guess you could try cranking up the difficulty to compensate, but it still feels like an oversight.
The cutscene changes feel a lot more dated with their aping of The Matrix. But they're kind of unintentionally funny now. Kind of like the opening scene in Symphony of the Night. I do like the fan theory that the original cutscenes are how it really happened, and the updated cutscenes are from the VR scenario that Raiden trains on.
And then there's the voices. The audio quality is much better. That is undeniable. Though some of the acting feels a little more phoned in compared to the original. I always thought that Mei Ling's voice was a bit racist, with her having a thick Chinese accent despite being born in America. Like her voice was based on how she looked rather than where she was from.
Looks good!
